Use a safe word.

Pffft We dont need no stinkin' safe words Pitzee!

Pomegranates!

Armageddon!!

Armageddon would never work... that's a game my wife and I play. It involves... ummm.... nevermind.

Hamsters??

You're doing it wrong. A safe word should be something which NEVER is used during rough play.. Hamsters or armageddon do not qualify.

So pomegranate is out to... that's my pet name for... ugh... again... nevermind. TMI

mr2tony - 2013-05-06 11:01 AM Nice job preach! How was it out there?

So endorphins are a b***h ... first runner's high in God knows how long and between that and the race atmosphere and a good-for-me ten miles, I decided to just keep moving and seeing if I could complete the distance.

My plan had been to run the first ten miles and then split off with the half marathon... that worked until the first five miles were over. I realized I had done those miles in an hour. I kept that pace through mile 10. stupid stupid endorphins.

It was very sunny, with little shade. It was warm (again.. sunny) and windy at times. My stomach was queasy most of the run. Taking in nutrition was always fun. My right calf cramped up three times. I have never seen my muscles do that. The third time it almost dropped me. But I was able to keep moving. The regs of the race said you needed to keep a 14min pace, which I mostly did through mile 20. Overall I averaged 15:15/mile. Not pretty, but this marathon ended up being one done by sheer will. I wanted to quit about ten times. But I just kept moving. I finished out of sheer determination. This was a mental victory so much more than a physical one.

The Pittsburgh marathon is a good race. People were out all day watching and cheering runners on.

And I hurt today, but not really any worse than any other long race I have ever done.

Thanks Tony... but it could have gone really bad for me... a 23-yr old guy died on the half marathon course at mile 12.

Why can I push through this event, but then not get into a groove for regular workouts?

Not an easy course. Wide open and no shade through a lot of it. And some long false flats to climb.

false flats... yes.

I can't tell you how many people said, "It's all downhill from here." They don't understand geography. Until you reach Bloomfield, you cannot say that. Of course the stretch from Bloomfield to downtown is a terrible stretch... so desolate, with nothing pretty to look at...

Racing is fun, lots of people cheering you on and you're having a good time and all that. Training -- you get none of that. You get to run and huff and puff and suffer without any support, and that's not fun.

Apparently they put out messages like the day before they think it will be a ripe opportunity and ask who wants to ride along. So yeah it's kind of last minute. The tour company I follow on Facebook has only posted one opportunity so far this season (and they didn't see any tornadoes that day) - hoping winter is now officially past and there will be an opportunity soon!

I saw a tornado up close and personal once and it was awesome in a super scary yet exhilarating sort of way. I would like to never be IN one but they are amazing from a safe distance. Well, not `safe' really, but not all up in that sucker.
