Champion 9430 No excuses! | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread Hang in there Karen, I guess I would be in the camp of adding in more miles on the bike and cautiously on the run. Only you know your body and your limits so I would work carefully around them. But yeah, I think getting out there and gutting out a few 100 milers would be very beneficial if even only for the mental aspect of it and learning again that beautiful struggle that is being at 90 miles and not wanting to peddle another stroke but also knowing you have 22 miles to go Best of luck to you! |

Champion 9430 No excuses! | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread Okay peeps, 9 weeks left. I guess for me that looks like 7 hard weeks and then a couple weeks of backing it down, getting my business in order so I can sneak away for a week, and then let the party begin. Finally had a solid week last week after a couple of doozers in a row. Did miss a swim but I guess I can live with that. Might even try the unthinkable today. A buddy just called and asked if I wanted to swim outside today. It is March 19, the earliest I have ever swam outside was May 15. Usually we have ice on the lakes yet but this crazy winter and last week of record highs might make it tolerable. Crap we swam in lake michigan last June and it was 47 degrees so a local not very deep lake can't be that cold, right? |

I've been so tempted to sign up - about 40 people from my training group are doing it. It would be fun to do something with all of them, but I am the only one doing IM Texas. They are all doing a Fall IM, or 2013. If I don't sign up at the last minute, I might still go down to watch Lance Armstrong. If I had the money I would be all over it. I would love to test my nutrition/fitness to see where I am. |

I did it last year as a tune up race, work on nutrition, pacing, etc ... its worth it if you can swing it ... by April 1, its just a short training day anyway, right? |

We've been getting good training on the 2011 course, but I'll be damned if that does any good if they change up the whole course the week before the race!
It's about to get a little hillier.. |

It's about to get a little hillier.. Are we talking hillier or more inclines? Do I need to get my front derailleur fixed or will I be fine with my big ring? |

Having seen the area, I can't image it would get downright hilly. Maybe just a few more inclines. But HILLY? REALLY HILLY? I can't see that happening. ??? |

Expert 2547 The Woodlands, TX | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread Not really hilly, just hillier. Relax. It's still The Woodlands area. They're not importing Alp d'huez or anything. The newer version will be adding some hills. I'm not going to say more for this reason: Until the ink is dry, you don't want to get residents in a stir because you don't want more headaches getting approval. And this is an election year to boot. When the ink is dry then the road details go up. Should be really soon. There is 1 section that I've got no clue about. if they adjust the north side a little and take you a few miles closer to Anderson, then there is one big nasty hill you'll have to deal with. If you've ever ridden out there you know it. |

I meant that its been almost two years since I've been on that section of road and I dont remember much about the hill, i.e. size/grade, not whether or not I'd call it a "hill". |

Its really great to make changes a few weeks before a race - i changed my gear set for a FLAT Texas race to 54/42 instead of 53/39 - quite annoying - is there any information about the steepness of ascent ? is it manageable with 54/42 ? greetings from austria, erwin |

The Woodlands, TX | Subject: RE: Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas 2012 : Official Thread snowball - 2012-03-21 1:02 PM Don't worry, it is still relatively flat. We may consider them hills because we live here and anything with an incline near The Woodlands is considered a hill. Now if I was still living in CA, I'd consider it an ant hill. It's all perspective. I'm just a little nervous because honestly I've only been riding FLAT, so some of those "rollers" might as well be Mountains to ME. It's all perspective. Those from Austin will think it's flat. If you look the route up on mapmyride.com you will get elevation levels.tjfry - 2012-03-21 10:26 AM Its really great to make changes a few weeks before a race - i changed my gear set for a FLAT Texas race to 54/42 instead of 53/39 - quite annoying - is there any information about the steepness of ascent ? is it manageable with 54/42 ?greetings from austria, erwinNot really hilly, just hillier.
