Mike- how is the water temp in May at Lory? I'm signed up for this year. I did it two years ago in Aug when it got postponed due to the fires (and my husband who was signed up broke his wrist two weeks ahead so I took his entry). I hate cold water so was totally on the fence about signing up.

I think the decision to get a coach is an awesome one. While this group is great about providing a layer of accountability, a one-on-one relationship with a coach makes it hard to skip a workout. I don't know about you - but that desire to please really makes me put more effort into my workouts and the coaching I've had has been long distance. I can only imagine what it would be like if my coach were screaming at my from the pool deck.

Plus, a coach could help you avoid injuries as you head towards your HIM in the next couple of months. That, Nancy Boy, makes the expense worth it.

what he said ^^^^^

I'm a slacker (sorta) and didn't get my 200min done. Sick kids all week (getting better now thank God!!!), wife on-call for the weekend and a snowstorm.
I had 55min to do, with 1:05 planned on the trainer. Trainer ride didn't happen. Wife was called in to deliver MY COUSINS BABY!! So that was cool, but she was there all night during the snow. She needed some sleep the next day. Then shoveling, helping my brother-in-law get his semi unstuck (parking lot, no biggie) and family stuff. Just didn't get it done.

CLP for me.

So, are we doing this Feb weight loss thing or what?

I was 238 yesterday. Feb goal = 233 with a stretch goal of 230!

Some BDAS Business:

- The vote on the bike jersey/t shirt is in - The bike jersey wins 6 votes to 3 with 4 people happy with either. Thanks for voting.

Now - the next step is to design a BDAS logo. Below are two options that we played with last July. the first is by Alan Dempsey (a former BDAS member) and the second, I drew up (with the help of my wife). I'm not set on either and I'd love to have people upload designs this week that you would like the group to consider.

So - our goal for the week is to come up with a few designs and then we can vote on them over the week end. Does that sound like a plan?

BDAS Business Part 2: Goals for week and month

To get the week off to a good start - why don't we shoot for 6 workouts - 5 can be swim/bike/run or other (like shovelling) and the sixth needs to be time spent preventing future injuries - icing, yoga, PT, etc.

There seemed to be a consensus on having a weight loss goal for the month. It might be cool to see how many pounds we can lose as a group this month. We could each set a goal of how much we want to lose and see if we can work together to reach our individual and group goal. Perhaps in the future, we could challenge another BT group - what do you think of that?

For the monthly goal - I created a Google Doc which we can use to enter our monthly goals on. If you are one of those people who can make a good spreadsheet with a place for us to check in weekly - by all means have at it!

Checking in for the month

I like the Feb Weight loss challenge

Right now I am at 225 and want to get into the high 2 teens, 218 should be doable

The 200 minute challenge seems like a good goal

My weekly totals are 120 minutes on spin
90 minute swim class
2 30 minute swim practice sessions

I pick up a new Road bike on Tuesday, have an hour appointment to get it fitted.

Have a trainer at home that is waiting, so I will incorporate some training time each week to that

Have now really been running much so far this year, went 5 minutes on the treadmill last week before my spin class

Much needed and appreciated rest day yesterday--no snow to shovel down here, so I just did some household chores and relaxed until the game. No comment on that debacle.

36/400 this morning with a 2000yd swim. I'm following Shelia T's Swim Speed Workouts, which consist of a lot of short sets (50, 75, 100s), so I wanted to see if I'm still capable of doing some longer distance stuff. Did a ladder up to 400 and then back down and it felt good. Nice to know I won't completely die in the pool.

January 2014 Totals
Swim: 5h 26m 49s - 11800 Yd
Bike: 8h 45m 38s - 151.15 Mi
Run: 5h 14m 47s - 20.64 Mi
Racquetball: 1h 00m
Walking: 1h 31m

Pretty happy with all of those numbers except the run. Run is my weakest leg, so I really need to work on that. I need to get on a plan for run training.

Kurt - sounds like you had more than enough shoveling in there to cover the difference no?

Dave - LOVE That second logo! Swim-Bike-Run-Beer. Perfect! BDAS - where shoveling is a workout and 12oz curls are the reward!

I'm in for 6 workouts this week. Of course, I got the official word my swim class was cancelled again. That makes 3 weeks in a row. Have to make up for that...also means the Y is closed. Again. Oy...

Hi,

I'd like to join the group.

NAME: Dan

STORY: Story, Single dad, three great kids 10, 8, and 2 and got into triathlons to keep myself busy and to loose 30lbs in 2013. Ive gained about 10 back and looking to get back into tris this year to drop the weight again.

FAMILY STATUS: Three great kids, and a single dad. Fortunately, my ex and I get along well enough so I can train and go to 2-3 races a year.

CURRENT TRAINING: Just stepped up from a winter maintence plan of beer curls to get ready for a Wildflower in May.

2014 RACES:: Folsom Long Course 70.3 in June, Vineman Full in July (bonked on the run and DNF), and Austin Ironman 70.3 in October.

RACES PLANNED FOR 15: Wildflower in May, and Ironman Santa Cruz in September.

BEER PREFERENCE: I will drink just about anything but I love my Guiness. Corona on a hot day in the back yard. I know it is sad.

WEIGHT LOSS: I stopped exercising from 2006 to 2013. I got into triathlons to loose the weight. I went up to 205, and it scared me when I realized I was becoming my dad who is about 260. Now I am 190 and want to get back to 175 which I had at the end of October 2014.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD PARTICIPANT: I have done sprints, Olys and half Ironmans. I learned much from my failed attempt at the 140.6 and know how to set my goals appropriately now.

Both of these are great goals. I made my goal 5 lbs by the end of the month, but I'm hoping to make it more like 8 (I already gained back a few lbs I lost in Vegas). Also, my New Years Resolution was to plank every day for a minimum of 60 seconds, and then I decided I want to try to up that by 30 seconds every month (my friends and I did a 30 day plank challenge where the final goal was 5 minutes...only one of us made it that far, haha). I plan on getting back into that now since I slacked on it.

Greetings! I'd like to john this mentor group! Mainly for the beer advice, but the tri advice can't hurt!! ;0)

NAME: Jeremy

STORY: I'm fairly new to triathlon, this is my second attempt to enter the sport after learning lots of lessons about over training and failing to treat injuries properly during my first foray. I love the challenge of triathlon and the science. I'm also an introvert, but I'm a pastor for a living, so I really love the alone time that training gives me. Nobody wants to hang out and blister a 9 or 10 mile run, and if they do they can't talk much!!! I'm 35 and I feel like it's the time to start crushing some fitness goals.

FAMILY STATUS: I'm married with 3 kids (4,5 and 7) so most of my training happens in the dark

CURRENT TRAINING: Finishing a run specific build to PR a half marathon. Run and bike have always come very naturally. Adding the swim will be the challenge for me.

2014 RACES:: I eased my way back into disciplined training last fall with the Spinx Half Marathon in Greenville, SC and ran a 2:03:35 (after coming out WAY too fast and bonking on a pretty hilly course).

RACES PLANNED FOR 15: GHS Half Marathon (Feb. 28, 2015), Greenwood Triathlon 2015 (Oly) (June 13, 2015), IM70.3 Augusta (Sept 27, 2015)

BEER PREFERENCE: I'm a sucker for an imperial IPA, current favorite is Dogfish Head Burton Baton

WEIGHT LOSS: Not really a goal for me, always had a high metabolism. Beer helps me not lose weight while training, please don't hate me

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD PARTICIPANT: I've always replaced spending money with working hard and learning new things. Triathlon is no different. Trying to learn all I can and then train hard.

I have to get used to the fact that the trainer reported speed is much slower than what I ride outside. I broke my back and it's under 15mph. Outside is much faster. I need to understand this is training by power not speed. By the way did I say the kickr is freaking awesome. One gear and it does all the thinking for me. You can't get by with going easy on an interval since the resistance isn't based on speed but rather your FTP (functional threshold power) and it adjusts automatically. No excuses not to get a good workout in.

Dan and Jeremy, welcome!! It's an awesome group here - supportive, knowledgeable, and will hold you accountable!! oh, plus there is a lot of beer talk.

Yesterday was my first fever-free day (since last Tuesday night)! Yea! However, I have lost 5 pounds (for me not good) which brings me to 119 on a 5'8" frame so I have zero energy. does that count for the weight loss challenge? Desire for food still hasn't come back but I'm sure it will with a vengeance at some point; then the muscle building begins.

I would love to do a plank challenge - or any challenge really. it will take a day or two for me to get into it (starting slow as I recover) but I am so happy to be getting over this. I'll look back to see what the plan is for February - I think I saw something about 7 workouts in a week? I'll check.

Live with meaning!!

- thanks for the link to triathlon with a busy schedule, I travel 2 to 4 days almost every week from now till May, so very useful!
- my vote goes for BIKE shirt, but will be happy with whatever as a group agree
- today I had my HM, first race of the year. Have been fighting with a flu for almost 2 weeks now (this year the viruses are much harder to get rid of them, risk of pneumonia is higher even in younger people if fever is maintained), so still not recovered, but decided to give it a try. I was running with two very good friends, in case I felt too bad and had to quit. But I am quite stubborn, and the trail was beautiful, all out of the city and not too tough. I did suffer the first 3k, but then started to feel better and better and finished in 1.55. Also discovered how good it is to try coke at the water stations, never tried before but read hear about it, and was fantastic. A gel at km 16 also was very helpful.

Hope you all have a great week!

This beer is so elusive that you need to be on multiple twitter feeds of the delivery drivers in the towns surrounding the brewery in Vermont, just to get a hold of a few cans. So much so that locals have made a living buying it and selling it on ebay at a profit. And yet it seems everyone I know has tried it. I've never even seen an empty can :D

On the vote - 1st bike jersey

Still trying desperately to get out of the house to the gym tonight. I've lost hours of work the past couple days just clearing the house, mailbox, and fire hydrant out and I'm trying to make up for it (yeah I know, get back to work instead of posting here!). Seriously the piles of snow the plows put on top of the hydrant are taller than me.

John - I'm just catching up on the post I've missed over the last couple of days. But get this... Here is why my wife is the greatest wife on the planet. Here is a conversation I had with Heidi two weeks ago about Heady Topper...

DQ - Crap, I'm down to my last can. (of heady topper)
HQ - You should drive up to VT over the break and stake out some grocery stores
DQ - I'd love to but I don't know if I could find any if I went up for the day.
HQ - Stay up there until you find some. It's your vacation. You should do what makes you happy.
DQ - Really?
HQ - Really! Heady topper makes you happy
DQ - I love you honey
HQ - I know.
