Expert 939 Tulsa | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread kenbert61 - 2012-05-02 10:16 AM Rode my first 100 miler yesterday in the heat and humidity(85) that is North Carolina's Piedmont. Feel decent, now I am tired also, my New Tri Bike seems dialed in now as I am as comfortable as I have ever been on a 100 miler. A couple Bike Questions, first one might seem silly but at age 52 it's kinda important to me. are there plenty of places to hop off and take a quick leak? I figure I am gonna have to pee 3-4 times. Second question is climbing on a tri bike, do you guys stay aero the whole time? Seems I have more power sitting up on climbs....Let me put it another way....How do you guys ride and specifically this course.? Thanks There will be porta potties at most aid stations. Be prepared to stop and stand in line though. I personally sweat so much that i can rarely drink enough to have to pee. The majority of others will just go on the bike. A professional bike rider told me once that if you dip below 15mph on a hill that you should sit up because they aero position won't help you. Power is power....so more power just means more effort. I personally spin easy up the hills, push over the top and push hard on the downhills.

Thanks I can't answer the bathroom break frequency but, my guess would be there will be plenty of opportunities. I was told recently that anything under 10mph there is no benefit in being aero, at least if I remember correctly. When I rode the course a couple weeks ago I was up on the climbs, feels more comfortable while grinding it out. |

I also like to sit up on the climbs. i feel like it loosens up my back a little. being in the aero position for a long time gets uncomforbale on neck and back. regarding the pee stops, just go in your shorts. Everyone does it. |

Yeah, what Smithe said. Snowed on me yesterday morning and saw a couple more flakes this morning on the way to work. This is going to hurt my planned bike ride this afternoon. Not as bad yet as 2008 though. We had an inch of snow on the morning of June 10th that year after a long, cold spring. However, water temp on race day was up to almost 60 if I remember correctly. Happy training everyone. i think it was 57 or 58 on race day. It was cold for a Florida boy. better than 55 when we got there on Thursday. |

Member 140 Maple Valley | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread I am not a great cyclist. My HIM bike times have been 3:06 and 3:12. Climbing the CdA hills out on HWY 95 I was going 8 mph. I won't ride in aero at that speed. My coach says anyting over 13mph should be in aero. |

Member 17 Atlanta, GA | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread My fitter said I could sit up if I dipped below 17. Clearly, people have different thresholds, and it's probably based on what your overall goal speed is. When you sit up, you engage more muscles in your lower back and glutes. Thus, you'll have more power. The aero position isn't the most powerful position, but you make a trade-off for the sake of aerodynamics. If you have a good fit, the overall benefit is increased speed even though you're using fewer muscles and generating less power in aero. Once the road pitches up over about 6%, though, there is no aerodynamic advantage to be gained, and you should opt for more power (i.e. you should sit up). Sitting up on the uphills will also mix up the muscles you're using and thereby delay fatigue. All that being said, I think it's good to stay in the aero position when you're going up slight uphills in TRAINING. I think that it helps you to build power in that position, and that's good. It's less efficient, so you wouldn't want to race that way, but in training, staying aero on climbs is a good training strategy. |

Extreme Veteran 408 Spokane, Wa | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Hey guys,I got a new ride yesterday (my old frame was cracked) and the new bike has about 300 milesOn it. Unfortunately for me it has a compact front. I need a standard so if anyone is looking for a SRAM apex compact from I'd sell it for $85 shipped. It looks like they've been going for $120 on eBay. Just thought I'd see if anyone wanted some help on the hills here. |

New user 339 Salisbury | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Thanks for the very good advice on climbing, umm as far as letting it fly in my shorts I was unable to do that when I tried once, I can't be standing in line during a race, I was more hoping to un clip and let it fly just off the race course, I know in rural North Carolina that's not a big deal during races even seen women taking a quick squat, i just din't know if it was frowned upon as this is my first IM event. |

I find it easiest on a downhill. just get up off the seat to relieve the pressure and concentrate a little. as with anything, first time is always the hardest. and if anyone was drafting you, they'll get the hint to back off!!!!!!!! |

Extreme Veteran 408 Spokane, Wa | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread It's actually illegal to do in a race. It can be grounds for a dq to pee on the side of the road. You just have to relax and let it go on a downhill. Rinse with a water bottle when your done and you're good to go. |

We all know St. George is changing to a 70.3 next year, but rumors are flying down here that CdA might be in its last year as well. What are you folks hearing? Brad |

I think they're probably just waiting for any late signatures and then to make the announcement. Hopefully soon. |

Isn't IMSG getting changed because it wasn't selling out? I know the deal was already sealed for Ironman St George as far as it going to a 70.3 but if they hadn't made that decision ,yesterday would have made it for them. St. George had a reputation and I think that was a huge reason it wasn't selling out and this year it more than exceeded it's rep with a freak windstorm that blew in at 7:02, right after the start, into what WAS smooth calm water turning what promised to be a great swim into survival mode with close to 300 people getting pulled from the water. And 25 mph headwinds 40 mph gusts for 90% of the 5000 feet of climbing on the bike. With a unheard of amount of people not making the 2:05p 66 mile bike cutoff. With close to a 30% DNF . Needless to say.... I am scoping out couer d'elene but can anyone tell me if it gets windy there? I am OVER the wind and wanted to know if this course ever gets windy? What about the swim? I know it can be COLD but what about conditions? Typically calm water or ever blown out? |

Extreme Veteran 408 Spokane, Wa | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread It can be windy but a 40 mph day would be insane. The swim is usually fairly calm. The wind on the bike is typically 10-15 mph on the high end blowing out of the south. That being said, you never know what the day will bring. |

Expert 1535 Coeur D'alene, ID | Subject: RE: Ironman Coeur d'Alene : Official Thread Thought I'd throw this out there for you guys traveling from out of the area. It's kind of become a tradition that I take out of town folks on a bike course tour, usually on Thursday or Friday before the race. I can fit 4 people in my vehicle so first come, first served. If there are more than that who would like to follow along in another vehicle that's fine too. I can point out different things to watch for on the course on race day since I get to train on it all the time. Let me know if you're interested and happy training. Oh...and ride LOTS of hills this month! |

Ok just PM me when it gets closer to race day with contact info and we can figure out times, etc. Last year there were small buoys out but only about 1/4 of the course. Still gives you a chance to get used to the water temp, wind chop (if any), etc. |

I was thinking about setting up a week of training before the race for the BT group. something like 2 swims and two bike rides and a run or two. these would be short easy workouts. I also could drive a group around the course if flyboy ride gets filled up. |

I got to go down to Wildflower to race the long course and had a great race and an awesome time. If you have never done that race before it is in my opinion a must do. Also if anyone is interested in reading my race report I wrote one on here. Finishing wildflower has me even more excited about CdA. Only 7 more weeks to go!! |

That sounds great, esp for us non locals who would have to carry a map to figure our way around town. Plus I think my boyfriend wouldn't mind meeting some people he might be able to hang out with on race day. |
