Surgery is worrying but EVERYONE I know that has had their hip or knees replaced has been so very thankful that they did the surgery and wondered why they lived in such pain for so long.  February is a good time. Get the healing out of the way and then get to play all summer!

And it is better to get it done before there is too much "compensation" damage done to the knees and such.

I'm not a New Year's Resolutionist, but with the toes being banged up I'm probably done for the remainder of the year.

I need a challenge for January. I REALLY want to get back in the workout habit, and lose the weight. Plus I AM going to run the MCM in October. I just need a little help please.

What kind of motivation works for you? I just joined up with a group of folks that have to put money into a fund when they don't do their workouts. The winner-the person or persons who do the most gets the money at the end of the challenge.

I'm not sure what would work for me. I WANT to get fit, and run again, and lose weight. I just can't seem to get back in a routine. 2013 seemed to be a year of stupid injuries, too. I will admit, I don't like losing my money, so something like that may motivate me.

Well, let's devise a payment/debit challenge. We need to have some realistic goals that are attainable, but not to wimpy either.

Good morning Ghoulies!

Remember last week when I told you about the fall Caleb took in the barn? I had been keeping an eye on him for a concussion, and the diagnosis could have gone either way. Last night on his way home from basketball he sent me a text that he got hit in the eye, and he had an ice pack. Ok. I knew he wasn't right when he came home. He wasn't acting like himself, and when we sat down to dinner, I made steak - one of his favorites, I had to cut his meat for him, he couldn't do it. He also had no appetite, which isn't like him at all. He couldn't keep his train of thought on the tracks. He couldn't stand having the lights on in the house.

He is supposed to have 2 tests, and a quiz today, he said he was going to the office to study, so I went back to my bedroom to work on my homework (this is the last week of classes for this semester). He came back after a few minutes and laid down on my bed and said he didn't feel well. He asked if I had to have the lights on, I said no, he got up and turned them off, then got back in my bed. A friend of mine, who has a son on the team sent me a text to ask how Caleb was. She said her son told her he took a nasty hit to the head. I told her I suspected a concussion and was going to have him see the trainer before his basketball game. She said she was at the school, she had just been talking to the trainer and she'd give her a heads up to pull Caleb out of class to see him.

It was about 15 minutes later and the trainer called me. We talked about Caleb, his symptoms, and she agreed it sounded like he has a concussion. They seem to take concussions seriously at the school. The trainer sends out lists to the teachers and administrators naming kids with concussions, and they are exempt from taking quizzes and tests until they have a normal Impact test. If you don't know what Impact testing is here's a link

http://www.impacttest.com/

When they have their sports physicals done they take the test so they have a baseline. It will be at least a week before he is allowed to return to activity, and he has to go through a series of mental and physical tests before he can return.

Anyway, she recommended he stay home from school today, but he said he would go. I am going to call home this morning and try to get him to stay home. He needs to rest his noggin. He can go tomorrow, I know there will be very little LEARNING done tomorrow and it will mostly be parties and watching movies.

Ann, Concussions are pretty darn serious. A trip to the Em clinic may be in order. A former Ghoulie Mentee, Marla Shapiro is heading up a whole clinic in Atlanta specifically for concussion and head impact injuries. It is being started largely because of the permanent damage kids get from school sports. (Not being said to scare you but rather to urge a visit to the clinic).

Morning.  It dipped below freezing last night.  Since it had been raining, it is icy out!  Very slick when I walked out on the deck.  But by the time I head to work it will probably be much better.  I am so thankful to live in a time and place with indoor heat!

I registered Jim and I. The code took 5 dollars off of the total. You may want to register individually to see if you get 5 bucks off each.

The team is Ghoulies (of course).

Good morning Ghoulies!

So I have concluded that the problem with head injuries is not the injury itself, but the old school way of thinking. I told Donnie yesterday that Caleb was staying home from school. He gave me grief, said the boy was ok. After I got off the phone with him he gave the boy grief, he shouldn't have done that. Donnie was going to take Caleb down the road to his mom's,where the kids get on the bus, to have breakfast, then he'd drop him off at the house on his way to work. Instead of having a good hot breakfast Caleb chose to stay home and eat a cold pop-tart because he didn't want to have to deal with his grandparents. That's just sad. I was home by 9:30, so he didn't have to spend the day alone. He wasn't right. He had no business being in school yesterday. The old school way of thinking that - it's just your head, walk it off you'll be fine, is a HUGE part of the problem. He missed a basketball game yesterday. So what? He probably would have gotten to play. So what? What if he took another blow to the head, especially since he's moving slower, and not thinking as fast as normal. Would the few minutes of time he had on the court have been worth worsening a head injury? Not in my opinion. Until we change the way of thinking of the uninjured we will still have problems with the injured.

So what does everyone have planned for Christmas?

I'm done shopping, but still haven't wrapped anything. I need to finish my final project for my one class first, then I'll start.

On Christmas Eve afternoon my parents, sister and her family, and my brother and his family, and an aunt of mine are coming to my house. We'll open presents, have lunch, and hang out for a bit. Honestly this is the stressful part of my Christmas. I'd rather just hang out with my sister, my brother and mother bring too much drama. Oy vey!

On Christmas day we'll open presents at the house, then later in the morning go down the road to Donnie's parent's for lunch with the family. After that Donnie and Keri will probably stay and talk, I'll go home and nap, Caleb will probably come along with me but he'll go play new games on the Xbox.

Keri wants to do some baking, because she loves to bake. Caleb would like to do some baking, because he has Family & Consumer Science this semester and he has made a few cookies in class that he really likes so he'd like to make them for Christmas. Not sure when we're going to get the baking done, maybe Monday afternoon.

Good morning Ghoulies!

I'm glad Caleb had the sense to listen to you and his body and stay home.  I hope he is doing better today.  My neighbors son had three concussions in a 12 month period of time.  The third one this past spring, he ended up being kept at home for over a month.  No TV, no reading, no playing games.  Try and keep a 10 year old quiet.  He was told he could sleep or sit quietly.  Once he was released they put him right back into baseball and now basketball.  I just hope he doesn't get any more. I hope Caleb heals quickly and can avoid future concussions.

That is exactly why the Hospital in Atlanta started their concussion unit. Mostly to help train school teams on how to do sports safely and to realize that concussions are majorly serious. Permanent, serious damage can be done from repeated concussions or head trauma. The old school thinking is WRONG!!!

Morning Ghoulies~ I am off for PT again. I need to leave in about 10 minutes. Sigh, It makes so much sense to schedule early appointments when I make them. I hardly slept at all last night but was a sleep like a rock from 5 until the alarm went off.

Christmas,, well. we have been sort of having it for a few days. Monday we had Dock night Christmas gathering. The night before Jim and I put together the baskets of canned goodies for everyone. Wednesday we did the same for all the folks at the local Inn that we see most Thursdays. and last night we went and gave them all to folks. I still have a few to give out, but at least they are all assembled, labeled and suitably wrapped and decorated. I got most of my present wrapping done. I just have Jim's family to deal with (I mean wrap).

After PT I am going to our local food shelter to assemble the food baskets and toys for local folks in need. Turns out there is more than anyone guessed.

Tonight is "wineterfest" in Lake Lure/Chimney Rock.. I have no idea how it will go. It is something the Chamber thew together a week ago. Caroling, cider, hot chocolate, hay rides etc. We will go and participate..... this time.

Tomorrow we pick the son up from the airport. He is back from Panama for the holidays. We will grab him then go to the Clarke's farm for carolling. They have been doing this for about 50-60 years and it is more fun than I can explain.

Sunday, we are going to Grenville, SC (about an hour from here) to hang out with the son's girlfriends family.

After that, I am not sure. Jim's brother will show up, usually Christmas eve or so. Jim's daughter will be here sometime, we are not sure when or how long. Presents will be opened as people are here.

After that..... the only thing I have planned is the New Years Day polar plunge.. oh, and folks coming here to spend the night to do said plunge on NY eve.

Okay, now I have to run. Have lovely days all... tomorrow is the Solstice!!! the days will start to get longer from then on!!!!

Sunday we are planning on seeing the movie "The Hobbit" (the second one)

Monday after work we will drive up to NC

Tuesday is my Dad's 86th birthday

Wednesday drive back home

Thursday work

Friday after work son and his GF are coming over.  We will pretend it is Christmas eve.

Saturday will be Christmas with Son and GF.

No New Years plans as of yet.  We have held a party the last couple of years.  Wish someone else would step up to the plate.  More than likely, unless we have a party, it is going to be a quiet New Years Eve and we will be asleep before midnight, LOL.

Wish my sister's house was closer to Robin's, then I would stop there every time I go to NC.

My expectations for the quality of this years’ Triathlon world championship were fulfilled. This was because of the superb location that is like no other along with having the top triathletes present.

Don’t forget this is an incredibly big year for sport with the Olympics back in Athens where the modern Olympics started, and especially triathlon to make its second appearance.
