Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread jjcnbg - 2009-09-23 6:39 AM Ok, the Tri-Gods must be pissed at me or something. Right when I am reaching the height of my training and need to fine tune my pacing they unleash an unprecedented flood on the Atlanta area. Atlanta is extremely hilly (especially on the northside where I live) and it is very difficult to find flat courses to train on. I had found the perfect park for run training and the perfect 60+ mile long bike path for training. My running park is now 7ft under water. Most of the bike path has been closed due to mudslides, washout, debris, etc... So it looks like instead of pacing I will be working on a lot of hill training for now. I know things don't always go perfectly and you need to adapt and overcome but COME ON. Everything has been great for the past 12 months and 6 WEEKS before the race and they pull this Happy Wednesday and good luck training. Hang in there. I have been told to have an "A" plan, and then a "B" plan when things go wrong, then a "C" plan when that goes wrong .... all the way to "DD" plan. Well, maybe this is your training for being able to change plans and adapt well |

Do you know approximately how many calories per cup each serving will be?At IMKY, on the bike they had both yellow and orange bottles. I think the calorie count is close to 150 per bottle. On the run, there was yellow. Cups probably carry 50 calories. From looking at the athlete guide, I'd guess that IMFL will have the same. |

If so what else do you consume to get your calories. I have been going back and forth with nutrition on the bike. Running my calories are staying down but the bike has been a little tougher. I initially tried gatorade and gels but found that the two don't mix well. So I switched to just gels which is great for 60-80 miles but then causes GI distress (plus that is what I use on the run and would rather not do the same thing for 12 hours straight. I started playing around with super-concentrated gatorade and water to get the right amount of calories but that isn't sitting well either. Long story short, how many calories are you taking in per hour and what are you using? |

Taste is good accept I made it a little light in flavor, and I'm consuming 280 cals plus and hour. The plus is some times I just need some other flavor i.e. gel or shot bloc (little rewards). |

Expert 830 Chesapeake, VA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I talk Gel, gatorade, water and Chex Mix. The chex mix works great for me for some reason. I will probably eat a total of two cups worth on the bike, 4-5 gels and i mix my gatorade with water and will have about 6 bottles of that. Once in a while i will through in a bar cliff or power but usually do not need it. It gets me through pretty well. And I alternate it Gel and Chex mix every 30 minutes by doing that it prevents the GI issues I used to get by doing all gels. |

Veteran 258 Long Island | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I should have been more specific with my question as I was referring to Gatorade Endurance on the run. I want to incorporate this into my run plan to get used to the flavor / taste. I normally wear a fuel belt on the run, but will live off the course for the race and that is why I was asking the question in regards to flavor & calories. JJ – I would suggest using Infinit for the bike as I use two bottles on my long rides and each contains 900 calories. I love this stuff! Edited by eburg 2009-09-23 1:08 PM |

I use Carbo Pro plus salt for all my bike calories, on the run i alternate gatorade and water, the last ten miles i hit the coke hard. I try to keep it simple. I aim for 400 cals an hour on the bike, 300 on the run |

Master 1655 NJ | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I use G2 and gels on the bike - some cliff bar every 20 mins or so and an uncrustable after about 2 - 2.5 hrs. So far so good....also have had bananas which work well and little candy bars for a treat. |

Extreme Veteran 572 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Thanks for all the reply's guys. I have tried so many different combinations that I just need some fresh perspective. Every time I switch it up it's starts out well and then I start have stomach issues after a couple weeks. I know you are supposed to load up on calories during the bike but I have a hard time going over 200 calories per hour. I had 300 going for awhile and then that plan started making me nauseous. I am also trying very hard to get just enough fluids without having to get off the bike every 20 miles to pee. Gatorade seems to keep me on the bike whereas water has me making lots of stops. Hopefully I will get this all fine tuned before race day. |

When I tried making super concentrated gatorade I had 600 a bottle and it was starting to get pretty thick. Isn't Infinite the stuff you have to order online? Never thought to used it on rides as I wasnt' sure how well that would work out of a bento box. I have been using pretzels though which works fairly well at calming the stomach. |

Veteran 273 Virginia Beach | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread On the bike ... Gatorade is too sugary/sticky for me right out of the bottle/mix so I cut mine. I do half a water bottle of gatorade (fruit punch YUM!) and half water and then supplement with Carbo Pro. It ends up being a little over 300 calories an hour and is easy on the stomach. I've been doing this all through training and also eating one gel or a granola bar halfway through my 80+ mile rides. Seems to be working out well. |

Champion 7704 Williamston, Michigan | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I use accelerade, gels and CANDY...I mean really you need SUGAR. I have used laffy taffy, airheads and payday bars (little ones) with good success. It breaks up the monotony of gels. I live in Fl so it has to be something that doesn't melt. Have used those orange slice candies as well but they are a bit messy because they have sugar on them. I'm not a big gatorade fan |

Elite 2998 Fishers, Indiana | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Super Infinit believer here. Started using the stuff last year with a HIM "mix." Changed it this year to an IM mix and it has done super for me. I do change things up with a GU in there every hour as well, but have no problems with Inifint in it's concentrated form (can get about 3hours per bottle in a 24oz bottle). I don't use it for the run, just the bike. For the run I'm a GU2O/water/GU gal. I will probably take a PayDay on the bike just so I have something else out there should I want it. Note of caution to everyone using Shot Blocks, Jelly Beans, Chex Mix, Fig Newtons, etc.--BE SURE BE SURE BE SURE you have them in a zip lock bag that you can keep closed. I know SEVERAL people who, at Redman this past weekend, ended up having globs of nutrition because the rain forged it all together. They either didn't have it in bags, or had the bags open for easy access. That would be a bad way to start the bike should, God forbid, rain occur the day of the race. Just food for thought (haha, I'm punny.) |

Master 1779 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Infinit on the bike. I'll probably take a payday, peanut butter crackers and salty, lime peanuts for special needs. I'll take shot blocks and a gu in the bento box. I'm still working on the run forumla. I've been having GI problems with Infinit on the run portion. My Infinit mix has worked for really well for me up until the last month. Does anyone else have problems with the Infinit bubbling up in the flask on the run? I wondered if the bubbles in the bottle are what is causing the problems. I'm putting 2 scoops in a small fuel belt flask. I take a few sips every .75 of the mile and then drink water at the mile marker. I'm looking at changing my run fuel to EFS Shots. Edited by Catwoman 2009-09-23 7:19 PM |
