I only went for a half hour not because of my lower body but because of my upper body. My hands, arms and especially my neck is so sore. I was fitted for the bike so I know that's not the issue. It's just getting used to riding in the new position. I don't have a trainer so there was no indoor build up. On the positive side I effortlessly did 8.5 miles and stay completely in zones one and two minus one big hill where I peaked into zone 4 and then back down again. Clipping and up-clipping came quite naturally as did cornering. I really concentrated on my form and felt like my strokes were very efficient. My average cadence was 82 which is slightly lower than what I wanted but for a first effort and not being completely familiar with how I wanted to work my gears I was happy. My training partner also on his bike for the first time had all the same complaints. Any tips on relaxing especially with the neck? Forearms are also sore but I think that was from gripping too hard. Had the same problem to tight of grip and a weak core |

So I just walked the rest of the way. And this has me totally freaking out about my HIM coming up in July. At what point do the events start feeling cohesive? At what point should I be able to swim 1.2 miles continuously? And can I build up safely to 13.1 miles on my knee in this time? Should I just sell my HIM bib so that I could (a) do the sprint instead the day before, (b) have enough money to do another sprint/oly this summer with the money saved, (c) watch Ryan on-course for the HIM, and (d) rest my knee a while longer? Am I in over my head? Okay, sorry about the craziness, but this has just been bugging me all day, and I have exams coming up to think about... ugh! WOAH! How about some deep breathing? 1. Are you following the plan you published to the MG? If so, trust it. You have plenty of time to get ready assuming you can get your body in order. 2. Are you still seeing a PT for that knee? Seriously, if you don't identify why it happened in the first place, you're may get better, but your'e NOT going to stay that way. You mentioned you were still planning to do rides when you're not sure you're bike is set up correctly. Really? Why risk it? Doing 1, 1.5 hours on a bad set up with a injury isn't smart. Erica, you're young. You have a long tri career ahead of you....give your body the best shot of performing well by getting healthy first....my two cents. I won't harp again because I get the feeling you know where I stand.
x2 on what Suzy says, i made the mistake about not taking care of my injuries and it's costing me big time. I've been in rehab for 3 months and my foot is back in a cast and my doc has shut me down for the next 2 months (season is pretty much done).. Figure out what is wrong and correctly fix it. |

It was so great to run Boston and know I had all of you rooting for me and following me! I can't believe I saw Christina at mile 18.5, that was really awesome, what a beautiful smile you have! Not to mention that big camera! This race was one of the best experiences of my life, despite a calf cramp that reared it's ugly head at about the 40k mark....but I really am pleased with the race and have tons of respect for the course. It is a TOUGH course, that's for sure, but the crowd support helps sooooo much! Will write a RR when we get back to SF. For now, it is off to indulge in something yummy! YOU GUYS ROCK!!! |

OK I am done complaining....like the rest of you are not busy either...... right? So feeling good about my training so far this year...I have a Sprint in May ( I almost said no sweat...but then did not want to sound too cocky and add bad karma), Oly in July (now that one scares me a little..just the swim), then a sprint in the fall...maybe sprinkle in some other races in between, this is my third year and I have been adding an extra race or challenge every year..... Every year I am feeling a little stronger and building on the previous year...longer, faster, maybe(very small maybe) smarter about my training.... So I did my first mini brick last week, got off the bike into a run and the calves started to twinge and almost cramped up....what do you think? Not enough hydration? Happened to me last year at my last race...had to stop and stretch them out....
A little late to the party, but better late than never right? I used to have the problem with calves wanting to cramp when running off the bike. I found that taking in elecrolytes on the bike and dropping it down a couple gears for a higher spin the last .75 miles or so really helps. I'll even stand on the pedals and stretch my calves as I'm coasting into transition (or the garage if it's a brick). |

x2 on what Suzy says, i made the mistake about not taking care of my injuries and it's costing me big time. I've been in rehab for 3 months and my foot is back in a cast and my doc has shut me down for the next 2 months (season is pretty much done).. Figure out what is wrong and correctly fix it. I posted on this a couple pages back, but I was never told to go through any PT, just icing and stretching. The orthpedic specialist said it was probably just from increasing my run frequency quickly because within a 2-3 week span, I went from running 2x/week to 4x/week. Is there something else I should be doing? I don't know what I can fix if the frequency was the issue? |
