I have no food at work other than a jar of peanut butter... what are the odds that I have no spoon hiding in one of these drawers and I'll have to either use my fingers or try to inconspicuously lick the PB right out of the jar?

Ha!  That is why I love working in a vet clinic--tongue depressors make great spoons!  You could always improvise.  Take 2 pencils and tape them together about an inch apart, using tape to an inch deep.  Voila!  Instant spoon.

 Cool

Be interesting to see what they came up with. So far it sounds like they may have stayed out of the hardest things.

The home page lists the swim as a loop, but on the course page it's listed as point to point?  Hopefully it's the latter so you don't have to swim against the current!!  Bike with 2100ft of climbing and a run with 700ft of elevation... it'll be interesting to see how quickly this one sells out.

That's nothing - the Fast and Flat crowd will be helping this sell out very soon!

That begs the question to the Manatee's.  Are y'all in that "Fast and Flat" crowd, or in the "The tougher the better" crowd.

Me personally - I want tough!  I plan to do that race back east (can't remember the name) where you get your name in brick if you make that climb.  You know - the one where everyone is falling over!

If its a 2 loop course, wouldn't the total bike elevation be 4200 ft? Is that a stupid question ( flat lander here)?I'm in the "fast" and flat crowd, mainly because that's what the terrain in most of Florida is. While I know there is no comparison in degree do difficulty b/w a flat course and a hilly one, you do have to prepared for the nonstop hard pedaling of a flat race - no coasting down hills, for those of you who coast. There is an area near me where I can get "hills", but when training for a flat HIM course, I don't ride those routes often.

I like variety. It's not so much the tougher the better or the fast and flat. FOr instance, I like the idea of running the Chicago Marathon as obviously it will produce really smokin' fast times but I prefer more variety on the course for both my legs and my mind.

It'll be interesting to see what people get as they actually ride it. The volume of hills isn't much per what's been listed, but the roller potential is still enough to really sting you if not careful.

And as for what type of race, the occasional flat short course is fun to really hammer and just fly, but otherwise I want some adventure.

ETA: And Savageman is the race with the brick. Better do it soon ('14 or '15) as they are running out of room for bricks.

Savageman - that's it!  Will put it on the list for 2015.  Next year is all about KQ for me.

Is it cheating if you change out your cassette, or do most people change it out for that climb?  I have an 11 - 23 right now, but I think that climb would be pretty tough on a 23.  I think I could go to a 25 or 27 right for my lowest rear gear right?

It's the Westernport Wall.

Hell, you can go 11-36 if your rear derailleur is long enough. (I wouldn't recommend it, but you could).

Are you already running a compact crank? (Is your bike in the Manatee Porn Gallery? Why can't I find it?)

No - I have a standard crank (39, 53) and an 11 - 23 casette. (11 - 17 + 19, 21, 23).

Couple questions:

  1. What is the largest front crank I can go to?
  2. Smallest rear?  (I really want a bigger front crank for those screaming descents, but don't want to screw up my paces on the flats.  At the same time - I feel I will develop into a faster rider on the flats if I start working with a larger chain ring on the front).
  3. What would you recommend for routes with a lot tougher climbing? Here's a link to one of my routes around here. 56 miles  This is a pretty common amount of climbing for me - no matter what loop I do around here.  I handle these hills fine with my current setup (I didn't used to be able to say that).  This climb - almost killed me.  It is short - but there are segments between 10% and 15%.  It hurt - and my cadence dropped into the low 60's for this Beast.

I'm sure it's in there - but just for good measure...

They put it at 2100' for the entire course, not per loop. That's on MapMyRide though, which seems to underestimate compared to other methods. I have a feeling that someone from Florida would still want to look at it as hilly though. Especially if their area of Florida fits the stereotype regarding terrain and that's all they really know. There is flat and then there is pancake flat. I didn't see substantial climbs in there, but the area is still likely to have a lot of small ups and downs. Kind of a death by 100 puppies. None of the bites really hurt on their own, but there are just so many of them.
