I hate valentines day :P Anyway Considering doing a 10k run at the end of may. the question is, will I be able to do it? Current state is : constantly injured.... completely unfit....ish. havn't run in ages, been cycling a fair amount and lots of sports. I reckon If I went out tomorrow and did a run, I might manage 2k at a push. so thats 12 weeks or something, to get from 2k to 10k. and the company is subsidising it heavily. sounds like a no brainer to me :P Hmmm I'm doing about as well as you are. Hey, if you run 2k tomorrow, I'll run 2k tomorrow. Take it easy. very easy. run-walk, or go slowly enough to speak easily ... as for Valentine's Day, how about a {{{MELON PRESSS}}} and Thank you ^^^^ |

I can't imagine. I tried it once on a dare from a pastry chef friend of mine. She totally laughed as I tried to chew on it and eventually swallow the lump. I've never seen cake served with the fondant on. Usually they peel off the fondant and then serve the cake underneath. On the run thing, I would let your body rest for at least a week before you even consider a 10k training. What harm is there in resting and waiting to decide. Your injuries are a cry for total rest. Just 1 week then reassess but don't get out there and push just cuz you feel better. Sorry, coming down off my soap box now. Carry on.

Veteran 287 Pueblo, CO | Subject: RE: MAD MANATEE Mentor Group (TriAya & lmscozz)--CLOSED! Hey all - kind of dropped off last week with all that was going on. Could not get up in the AM due to just too cold (yea - negative 10 or so - not as cold as other places, but darn cold). Caused delays at school - which caused frustration getting coverage for girls in AM. On and on. But back now just it time to head to Phx for a few days. Got bike fit done on the new bike one night - went for the middle of the road ($75) fitting that included cleat check and other aspects beyond just seat height stuff. Ended up being complemented by the fitter as everything was just about nominal already (I had set it up at home on the drainer as well as during the ride a few weeks ago). He ended up not charging me so I was happy. Did get 1 run in - 1.6 miles in 12 minutes and change on Sunday. Valentine's day relay run with my girl - had a ball even with the ice and snow still on the course. (Val Run.JPG) Attachments ---------------- Val Run.JPG (50KB - 8 downloads) |

I was swimming over a 2:30/100 before my lessons (and that was really pushing it and feeling completely out of breath at the end.). Today I was at 2:11/100 and felt good at the end of it. My instructor as volunteered to take a look at my stroke any time I wanted her to (she is often at the pool when I'm swimming). All in all, a wonderful experience with my lessons. I feel like I actually know what to work on now. Thanks for everyone that encouraged me to go ahead with the lessons! |

Expert 1452 Troy, MI | Subject: RE: MAD MANATEE Mentor Group (TriAya & lmscozz)--CLOSED! Silly question from someone who really doesn't like the bike. Is spinning adequate for some training? Obviously I will go outside on the bike when its nice but if I have the choice between a boring lonely trainer and an awesome energetic spin class, I want to spin. Is it equivalent or near the trainer. I work harder in spin class than I do on the trainer or even outside. The spin bikes have RPM's, watts, resistant and mileage. I am faster on a spin bike which is why I ask. Last night I did a hill climbing class. It was harder than heck. |

Veteran 287 Pueblo, CO | Subject: RE: MAD MANATEE Mentor Group (TriAya & lmscozz)--CLOSED! jogo - 2011-02-18 5:39 AM Spin training or class is fine for training. I actally have high spin days incorporated into my training plan. What raises questions though is that you go faster during spin training - try to figure out why so you can translate it to your bike. If is is because the resistance on the bike is low- ok. Other reasons may need to be investigated. Could be your bike is not set up as well, but may also be that you are not holding a high enough cadence on your real bike. Also might be the peer pressure from he spin class/coach is higher than the pressure you put on self during real rides. Whatever the cause, just understand it and use that knowledge to improve your overall performance. Some downsides include no improved bike handling skill, different set-up on spin bike may reduce teaching your body race form/position, and understanding/learning real world bike situations. I believe these are all minor at this time of year since focus is usually on base miles and conditioning. Any other thoughts?Silly question from someone who really doesn't like the bike. Jo -- I think John covered it pretty well. I just wanted to commiserate about the bike. Of the three sports it's been my biggest opportunity for improvement, although I've managed to hold my own. If I were just a bit stronger on the bike, I'd probably be placing higher. I do know that riding my bike is the best training for riding my bike if you get my meaning. Someone has a sig line that riding hills is the only way to get better at riding hills, I think that pretty much sums it up. I also think that over time, and by time, I mean years, you can build your bike fitness. I'm only 3 years into cycling and I still have a ways to go to keep up with some of the fasties I sometimes ride (behind).

I am faster on a spin bike which is why I ask. Last night I did a hill climbing class. It was harder than heck. Thanks so much for the info. The resistance I ride with on the spin bike is pretty intense compared to my trainer. I think you hit the nail on the head with pressure. It is so intense and I don't feel the need to push myself to those levels by myself. Its also a blast because of the awesome music and someone challenging me to push the intensity. I have decent bike handling skills outside and my road bike is fit pretty well. I'm not a huge fan of the tri bike because aero is not meant for someone with G cup boobs (TMI, but there really are not many athletes with this issue and I have a very special set (pun intended) of challenges). I just tend to really pound on the spin bike. I think I could do the same on the trainer if there was someone coaching. The nice thing about the spin bikes is the data, the cadence, resistance, watts, mileage. My bike computer is not functional on the trainer. I've tried and it just wont pick up. I like the feedback. Seeing the cadence, the mileage and the speed helps me mentally. |

Congrats on the gains in swim and consistency to my manatee buddies....This sport is soooo all about mental toughness as it is physical endurance, IMHO. Like today, I didn't want to run because, well, I didn't want to run. BUT once I got out there I enjoyed myself and guess what? PB! Yippee! Totally didn't plan on that happening. I'm going to go ahead and break down and get a tri coach. I think it'll be worth it if nothing else than to keep me from over training and having a heart attack or something. I sometimes wonder if my body can handle all this...especially given my 2 packs a day smoking habit and all the sugar I eat. Joking. Seriously though...it'd be nice to have so f2f instruction (still love the mentors here, too ) My first event is in two weeks - an indoor mini tri. I'm looking forward to it. Now...if I could just get back on the weigh loss wagon... |
