It's Hump Day, and that means it's time to talk racing.  Who's going to have some fun and make us proud this weekend?  What's your goal and your plan to achieve that goal?

And here's a question for everyone.  What's your story?  What attracted you to triathlon?  How did you get on this crazy train?

j

No racing for moi!  Good luck to any of our racing peeps!

Crazy enough, Kathy signed me up in the spring of 2007 for a 12 week Sprint Tri training group at the little local women's running store down the street from our work.  I had resisted (due to my not knowing how to swim!) and due to my work schedule, but I made some adjustments and the rest is history!

Funny, thinking back, I had to have Dad drag my rusty 10 speed out of his garage!  I bought that bike with my dim sum push cart tip money back when I was 16!  Still have it-Miyata 310, for sentimental value.

No racing here.

We might see some snow on Friday, so will have to see how things look for training and what I am going to do.

I got involved with TRI's when I went down and watched the NJ State Olympic race. I loved the energy. I was a swimmer growing up and I did run some races over the years. The excitement and atmosphere had me hooked, and meeting a lot of very cool people.

Jayne's second font looked like cyrillic on my computer... Changed it in case others were similarly challenged. My answer later.

No racing for me this weekend. I was always a runner and then I became attracted to duathlons and full of motivation to do well. I loved the bike! Even though mine was meant for a large man and I am a smaller woman. I have fixed that though and I have a nice bike for me now! Then, since I was a child swim team member and a college life guard at the beach in Wildwood, NJ, I knew I could swim. Triathlon also allows me to cross train which is a better choice for my body's health Smile

Question on calories burnt during a work out. What is more accurate my heart rate monitor or the BT computation in my training log. My HR monitor is always way higher.

Interesting article, but I'm confused too.  I would describe myself as a mid-foot striker, but when I'm feeling good and moving faster, I'm running on my forefoot.  After 15 or 20 miles, I'm plodding along on the entire foot, and I'm sure my heels are taking more of the force.

The more I get into this sport, the more questions I have.  Undecided  I just keep hoping that someday I'll be able to run without something hurting.  Oh, wait.......I'm not in my 20s anymore......nevermind. lol

To the question about the calorie calculations on BT vs. HR Monitor.  I've always felt like the numbers here on BT are pretty accurate, but I have no data to back that up.

No races for me. Good luck to all who are racing.

I have not raced yet so not sure if I qualify to be on this train. I finished P90X and could not get motivated to workout. I was telling an instructor this and he suggested Tri, so here I am.

No racing here.   I got into Tri because I wanted to see how far I could push myself and because I had the time to give it a go.

crushed a few beers at our superbowl party.  woke up in the morning and read an email saying congrats on your entry to buffalo springs 70.3, we'll see you in june.

i had no idea what the hell buffalo springs 70.3 was.

then i found out i had to swim 1.2 miles. (once i figured out that its a good idea to train for this in a pool i had to go find a pool.  found a pool later that week and could barely swim a lap.  fast forward a few weeks later.  i learned that if you take it easy in the water you actually go farther and faster.  a few weeks after that i swam a 1000 yards non-stop.  that ranks up there with a 5k pr, IM finish, etc...  i took a picture of myself that day.  and i think that's the only time i've ever taken a "serious" picture of myself as a reminder of something cool i did.  i was really proud.

then i found out i had to ride a bike 56 miles.  (i didn't own a bike)

then i found got to run 13 after that.  i was pumped!!!!  but then i read about the course being in a and out of canyons.  and that it was 113 the previous year.  i was no longer to thrilled. so i cursed the attack of the killer beers the previous night.

then i found out it was in lubbock, texas.  that sucks.  but texas tech girls are hotties.  guns up!

i joined this mentor group soon after.  i sent steve a few frantic emails a month out asking if i was going to die.

it was so hot. my time sucked.  i was p+ssing blood by mile 3 on the run.  i was badly sunburned.

mike reilly called called me in and there were coolers full of miller lite on the other side of the finish line.

its one of may favorite race days ever!!!!and favorite races ever.

later!

No races for me until June, when I will atempt my first tri, Moses Lake Oly.  Don't know when I first got the bug about going for a tri, but I have been lurking around this site for a couple years now.  This is the first year I have got my family on board with the training and really gone after it.  My wife seems pretty happy with the 11 lbs I have droped since New Years, so  I think I will keep on training.  Can't wait to see how I feel and look come June. No racing for me.  Well, I do plan to take the mtn bike out to the new trail not far from my house and set a benchmark time around it to see if I can improve on it over the next few months!  So far I am having a blast on my mountain bike - its like being a kid all over again!

As for why I started doing tri's?  Call it a lark - I had been at the gym running on the treadmill and on the spin bikes.  Some weird thought crossed my mind that I was 2/3rds of the way to a triathlon...  looked one up and gave it a go...  it was a one of those "first tri" type things - 300yds OWS, 10mi bike and 2 mi run - first I thought I was going to drown, and then I thought I was going to die on the run...  but the seed had been planted.  Did nothing for a couple of years and then not long after quitting smoking decided it would be good to do another one  (yep, that was me sitting the car having a smoke after my first tri ) - much better - wound it up and did lots of tri's over the next couple of years.  Got lazy over the last couple of years, but still have done a few tri's here and there - I am a firm believer that while they can never take away being an Ironman from you folks that go the  half and full distances, for us sprinters/oly folks you have do at least one tri a year to continue to earn the right to continue to call yourself an triathlete...  {ducks for cover}

I'm racing a night trail half marathon with Jayne this weekend! I'm not sure what the trail conditions will be like (snow? ice? probably both), so my plan is just to go out and run it and try not to hurt myself.

I got into triathlons when I got a running injury and started swimming to cross train. My mom had done a triathlon the previous summer, so I thought I could give it a try. Signed up for a sprint and loved it!

I'm running the Planet Adventure Nighttime Trail 1/2 Marathon with Julia.  One of my friends from work will be running it with me.  She has almost no trail experience, so this should be fun.  I've still got some inflammation in my knee and shin, so I'm not quite sure what will happen.

I had been lifting and spinning and was starting to have some niggles here and there.  Someone mentioned that swimming might be a great way to cross train and prevent injury.  Problem-I didn't know how to swim.  Solution, show up at the pool in a loose baggy "bathing suit", no swim cap, and goggles I had bought the night before.  I had no idea how to swim and breathe at the same time.  Couldn't get from one end to the other.  I will NEVER forget that feeling and how proud I am of the progress I've made.  You really CAN teach an old dog a new trick.

Then I had surgery on both legs for exertional compartment syndrome and voila, I could run!  Woo hoo.  I figured, if I couldn't be really good at any ONE thing, then maybe I could be good at doing several things.  I found BT very early on, and credit the mg for helping me stay motivated and help me learn the finer parts of the sport.  Like crushing beers Wink

Speaking of SUPERBOWLS!!!   Tongue out

Good luck to Jayne and Julia on their night trail race!  That sounds like a blast and a recipe for me to get a sprained ankle!  Have fun, ladies!

I swam today for the first time in over a month.  I forgot how much time I have to think about random math calculations during a 1500 yd swim! Have a great Thursday, everyone!

Good luck to the racers! Dh says I need to race as I am making plans for which races I will do for the next 3 years! Lol I will hopefully do a 5k in Feb. That should help. Dang, I sure can't wait for my first sprint!

As far as how I got into this, it was the last time I got a running injury. I was miserable so I bought a spin bike to use until I could run. Didn't take long before I was kicking myself for not getting a real bike. I decided cross training for a triathlon would be good for me. Bought a real bike and started swim lessons. I have not actually completed my first triathlon but so far I love the training. I love run races so I imagine a triathlon race will be even more fun. I believe I am hooked already.

Yep!  Running shoes too. Nothing like doing a long run next week with a temperature swing of roughly 100F.

No racing for me.  Good luck Julia and Jayne!!  Gonna be some nice PB if anyone can actually keep up with y'all!

I started doing tri's just because I had never done one.  I could swim, knew how to ride a bike (even though I hadn't in years) and ran in a past life generally referred to as college.  Since I didn't have a bike at the time, it became my reward for finishing a 5K.  After 3-4 failed attempts to finish a C25K program I joined this group, found the motivation I needed and now I have two bikes, a trainer, gloves, bike shoes, running shoes, goggles, pull buoys, a HR monitor, watches, ... wait, what?!?

Subject: new wetsuit

Swim training is coming along OK so I am now looking for a new wetsuit as I think I will be ready for some open water swims come spring time.  Does anyone have any recommendations on what brand or type of wetsuit is best for a novice?  I've read some good articles in the Gear Review section, just looking for some peoples' experience.

Thanks,

jon
