misfit_1 - 2010-03-15 9:59 AM Thanks everyone for the well wishes on my half!  It was a really challenging course and I will definately do it again next year.  Was hoping to PR, but my knees (both of them!!!), wouldn't have any of it.

6 miles in, I was on my way to the PR, but in the next few miles my knees were starting to bother me.  Still OK enough to run through the pain, so I did.  Didn't realize how much I had slowed down until I heard my time at mile 9 and I realized I wasn't even go to break the 2 hour mark.  That's when I kinda gave up.  I dropped the hope for the PR, and then it was no longer about the race - it was Kim vs. the knees.  So the next 4 miles were on and off walking and shuffling.  But I still came out with a 9:36 pace which I'm still happy about considering.

Knees hurt like hell though.  This will take a while to heal; so I need to figure out how to heal whatever this is + keep training for a marathon that's only in 3 months.

Maybe it's time to see a doc?

Hope everyone else had a good weekend!!

Congrats on your half - sorry you had to shuffle through at the end.  Hope the dr can get you back on track quickly!!

mrsrudyjax - 2010-03-16 8:58 PM Hi everyone!  I finished my first half marathon on Sunday, and it was great!  I was worried about my knee, I had fallen on a run 4 days before the race and got some big scrapes.   I was also so scared of having stomach issues during the race - I had that problem on a few long runs and a nasty stomach virus hit some friends and DH a few days before the race.  But my knee was fine and no stomach issues at all.  My knee is pretty tender to the touch now, hopefully it will be better in a few days.

I had hoped to run it in 2:20, but I finished in 2:26:59.  I knew 2:20 would be a stretch.  My Garmin read 13.45 so either my Garmin was off or I did some extra zigzagging Wink

I am setting my goals on entering a couple sprints and 5Ks over the next 4-5 months, and improving my running speed.  DH wants to go to Vegas in December for the Rock N Roll marathon, I'll probably go and do the half.

Anyone have any upcoming races in a few weeks?

Congratulations on your first half!  Especially if you did even more than a half!!  You're not tempted to do the the full marathon in December?

I have another 45 mini indoor sprint in a couple weeks on 03/28/10.  There is nothing planned for April yet, but I'm sure I will somehow get sucked into some 5K's or 10k's.  I love t-shirts! Maybe I can find a small bike ride if I ever get the courage to take my bike with my new clipable shoes out!

TRIMAN413 - 2010-03-16 9:59 AM Hey kim congrats on your half.  I am sorry it didnt go the way you wanted it too.  Im sorry you are having troubles with your knees still.  I was too back in December.  I went to a doctor had an MRI and spent a whole bunch of money and mine ended up just overtraining and building to much too fast.  Thats why now I am at a snails pace building my miles.  I am strictly sticking to a 10% gain a week and I will have to admit that I have not had any pain in my knees at all.  It is taking me a while to build my miles up though.

I finally set up an appointment with an orthopedic, he specializes in sports medicine too - so hopefully he'll understand my itch to get right back into things.  lol.  I feel like it might be the IT band; and I hope that I can maintain some patience while training!!  I'll see what he says on Thursday.

Hope he can find something that helps!  Having your ortho also do sports medicine is great.  Mine is also that combination and understands that I'm not going to stop running (permanently) and helps find solutions that work with my athletic goals.

I've got the Atlanta Half Marathon this weekend and a 10k the weekend after.  Then I get to take a few weeks off from racing.

Change in plans to my race calendar.  I have to back out of the half marathon this weekend.  My husband is too busy at work to go with me, I don't think I want to drive to Atlanta by myself, my knee is sore, I haven't been training.  The list of reasons go on and on.  I'm disappointed, but I think it's for the best.

Jen - too bad, but you're probably right that it's better - the fact that I don't know when to say 'no' is what got me into the knee issue!  Got back from the doctor and it is the IT band.  Happy that it's nothing more serious.  So cross training and stretching for two week and then I can ease back into running.

Glad to hear that it is nothing more serious!!  Did he recommend a foam roller?  It's kind of torture, but it has really helped keep my ITB stretched out.

There are lots of stretches for IT band issues.

"easing back" is the part that's hardest for me. I've been really good this time coming back from my Achillies tendonitis. Six months to get up to 2.7 miles 1-2x per week? Yeah, that's "easing".

The foam roller was recommended, so I went out to Fleet Feet and got one.  Used it once...that's not fun.  lol.  But - while at Fleet Feet I also walked out with a WET SUIT!!!  Does that make me a triathlete now???  Very happy.  That was my last big purchase, and I can't wait until my outdoor swims starting in June!

Went swimming tonight, and the knee was OK - I will *try* my best to ease back into running...I know it won't be easy though!  And it'll kill me if I'm not back to long runs within a month... patience Kim...patience...

Wanted to get some feedback from you guys.  I want to sign up for a sprint distance tri on 05/02/10, a little over a month away.  The swim is indoors so they do a 'snake swim' in the pool of 7 laps...because of the set up, they want to know with the registration what your 7 lap time is.  I timed myself yesterday and today and am just over 7 minutes - so essentially 2 minutes for 100 yards.  Do you think I should put 7 minutes, or something like 6.5 with the thought that I may get faster over the next month??  My 2 minute pace is doable...I feel like I could push myself a little harder, but am also enjoying the ability to go 7 full laps without having to stop in between.  Should i see what happens if I try to sprint?

My first tri had a pool swim. At the time I had to put in my estimate I was doing about 2:00/100 so I figured I'd improve by the race and put in something faster. I ended up getting run over almost immediately and I finished up slower than 2:00. If this is your first tri I would say stay conservative and put in 1:59 just so you'll be placed ahead of the masses. If you've already tri'd and know you can handle the pressure on GO! then put in your goal time.

I find that people tend to seed themselves incorrectly in the pool swims I do, so I usually put my pace a little faster than I think I can do.  Also, a lot of people are going to put 2:00 as the time.  Put 1:59 or 1:58.

I am having major sticker shock! I went to the bike shop to look at road bikes this weekend and they're telling me I'd have to start at $800 at least for a entry-level road bike. That none of the $500 and under bikes are suitable to race. (I had budgeted $500).

I haven't been on a bike in 20 years, not entirely sure I'm going to love biking, and figured I could use the bike after the race for leisure riding and to/from work (I work 1.5 miles to campus).
I'm getting tempted to go to Target and buy a Schwinn and be done with it. Okay, no, I know I shouldn't do that. But is it really not possible to get a reasonable bike - for an 18 mile flat course for $500. I'm a little afraid to buy used just because I don't know anything, but I'm not against used per se. Can anybody suggested something for getting better educated on bike stuff. I bought a buyer's guide this weekend, but am still a little befuddled.

I am now trying to sell my entire CD collection to make up the difference, but I'm thinking it wouldn't help my training to sell a kidney for a better bike. You bikers out there, help me out - is a $500 bike REALLY a piece of junk? I'm afraid of being overwhelmed by the bike shop staff because I don't know anything (they have a great reputation, it's not their fault I'm new and ignorant). I thought a road bike is best, but given that I want to ride it later for leisure and don't care how I place, maybe a hybrid would be better for me?

HELP!?

It can be a bit of a sticker shock, but relax!  There are definitely ways to make it work in your price range!!

The biggest thing to figure out is about what size bike you need and the bike stores should be able to help you with that.  Go and ride some of the bikes and figure out what you like.  Any good bike store will not get annoyed at you for checking out bikes and not buying them.

Once you know what size you need, check out Craigslist, your tri club, etc for used bikes.  Some of your local bike stores might even sell used bikes (just have to find the right one).  You can save a lot of money getting a used road bike.

Also, a hybrid would not be a bad place to start off!  I've seen lots of hybrids in tris.  You can upgrade a bit by making sure it has slick tires because that will save you some time and effort over knobby tires.

Thanks for this. I'm just not sure how I'm going to take to biking, and I don't care how slow I race in August, so my strategy is to find a comfortable work-horse of a bike. And if I really like this tri thing, I can save up for dream bike for racing. I just don't want to end up with a bike that isn't good for comfort AND not good for racing. It should do SOMETHING well.

Sigh, so many choices!

I would definately NOT spend $800 on your first bike.  Jen gave a lot of good suggestions.  I had a mountain bike, but I thought it would be too bulky, so I bought a used bike off Craigslist.  It's almost 20 years old, but it's comfortable and I like it.  I only spent $150 because I didn't want to spend too much for a lot of the same reasons that you mentioned.

In the first tri I did, I saw lots of different bikes.  Hybrids, mountain bikes, bikes older than mine, and I even saw a BMX bike (that looked like it was for a 14 year old - that guy had it tough going up the hills)!

How is everyone doing?  I am loving the weather today.  Friday it was 70 and windy.  Saturday and Sunday - cold and windy.  We even had snow Saturday night here in Texas - enough for the kids to play in Sunday morning.  Today sunny and high 60s, and a friend watched my kids at the park so I could go on a short run!

I think both Jen and Nicole have given you great suggestions.  Especally not knowing if you even like biking - borrowing from someone for awhile sounds ideal.  I did my first tri (with a 12klm bike ride) on a mountain bike - and it was fine as a starting point to see if I even liked the sport.  Know that I know I am hooked - I'll be bike shopping too!

Artemis - 2010-03-22 12:37 PM It can be a bit of a sticker shock, but relax!

Thanks everyone! The bike shop made me think everyone would point and laugh at me if I had the "wrong" bike Cry

A co-worker who bikes is going to hit some other bike shops with me, so I'll plan to ride a few to get a feel for them and figure out what size I need and try harder to find a used one. It's a little intimidating - so thanks everyone!

I need more advice from you guys - I don't understand this IT issue because sometimes the elliptical and bike bother me and sometimes not...But - let's say it hurts to run, bike, elliptical, and even sometimes swim...what else is there for me to do to keep up aerobic endurance until I am able to do these things again?
Rowing - I don't think I have the upper body strength to keep this up for more than 10 minutes.
Dancing - or aerobics classes maybe?
Shadow boxing? but that has twisting and turning motions which I dont' think would work well...
Strength training as aerobic??

Hi all.  Sorry I havent been around much.  Work has been crazy during the day and family  after that does not leave a lot of time for the site.  I at least get on everyday to log my training in and that is about it.

How is everyone doing?  Kim-Sorry to hear you are still having some knee trouble.  I hope it works itself out for you.

I dont have any tris scheduled yet.  I am very anxious to get signed up for one.  I cant wait to try an actual event.  My training is going veru well.  A little absent in the pool but I am planning on changing that starting in April.

Hope all is well for everyone.

Sorry that you are still have IT problems.  Would just completely resting for a few days or even a week possibly help?  Sorry I don't know much about about it, but sometimes you just need a complete break.  Have you asked your dr for suggestions?
