Stopped in at SBux this morning to drown my sorrows (and jump start my decline in to overweight depression) in a dirty eggnog chai. Positive note: I introduced the drink to the barista and the lady in line behind me. Headed to Ft. Collins this weekend to see one of our hockey boys play. Downside: I was going to check out my marathon route while there. Can still walk with a slight limp. Interstingly, I wore boots today to hide my compression socks and the boot seems to make it easier to walk... |

Master 3870 | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors v.2 thr.3 CLOSED (Poptart/pet pic bribes considered) Happy Wednesday, Pod. Thanks for all the race discussion yesterday. It's just what I needed! In limbo, yet again. Toe was just healing up so I could get back to my regular routine... and then I slid/bounced off the trail on our ride Saturday morning. Left hand is the worst right now, though yesterday had some major improvement. I wanted to do a year-end HM, but that's not going to happen. So I'm starting over for next year and going in two month increments. Another piece of limbo is, now that IMAZ is over, J is back on the job prowl. For now I'm looking at: Jan 10 12 Hours in the Papago, Jan 24 Coldwater Rumble 20k trail run, Feb 7 Casa Grande HM (and if we wanted to be really romantic, J and I could do a 50k trail relay on Feb 14 ) This was my hand two days ago...and, no, it doesn't usually look like that

It has been an interesting one, without a doubt. I should hit 1000 miles on the bike and could hit 575 running. This is a little less than last year, but after the ankle mess I had early in the year, I am quite happy with these numbers. More than that, this year has been another year that I am grateful to have a group of friends that continue to encourage and support each others athletic goals and accomplishments. But not only the athletic side, but even more so, the encouragement to be a better person. You all have been a blessing and for that I want to say "Thank You" from the bottom of my heart! Looking back at my numbers I am surprised to see even with my lock down/s I have run more miles than last year. Although, I guess that makes sense since my shoulder shut me out of biking and swimming the first part of July, so I had more time to run. I am looking forward to figuring out what my race schedule will be next year. I'm already planning on more trail races and there is a little voice in my head trying to talk me into doing another marathon. I'm ignoring now!! We should all post our tentative race schedules (including long shot stuff we are only kind of considering) and talk about it together. I think it would be cool to see what everyone is thinking about. Oooh, this is a good opportunity to run something by you all (y'all). A friend asked if I'd be interested in doing a HM in Moab in March. My niece is doing the same race. My training schedule that weekend is a 15k race simulation and a 17 mile easy run. The travel timing may not be great, with DS2's graduation from basic in the same timeframe. I really want to do right by my marathon training but not sure I can find the right distances for the race sims. Thoughts? As for the rest of the season... no idea. My sole focus is my Marathon in May. You mean 15K race on a sat and then an easy 17-miler on Sunday? If so, that would totally work. I'd do the HM in Lieu of the 15K simulation and shoot for 15-17 the next day. Do you have experience with big days in a row btw? Which day is the Moab race? And is that 15k sim at Marathon pace? w/u & c/d on each end of it too? Yeah, yeah, good questions...I would assume by the term "simulation" unless of course you are just simulating racing, as in the act of an all out effort for a given race distance in race attire. I am curious what plan this is. If it really is two days, one being race sim and the next being long run it seems pretty advanced. It's solid training but double days like that took me two marathon cycles to be able to do. It's hard. Right now I'm not accostomed to big days back to back like that. I start the new plan later this month. I guess he calls them "tune up" races. There are three of them 2, 4 and six weeks before the goal race. The plan is Pfitzinger's Advanced Marathoning. From what I understand, you can do a tune up race one of three ways
Yes. This is true. In the Pfitz plan, he intends the tune-ups to get you race experience and get a view of your fitness, which means they are meant to be raced and not run at M pace. The M pacing generally falls in large chunks during a long run and those are throughout the plan.
Are we all looking at the same thing? I see here for no better reason than that's what Google came up with. And it says 8-15k or 8-10k at 2, 4 and 6 weeks out, not an outright 15k. From a quick look over this link it sounds like the intention is closer to threshold than m-pace, so it's going to be hard. I would lean towards the shorter end as even that is still likely to be somewhat near or even over 40 minutes. The variation in distance would seem to be allowing for different running abilities. Truly fast people will cover the longer distance in 45-50 minutes near threshold pace. Also, still hadn't seen clarification on which day the Moab HM is on. It's possible to it on either, but would have notably different strategies depending on the day, and what comes of the target effort. What I am speaking to is specifically a tune-up race. As I understand it, Pfitz's tune-up (and really, any tune-up I would recommend) is about getting you race ready (dealing with nerves, pacing, attire, fuel, etc etc) and checking in on where your fitness is (vdot in the case of daniels.) If you run a 10K (or 15, or HM etc) at M pace, it's not really going to tell you anything about your fitness other than your ability to hold M pace for X amount of miles. Which you don't really need a race to tell you.... As for the schedule you referenced, yeah, it appears that 15K is a LT run, not a race. But I don't have my book in front of me either so I am not sure. |
