I went hiking yesterday. My 8.4 mile hike turned into a 9.9 mile hike. There are 2 paths at the trailhead, one is for the AT, the other is not, I took the wrong one. I walked a little bit, then knew I wasn't in the right place. I stomped around where I was for a bit trying to figure out where the trail was, when finally I went back to the beginning and took the other path. If I'd have looked at the signs, and the map posted by the trail from the beginning I could have saved myself 1.5 miles, and about 45 minutes.

It was hot out yesterday, 85 when I got home. The last 3 miles I had to make frequent stops because I was getting overheated, I could have taken a lighter pack, too, I took my SAR backpack, it is heavy. I also learned that if I really am going to do some extended hiking anytime in the future I will need to have my left knee looked it, it killed me doing any kind of downhill. The last 2 miles were tough, the last half a mile I was in a LOT of pain. When I got home I took a shower then propped my knee up with ice packs on top of and underneath of it.

If I didn't have my trekking poles I never would have made it because I was in that much pain. I did learn that cycling gloves are an excellent choice when using trekking poles. They kept my hands from blistering, and absorbed the shock so my wrists did not have to.

All in all I was glad I got out there. Will have to KT tape my knee the next time.

That is one long hike! People who visit around here think that hiking is like taking a walk. It is hard work on your bones as well as your muscles. Good thing you had your poles, Ann.

Remember to STRETCH today!

Um... I have no doubt I could walk on the road 10 miles no problem. On the trail you have obstacles, and ups and downs, and streams to cross, and mud you walk through, and more bugs, and parts are narrow, and why does it always seem the narrow parts are where the thornes are? Walking and hiking a trail are 2 different beasts.

ironannekidd - 2012-04-16 6:22 AM Robin, what are you doing up so early?

I got up to work out and realized that I hurt too much right now so I am working (ah-hem... I really am) now and going to do my training later.

And rocks.. don't forget those rocks! For effort purposes,  I think road distance is 1/2 of trail distance.

Have you heard of Chi running/walking? It is all about aligning yourself to minimize damage to your joints, especially knees and hips.

The hubbie and I have been practicing it and I can honestly say that when I pay attention and have things lined up, there is way less effort/pain involved in running. I would expect it is the same for trail walking. They have a new trail book.

I was thinking rocks when I put in obstacles, rocks and tree roots, and slippery rocks, and all that good stuff. I could walk 10 miles in less than 3 hours. It took me almost 4 1/2 to walk just under 10 yesterday.

I am going to check out the Chi trail book.

I haven't looked at it yet. They are big into trail running. It is a huge thing around these parts. I would expect it is good. The Chi running is the best thing I have done for myself (and hubbie) for long term running with out injury. It really really really makes sense. No matter what other folks say.

While I was sleeping off my hike yesterday my BIL invited the kiddos to his uncle's pond to go fishing. All the little kiddos were invited. My BIL even took the canoe and took turns taking the kids out in it to fish. They were catching bass left and right. My son caught 10 himself, my daughter only caught 1, but from what I hear she was spending her time talking. My SIL told me this morning that all total the kids easily caught 60 fish. That's a good day of fishing for the kids.

My dad, Caleb, and I went trout fishing Saturday evening, but we only caught 2 fish between the 3 of us, and only one of them was a trout. It is only the middle of April, so I'm sure there will be lots more fishing in my future. My dad is taking Caleb to Lake Ontario in August to catch some big fish. They will spend a day and a half out on a boat. My dad goes every year with a group of guys. I know the guy who organizes it, he's a big kid himself. Knowing that guy, and my dad, if either of them gets a fish on they will hand their pole off to Caleb. They'll be gone from Thursday afternoon to Saturday night. I imagine Caleb will sleep late on the Sunday after he gets back.

Good morning Ghoulies.

Ann - Wow, that is quite the hike.  Trails definately take me twice as long as road walking.  Of course, I'm the one usually tripping over the rocks and roots.

Robin - looking forward to seeing the yard at some point this summer.  I'm pretty happy with how my front yard has shaped up with the perenials coming back up and I've added more.  We, or rather hubby, pulled up all the half dead bushes along the side of the house.  I think I'll leave that area bare this year.  Need to work on the backyard a lot more.

Good Morning!

I spent the weekend going thru papers that had been stuffed into file drawers and such.  Yuck!

But this Friday is a big shred day here in town so I wanted to take advantage of it.  I have a little shredder for day to day stuff, but the huge truck shredder is way better for a cleaned out file cabinet.

I did get a good run in, but probably should have done another.  Oh well, maybe tomorrow.  Today is work and then acupuncture.  Probably no work out yet again.

In the last few weeks I have lost 6 pounds.  That is good, but I was being really strict.  Now to see if I can maintain it.  And I would still like to lose another 2-3 pounds before my race in 4 weeks.

I bet your yards are beautiful.  Ours is very basic, low maintenance.  However, DH did mow the yard this weekend.

And ont hat note, I am off to argue withthe salesman at the auto shop. The tires he sold us with a 70,000 mile guarantee have 20,000 miles on them, and no tread left on 2 of them. Nice, huh?
