Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() bdenehy - 2012-05-10 7:44 AM Hey, hope everyone's training is moving along well. Today's training felt like the first real test of wether I am willing to pay the dues to go long distance. Up at 3:30 to get in a 3 hour brick before work. 3 weeks till the HIM and I felt pretty good. 2 hours on a trainer is definitely a record for me, and not something to make a habit of. I think the physical benefits of 2 hrs of zone 2 inside are questionable, but i wanted to grind it out to get over the mental. Plus i got to watch 3 episodes of Sons of Anarchy on the tube. Not much time for TV these days :-) The run was 7+ miles with some good hills. I learned that i will no be going sockless for anything longer than a sprint. I have been getting used to it, but a wet morning left some of my toes in bad shape. Tomorrow is just swimming, hopefully 2 swims, masters in the AM and first OWS for the year if i get out of work soon enough. This will be my last chance to get in a lake before a 5/20 sprint. They dont even let you in the lake beforehand to warm up. Who's racing this weekend? Happy training!

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Running and drinking - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jv6ZpJGLUOs Since then, I've learned to just pinch the cup and sip on it. I usually grab two. One to drink and one to pour on my head. By the time I pour the second one on my head, I throw that away, I usually still have the one that I'm drinking out of. I take SIPS. I don't gulp because that will cause side stitches. If I feel real good, then I would just pour the rest of it on my head and tuck it under my tri top strap until the next aid station to toss. No littering. Bears - They don't show up at all around here in Vegas, but Coyotes yes. My friend who is a fellow dog hiker uses a large bell around the dog's neck. The bell scares off the coyotes and snakes. It's REALLY loud, but she's deaf, so it doesn't bother her. She says it also should work on bears....but I don't know if it works differently for Black Bears and Grizzly. I didn't know that there's different reactions you have to do. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Need a little advice here.... My recovery has been going great except for some pain in and around my left knee cap. The knee has been getting better with each day. Legs are still a little sore in spots but not anything unusual. It's possible, well more likely probable, that I have a case of runner's knee. Most likely too much pounding from Sunday. My plan was to do something today but I'm holding off on that. I might go out for a short run tomorrow. I'd love to hit the bike this weekend. Any thoughts? Should I ease back into it or wait a day or 2 more for the knee to get a little better. |

I think if you tried you would find the legs are still quite fatigued. Maybe a brisk walk would be good. I also think the bike would be ok too, if you don't hammer it and stay in a lighter gear at a higher cadence. I know your swim situation, so I won't suggest getting in the water for a swim yet, but if you could find a pool it would help. |

Don't rush back into it. Listen to your body and that pain. IMO the most likely time to get injured is shortly after a big long run or a long race. I'd ease back into it. Maybe even start with a bike tomorrow, if the knee allows it. Then run when you aren't feeling pain. To me, I don't mind being a little soar going into another workout, but pain is another story. |

Robin, I think that stuff is intended for black bears, not grizzly. I have used the same product on people and it is not the magic in a can that everyone thinks. You are more than likely to get it on your own face and eyes and enhance your trouble. Talk to the dec guys and gals. I know with black bears you make noise and challenge them. Coming along. I actually have a couple two mile, outdoor, non stop runs under my belt. Next stop : Western States! The city/state officials recommend bringing bear spray with you on hikes and outdoor activities. I will ask the LRS what they suggest. Another concern for me is the 2 legged version as I most often run alone. |

I'm a HUGE fan of the Kahr MK9 or CM9, although that probably isn't going to make a bear flinch. Kahr has a PM45 but I'd imagine it'd be a bit much to handle. All of those could be easily concealed and carried. Although, where I live, I'm not supposed to know anything about that! For Illinois!!! !@#$!!!!! grrrrrrr, I like the Kimber Pepper blaster. I bought this one, and a holster for it, for my wife. It maybe worth a call to the mfg to see how the pepper would work for a bear. I'm pretty sure it's the strongest allowable pepper for a self defense purpose, but there maybe different standards for wild life protection that I'm not aware of. |

As with anything proper training an practice is KEY! but we could debate that forever. Russ, it really depends on the tri and the distance. There's a 400m swim at a local sprint that I don't wear a wetsuit for. But, 600-800 I might wear one it it's a wetsuit legal race. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey everybody, so... I've missed my last two training sessions. I'm pretty bummed about it (missing two session in a row is RARE for me). But I know its been completely nessacry. I don't want to go into too many details [though I doubt anyone is combing triathlete forums for this information], but basically a student of mine had a large crisis on Tuesday afternoon. With the direction of our school councilor, a few county child welfare employees, and the police my family has had to step up to help this student. So training has taken a back seat. Add to that already stressful and intense situation that we are moving in the next few weeks and that its the end of the school year. Yeah, so its been stressful. Not sure that I'm looking for advice or anything... I guess I just need a reminder that life does happen. And if I miss a couple training training (or even a week or two [gasp!]), that I will be fine. Edited by n.k 2012-05-10 3:10 PM |

Ha! It happens. I missed last night because of a family crisis with my wife's family. No worries Nole. Training will always be there tomorrow, but life never stops! You're a good man Nole, and a kind hart. |

The break might even be good for you. Are you a teacher? My wife has had students tell her things in confidence that are shocking. It puts her in a terrible situation because she is required by law to tell the proper authorities (and often that's the right thing to do), but the student only told her under the promise of not telling anyone else. I glad you were there to help your student through this situation. |

I've been thinking of getting a suit, but have been hesitant because I didn't want to be the only guy there with a suit on. What are your thoughts? I wear wetsuits for my sprints. Even the fastest swimmer at Irongirl and top overall winners wore wetsuits. It kind of depends on how cold the water is. If it's 72 or below, wear the suit, if over it'll be fine without it. You won't be the "only" one. Plus - double check to see if it is wetsuit legal. Some sprints will allow you wear your wetsuit, but you forfeit your AG position if you made it the top three (this happened at another race I did). |

Amen to what Ken said. A brief recovery now is much better than weeks off. Runner's knee = IT band? If so, it can flare and you'll be off it a while. Been there, done that. Foam rollers are critical plus RICE. Rest, ice, compression, elevation. 20 mins on with the ice, then off at least 20 or more, than on.... Rollers: The grid is good, the Rumble Roller is for the more advanced roller crowd and it is awesome. Wetsuits. If they are legal, I wear it. Why give the other guy a couple of minutes up on you? I did buy a sleeveless and love it way more than the one with arms which will now be only if there's ice on the water.

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kenj - 2012-05-08 4:46 AM Morning all! I hope those that raced this weekend are recovering well and that everyone's training is going well. I met with my ortho doctor yesterday to go over the results of the MRI. I honestly was expecting the results to be negative and that I had not been patient with giving it the proper time to heal. Unfortunately that isn't what he told me. It turns out that I have torn the cartilage in the shoulder socket and I have a anthroscopy (sp) on May 25th where he will go in and reattach it to the bone with a screw and stitches. The tough part of this is that I will have to keep it in a sling for 4 to 6 weeks after and I can return to biking and running sometime after that. Maybe easy bike on the trainer before but thats about it. He told me the return to swimming is probably going to be much slower, something in the 4 to 6 month range. So, for early summer I will be subbing in running races and some rides for my tri's, and give some back by volunteering to the races I was going to participate in. If the return to swimming is 4 months, IMFL may still be an option, if not I am going to do a fall marathon. There are a couple up here that don't sell out so it will be a pretty easy short term decision to make. Bummed out some, but it is what it is and no sense sulking about it. I guess for the next month or so I will have a lot more time to mentor! (and play around on BT!)
Really sorry to hear, my friend. Good news is they can repair it and you are a youngster. Lots of good years ahead. Love your attitude and plan to do what you can meanwhile. That is the key. Don't dwell on what you can't do, figure out what you can. I did that with the IT band in late 2010 with IronMan looming in the distance and my bike and swim soared and I didn't lose that much on the run. If you need an ear, let me know.

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well this weekend I have a 5k, Stethoscope and Scrubs, here in Rochester. It is a VERY hilly course so I am not expecting a PR, but just a nice time w/ some of my co-workers. One of the guys can do this course in like 18 minutes, I tell him I hate him all the time. LOL. I went out and bought some compression socks today, in black so I can wear them at work if I have too. They feel awesome on me right now. Did I need them yet? Probably not, but I know at times my legs kill me after a really good run so I figured I will wear them a couple of times a week. I have a 5k in July that I am signing up for and then also the Corporate challenge at the end of this month. Going to start training for a half in September. So I am going to keep busy with training for those. Loving my bike rides too. |

Actually though many of the sprint tris here do pool swims and no I wont wear it for those. Last few years my races in WY/CO all were never above 67degrees so wetsuit was nice. I felt very sorry for those poor souls who didn't rent/own one. Many places rent them and I did that until I was sure I wanted to do more than 1 or 2 and that is also a good way to test out different types. When I did decide to buy one I was able to pick up a slightly used rental for cheap. |

I have always worn one and my friends who are strong enough swimmers to still come out at the front without one wear them as well. They feel the give up too much without them even at the sprint distance. Whether an event is wetsuit legal is determined by the water temp. I think it is 78 degrees without looking it up, any event I have done they make an announcement about 30 minutes before the start. |
