Arrrggghhh, lots of fired-up triathletes around here. That's good! You know, one aspect of training that I really enjoy is the opportunity to listen to content on my iPod. What kind of audio do you all get on while training? I know we can't listen while racing, but that's ok. Anyway, my playlists include:

1. podcasts of political radio talk shows
2. podcast of IM Talk, the Ironman guys from New Zealand
3. music, mostly heavy metal
4. and probably my favorite, Joe Satriani, the best instrumental guitarist out there....really jams!!

What do you all jam to while hitting the mean streets?

I've been listening to audiobooks the last few months.  it really makes the time pass much more quickly both running and when I ride on a trail. I would never listen to anything riding on an open road but on my closed to motorized traffic loop I listen to audiobooks.   I love music but I am too lazy and don't have the time to look thru thousands of choices of what to buy for music therefore I have been listening to the same music for roughly a decade.  I don't think I have purchased any music in the last 5 years.   I have a hard enought time just getting my training done never mind spendinghours online researching what tunes to purchase.  I listen to the radio in the car.

Got tired of the politics and just discovered the IM Talk and Legends of IM (same guys) podcasts. I love these and there are tons to pick from to get through long ride or run

I know that they have changed the mass start that we have seen in the past and have moved to a self seeding swim start. Will we all pass over a timing mat to start our official time or will everyone's time start at the same time even though we will not enter the water at the same time? How long do you think it will take all of us to get in the water? I ask because I am a slow swimmer and while I'm confident that I can finish the swim in the allotted time, I don't need the added stress of losing 5-10 minutes before I even get in the water.

From what I was told, they will have timing mats and they will be starting the swim a little early (maybe 5 - 10 minutes) with the expectation of having everyone in the water by 7. But i have not seen that stated anywhere on Ironman.com.

I doubt it will take any longer than normal, which is pretty fast. I imagine it will be the same set up as previous years but it will be a little more organized based o projected swim time. As you can see in this video, the swim start is spread out and most people are in the water fairly quickly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ypdykp6hcVc

Kona report –
I got in the big race with a Legacy slot, I’ve written about this earlier. So I’ve been here a few days soaking it all up and it is awesome. This afternoon WTC gave the Legacy athletes a reception over at the King Kamehameha hotel luau area across from the swim start pier. I figured there would be a little you guys rock type thing. Well there was a reception line where some of the folks that were there for us the CEO of the WTC Andrew Messick in the line as well as Dave Scott, Paula Newby-Fraser, and Mike Reilly (there were a few others but my awe meter was pegged). Out of the 100 Legacy folks who were invited about 30 to 40 showed too bad for those who didn’t show but it did get those of us who did show some good face time with these legends and I split my time between Paula and Mike. Earlier in the day I had a photo op with Chrissie Wellington at the swim this morning. It has been a good week this week.

Bib 1765 for me. My AG is 360 guys deep including two TrainingBible coaches that should have pro cards.

I haven't posted much this season but have appreciated the banter on this thread - thanks!

Training is tapering down, intensity is building back up. I can't wait to get o PCB and am looking forward to the BT practice swim.

Hey, did anyone see the thread on the other board about water temp? Xterra is running a smoking deal on swimskins... Should I by one?

I posted this in the main board. Training plan had my long runs capped at 2.5 hours. I decided to run longer last night since it was the last 2.5 hour long run. Started cramping 5 minutes after. Great.

Don't freak out.  Two things in your control at that point: nutrition and intensity.  I cramped big time in the race last year at mile 20.  Eased up and slammed a bunch of gels with electrolytes.  Finished with my best marathon time ever.  (that's not saying much but it was a PB after a serious cramping of both quads and hamstrings

You could actually think of it as a learning opportunity.  how hard were you going?  When was the last time you drank or ate?  What will you do differently in the race?  Eat more?  drink different?  change your pace going into the 2 hour mark?  Take a walk break at that point?  Great lesson in having a plan 'B'

I'm not racing (I'm volunteering, with plans to race in 2014) but per my understanding it is still the same mass start, they will just facilitate self-seeding. Same start time for all AGers, no timing mat (so not like IMLP). I doubt it looks much different than year's past, they'll just have signs or corrals or something to help with the self-seeding.

I've got a big picture on my wall here at work of the swim start from IMFL 2009 and it's quite clear that a fair degree of self-seeding was happening back then. Folks are lined up 50 yards wide and 20+ people deep.

Good luck to all.

Help me build a race day check list as this is my first

I'll show up on the beach in my tri kit and wetsuit with goggles and cap in hand
T1 bag: helmet, bike shoes (I ride sockless), and tri slide
Special needs: extra tube and co2 just in case, extra bottle of Infinit in case I lose one (really plan to skip bike special needs if everything goes right)
T2 bag: socks, running shoes, visor, and body glide (maybe a gel to kick start my run)
Run Special needs bag: extra pair of socks just in case and a long sleeve shirt just in case (I plan to finish in 11-12 hours but anything can happen right?)

I've tried to train with a minimalistic approach to this, but still feel like I'm leaving things out. What do you include?

Don't forget your race belt and number.  They used to make you wear it on the bike but I guess this year you only need it on the run.  My coach says to put something in run SN to make you smile, something to look forward too.  A picture, a stuffed animal some food to look forward to something.  I put a diet coke in there and usually something to eat.  Helps getting thru the first 1/2 of the marathon

Unless you live someplace cold be prepared for COLD.  Its is far more likely to be chilly rather than warm.  Gloves for the bike, a long sleeved shirt or arm warmers for sure.  The worst thing that will happen is you will not use them.  If I recall you are fast but anything can happen on race day and I would suggest a long sleeved shirt in your run SN bag in case the day isn't going your way because the run course gets cold after the sun goes down.

You might want to consider something in the bike to run bag to clean your feet off with before you head out on the run.  I usually have baby wipes and a face cloth.  A bit of sand on your feet for 26.2 miles doens;t make it any easier.

My top IMFL tips (this is my 7th time racing there)
1-mirrored or tinted goggles.  The sun WILL be in your eyes across the top of the swim course
2-Go to the practice swims and pick out landmarks to aim for on shore.  It can be wavy and difficult to see the buoys
3-Be prepared for COLD.....see above
4-If you are going to finish late get a lite for your hat
5-If you are going to finish after dark put along sleeved shirt and or wind breaker in your run SN bag
6-Have a blast
7-Use the energy of the crowd
8-Don't get lost in the details
9-Don't let something stupid ruin your day
10-Don't let what you perceive to be a "bad" or "slow" time ruin your experience.  GO have fun.  Probably none of us are going to win or place.  Be happy you are healthy and fit enough to do this crazy sport

Suggest you develop a plan "B" clothing in case it's a chilly day.  You'll probably know the day before, but if you're thinking about what to pack you may want to take more rather than less.  A cold front can change everything.  - arm warmers, leg warmers, wind jacket, helmet liner - same ideas for the run portion.  I hope we don't need any of that - and we didn't last year, but in 2010 it was pretty chilly and windy in the morning, and evening.  -- you may not need these, but at least think about it.  12 hours is a long time to be cold, and it takes extra energy as well.

T1 - sunglasses.

On race morning you'll probably be taking your nutrition / drinks down to put on your bike.

I don't remember where you're staying, but you may want sweats for after the race in your "dry clothes" bag.  A coach told me before my first that everyone gets the shivers about 10 minutes after finishing.

I just prepared my nutrition for tomorrow, the biggest single training day of the whole plan:  6.5 hr bike, 45 min run, 1:50 swim.  Laid out transition as well.  Race rehearsal, except that I'll do the swim last because of pool hours.  I'm excited about this work out.

Did you know that if you look at the Schooner's beach cam right now you can see the moonlight reflecting off the ocean?

http://www.schooners.com/multimedia/sunsetcam.htm

Schooners is just down the beach from where we swim.  Fun cameras to look at during the day and check out how calm the water is.    Not that you would be looking at the beach in Panama City Beach rather than working.  Cool

I finished up my final century ride yesterday! All of my long rides have been very consistent in terms of pacing. My coach has had me do all of my long rides at IM wattage (so no noodling) and hence, I feel pretty comfortable at this point in knowing what I need to do in order to not "overcook" the bike portion.

I have a rest day today due to my work schedule and aside from closing out the week on Sunday with a run, for all intents and purposes... I'm officially tapering! Yahoo!

This has been an amazing (and humbling) journey. When I went up to PCB to volunteer last year, I was pretty certain that I was NOT going to register for the 2013 race. I'm really more of a short/mid course triathlete (sprint/oly/HIM) who also happens to love the half marathon & marathon. Although I've been doing triathlon for almost 6 years now, doing an IM was never, ever on my bucket list. If I didn't have friends who were also signed up, I don't think I'd be there this year.

Hence, I sort of went into this entire IMFL training cycle with a feeling of dread. I knew that training during the hottest months of South Florida's summer would be intense and would test my limits. With pure road racing, I can get a 3 hour run in before the sun is fully up in the sky. With IM bike training, I'm often finishing up during the hottest part of the day. Brutal. Also, I knew I'd have to give up some of my coveted run mileage in order to bike more and I knew this would mentally test my limits. More importantly, I knew that training for an IM would eat up precious time with my family, my pets (also family) and my friends. Tough.

That being said, I've come out relatively unscathed. I guess I'm stronger than I think, but that's what this is all about anyway, right? Pushing ourselves, seeing just how much we can tolerate, how far we can go. I had a small issue with iron stores/protein intake about a month and a half ago, but I appear to have remedied that for the most part. I also encountered no major injuries... just a few little fatigued areas here and there. So here I am, at the start of my taper, upright and feeling quite well. I still can't believe I'm about to toe the line at an iron distance triathlon. It feels surreal.

I do want to give a shout-out to my coach, Mike Plumb. His training approach is definitely quality over quantity and rarely were any of my workouts of the "stop and smell the roses" variety. My training hours per week were also more manageable than I've typically seen in iron distance plans, yet I still feel prepared. I'm upright, injury free, tired (but actually much fresher than when I was self-coached and chasing numbers/volume each week)... and I have family and friends who don't think that I've completely ditched them!

As prepared as I feel, in the back of my mind I'm still fending off those Ironman questions/concerns... namely, come race day, can I put it all together? I suppose this is very normal.

I hope that everyone who is on a 3-week taper has enjoyed an amazing, confident boosting final week of training! For those on a 2-week taper... go out there and make it really count this week!

See you all in PCB in 3 weeks! Wooo!

Hi,
long time without posting here.
Last year was my first Ironman. This year my goal is to break my 11:5X time. I think I can do it. First, if it is a little cooler (I really struggle with the heat and last year it was hot) I think I can shave some 15 min. Second, I think I will arrive this year a little bit more prepared. Last year I followed a training plan and I think the 3 week taper was a little too much for me. I feel I loose fitness very quickly, and also I feel I can recuperate from long workouts relatively quick, so my approach this year is to get to the peak training volume by next weekend. So still one more week of full training. Last year it was in early Oct, so will see. Anyone else feeling 3 weeks of taper is too much?
I look forward for those pre-race BT swims the days before, that really helped me last year.

See you soon

That's why we have the race, eh?  And you can't tell what race day will bring, I think that's part of what makes it exciting.

Great prep - see you in PCB!
