Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tri-Wog StL - 2009-04-10 2:19 PM I don't know about that one but I am headed to Coach Troy's camp.....
http://www.coachtroy.com/products/item68.cfm It's cheaper than $595.00 and I personally like Troy's approach to Ironman racing......just me but the value is strong in this camp....
Paul I'm doing the Playtri camp. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yup, just goes to confirm what I posted earlier.....I had gotten word from Mike that he was going to be in Louisville so I guess if WTC is releasing the data then I can reiterate it here.... 4th Street Live is going to be REALLY rockin' with Mike on the mic.!! For those who haven't in the past, hanging out after finishing (post shower, etc.) is a really inspiring exercise and helps support your fellow athletes and Mike Reilly loves playing up the fact that other finisher are on hand to help cheer.....let's all be there 'til the end!!! I'll be there after a quick shower and a brief stop at "The Pub" for some "take out".....

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So for you experienced Louisville racers....What cassette did you ride the course with. I know this somewhat depends on the rider but....My road bike that i ride has a 12-26 and i've been able to get up 20% inclines with that. I recently purchased a FUJI D6 professional tri bike and it comes with an 11-23....I was wondering if you guys think a 23 is enough with the hills on the bike course? Also, i might be able to get up the hills with a 23, but would it be better to get a larger gear to keep from wasting to much energy pumping up the hill in the 23? |

Better to have it and not use it than to not have it and need it! Two things that you (might) lose with a 26 or 27....grainularity (the deltas between adjacent gears is greater) and you might find you can't find the "sweet spot" because there is no gear say, in between 16 and 18 or whatever. When I changed from a 12/23 to a 12/27 I found myself searching for a sweet spot on the flats. One click up was too hard and one click down was too easy. But in Louisivlle, there are a whole lot of flats! You are going to constantly shifting up and down. Make sure you have your bike tuned before the race. Personally, I would go with a 27 cog gear! There are a few hills that all you can do is sit and spin. Could you spin them with a 23? Probably....but in my mind, the purpose sitting and spinning is evergy conservation. If I had plenty of energy, I'd stand and power to the top. Save the 11/23 for when you do FL. ;-)

You are right about this Gary. As I was going down that hill at about 45 mph I heard an ambulance. Near the bottom there was a girl off in the ditch. I'm not sure what happened but it gave me pauses. Her day was over. He dream crushed. And maybe a bone or or two crushed. That is the ONLY hill that I came anywhere close to that speed. The thing that is dangerous IMO is people passing. The road is not that wide and if someone is passing someone going down at the same time someone is passing someone coming back up...at the same time I'm passing both riders on the downhill. Well anyway, I think I'll take it a little easier on that downhill this year. In the grand scheme of things, the risk does not justify the reward of a few seconds by going 45 mph for a couple of minutes.

~Mike Plus with us clydes it's pretty easy to get up to a high speed on those out and back's.. I really think the other riders either didnt' think someone would be passing them when they were going 40 and at that speed with helmets on and the wind no one could hear anyone yelling "On your Left" |

Eggzactly! I passed a whole lots of peoples on the downhill - of course they would overtake me right back on the next climb.

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() During the race, there was an ambulance parked on the downhill as I was going down. I nearly flew into the back of it. I can't even imagine how much that would have sucked. Good luck to all you folks training for it this year. I got hitched 3 weeks after the race last year and told my wife I would sit this year out. I'm gonna give it another shot next year though. Other than the area being narrow, you also have to watch out for IronMex team....those guys bunched up all over the course! At one point 2 of them were chtting with eachother, riding side-by-side and I yelled "coming through" and sailed between them, like a perfectly kicked field-goal. Not the brightest decision on my part. |
