Hello half way point for those of us using the 20 week plan.

Good week for me this week.  Most training volume ever.  Did miss one swim but it was around 1500 so I won't sweet it.

Great ride yesterday.  Not a great average but got 7K+ ft of climbing in 81 miles.  Considering KY is just over 4K I think I will be fine.  Had no cramping issues but it was not really that hot.  That is what will kill me if I don't hydrate.

There's been some talk about the practice swims in the days prior to the race.  As we know, Gatorade has been replaced by Powerbar as a race sponsor and it has been Gatorade who has sponsored the practice swims.  The IML race folks have been sketchy about this topic as reported by some over at iamtri.

I was at the iamtri practice swim/bike ride last weekend.  The current was a problem for me.  I was told that the current wouldn't be as strong on race day but I'd like to think that I could get in the water for a practice swim in those days just prior to the race.  I'll likely head back to Louisville late July for additional practice swims.

Just wondering what you folks here plan and what you've heard on this topic.  Also, any advice from those who have experience with the Ohio in late summer either as a past IML participant or someone who has swam the Ohio in general would be greatly appreciated.

As you might guess, I am a weak swimmer.  Don't be alarmed by my experience last weekend.  Everyone else there seemed to do just fine.

I was under the impression that the current would be WITH us if it existed, am I wrong?

The first portion of the swim is against the current.  Look at the swim course map on the IML site and you will be able to better see this.  You swim against current up and around Towhead Island.  This is a channel that is not a huge wide open space.  Not a crowded space either.  We were told that it is about 12 feet deep in the center and gets shallower on the edges.  We were also told to swim on the left of the channel since the current won't be as strong on the left side (not sure why).  You can get a better idea of how long this section is from the course map but I recall the swim "expert" who coached us prior to entering the water to say that the against current distance would be about 800-1000 yards.  Again, don't let my woes worry you.  I am a very poor swimmer.  I won't likely drown but will be one of the last out of the water and am even concerned about chipping at the swim.  My panic should not be any indication of what your swim will be like.  I hear that most do as well or better in Louisville as any of the other IM course swims.

Oh, and you are right, you do get to swim with the current for the remaining distance from Towhead Island to the take out.

I have heard there are locks upstream that can be adjusted.  I would image if that is true they will control the water flow on race day and for practice swims.  Any unofficial practice swims that people are doing now will have to deal with what current is happening at the time.

What's up guys? First-timer here signed up for Louisville.

A little backstory: Last year I weighed 360 pounds and decided to get my life together. Now I'm at 240, have done a few marathons and tri's and can't wait till Aug. 30th.

My question is this:

The official time limit is 17 hours. The race goes from 7 am to midnight (17 hours). But they say the last athlete usually enters the water about 35-40 minutes after 7. Does that mean the last athlete only gets ~16.5 hours, or does he get the 40 minutes too even though it might be 12:40.

I know that for most of the athletes it won't matter, but I'm predicting a 16-16.5 finish and it IS an issue for me. I'd feel a lot more comfortable with the full 17 hours.

Even if you're last in the water, you're going to have to be finished before 12AM. I have heard that alot of people that think they may be close to the 17 hours get in line EARLY (circa 4AM) to be close to the front, and thus have the full 17 hour time limit.

Good luck!

By the same token, do the people that know they won't be anywhere near the limit stay away from the line until they need to be there?

It just seems since there is a 17 hour limit that the ones that would need the full 17 hours would be able to get the full 17 hours.

Maybe I'm just scared

Don't be scared...just know (I don't know what you training looks like) that you have trained and are ready to do the distance...

I will not be in line at 4AM...I'm a great good decent average below average BOP swimmer, but will just start towards the back...

I'm guessing the "fasties" will be in line early so as to avoid the crowds later in the race...

Crap...ok, I just convinced myself to not start towards the back...maybe I'll get in line around 5 AM

What a weekend! 81 mile ride, 3 mile T-run, 14 mile run the next day. Glad its a recovery day today hope to do some yoga.

So of course its hot as all get out now, and word has it that IMKY will deliver its full wrath on race day. I want to get ready for heat, but at the same time, my workout quality goes way down when I run in 95 degree weather, so Ive been doing a lot of stuff early morning. How do I balance heat training and quality workouts?

68 days!

I suggest that you focus on training in the right intensity zone during you shorter ie weekday workouts and focus on "heat acclimation" during your longer weekend workouts.

That sounds like a good plan.  Do your weekday workouts hard and fast (or as directed by your plan), then in the weekend heat just put in your miles or time and don't worry about going hard.

I've decided it will be 76° for race day though.  You're welcome.

No wetsuits, sorry.  Water temp will be 77°.

I hope you're all enjoying your journey.  I was on the bike for 5 hours yesterday and so I had plenty of time to do some thinking about the training I've done and the training to come.  Ironman is so much more than a 140.6 miles; it's the long rides, runs and the countless laps in the pool.  It's dealing with the heat, with the rain, with early mornings and late nights.  There's a lot of sacrificing done along the way, but it will all be worth it.  Y'all are doing great!  Keep pushing.

Didn't I see on this thread where there were some group rides organized in Louisville on the course?

Group rides are being organized by Bob over at IamTri.  Next one is on July 10th I think.  Also, there is a short open water swim beforehand between Towhead island and the marina.  That may be your only chance to jump in the Ohio river before the race.

There are no more sponsored swims prior to any WTC events.  So no fri or sat swims in the morning or the morning of the race for that matter....

Well put. I'm sure all of us live in the same world of paradox - amazement at the 5+ hr rides & 2+ hr runs, yet still feeling as if we can & should be doing more. I'm in the best shape of my life yet I don't feel as if I am anywhere near where I need to be, and yet that's the beauty of the challenge of the Ironman. Let's roll!

WHAT?!?!?!  What happened to the Fri/Sat sponsored swims?  Is there a written explanation of this anywhere?  Geez.

Since Gatorade is no longer the beverage sponsor, and since Gatorade sponsored the practice swims, I assume that is why the practice swims have been "cancelled".

Can we organize a BT practice swim? If we have a group where we can have some people swimming and some acting as lifeguards on the shore...would that work? After all, it is a public waterway.

It may be a public area, but on raceweeked WTC will be in complete control of the area.  I doubt anyone will be allowed in the water.

I can't believe they aren't letting us in the water before the race.  I would think with that many people you would want people to acclamate to the course a little by letting us swim before hand.  I planning on going early just for the swim.

With over 120 people from BT doing the race, might we just be the largest "group" of people at this event, and if so, can't someone "official" from BT call the WTC and get a swim set up for us...fly some BT logo and make it a "club" event?  That would be uber cool.

x2

I read something that said they will not be allowing anyone to do a practice swim at almost all the races.   We will probably get a definitive answer when the athlete booklets are sent out.

We (BTer's) did a practice swim last year at B2B, and it was very helpful.  I'm all for it if it's permitted.
