Elite 3515 Romeoville, Il | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Throw meat at a bear! Woah! I hope someone caught that on you tube for Tas.0 or Rediculousness! What Bill said on the wetsuit. Turn it inside out, stick in your feet and roll it up your body as tight as you can. Stand up straight and do air swim strokes to make sure it's not tight in the shoulders. Jennifer, I'm glad you can look back and see the sense of accomplishment. I love this sport because I'm not the down and dirty competitive type. Meaning, I'd rather compete against myself and previous times than be in an elbow smashing all or nothing sprint to the finish line. Triathlon allows you not to worry what other people are doing. Sure it's great when your times beat everyone else's, but while you're racing you don't have to mix it up with the others, you can just run your own race. Oh......and guess what.......just finishing is way better than 95% of other people who are sitting on the couch! CONGRATS! Jennifer, I am impressed with your effort out there, and I'm sure others here are too! |

Definite change of mindset, I guess.I've had a fairly successful week of training, my first in 3 weeks that I'm back on schedule. I was really tired during Masters swims this week, although this morning's swim felt a little better. I also shortened my bike ride yesterday--was supposed to do 90 minutes with 8 x 4 minute intervals at zone 4. I did the intervals but cut the ride to 1 hour 16 minutes. I was feeling fatigued and still had to go swim after, so I think it was a good decision. Have an hour and 15 minute run after work today (in the HEAT--it will probably still be 95 degrees!), the Oly tomorrow, and a 4 hour bike/45 run brick Sunday. I will be taking it SLOW for that long ride and run.Happy Friday everyone!TGIF! I don't have the link handy to the race spreadsheet, so is anyone racing this weekend?
So I did pretty well in my duathlon on Saturday, but I must admit that even though "The Swim" is my nemesis, I prefer triathlons to duathlons. It was a 2.8 mile run, 40K bike, then 5.6 mile run (2 loops of the same course on the first run). I ended up coming in 2nd overall female, which I was happy about. The first place female had 4 minutes on me, so no way to catch her, but I passed two women on the second lap of the final run to take second place. I went out a little too hard on the first run, but was with two other women (two were in front of us that we couldn't catch) and I didn't want them to get ahead. Then I had a major FAIL in T1 trying to get my 910XT onto my bike. I have a wrist strap that allows me to take off the Garmin face and put it on my bike so it's easier to see--I had practiced this a couple of times, because it's a little difficult to twist it onto the bike mount--but I had failed to practice it with sweaty hands! So I inadvertently hit the lap button a couple of times, couldn't get the stupid thing on there, put it back on my wrist and ended up not knowing my bike speed the whole time because the thing thought I was on my second run. Anyway, no big deal, lesson learned. The reason I was so sweaty is it was 100% humidity! How is that possible when it's not raining? The bike was pancake flat, a little bit of wind but nothing too extreme, and two loops so that helped a bit since I had no idea how far I had gone. I got passed by two women on the bike, which rarely happens to me, but they were fast (I had over a 22 mph average)! However, they were the two I ended up passing on the run, so I guess they overcooked the bike a bit. I wasn't sure how the second run would go, especially knowing it was two loops of the loop we had already run. But that ended up being a good thing, because I could see one of the women in front of me, and in the first loop I wasn't gaining. But I was running negative splits, and in the second loop I was getting closer and closer, then passed her, then saw the other woman and could see she was slowing as I was speeding up. I passed her with less than a mile to go, and that was tough because I knew I had to really pick up the pace so she wouldn't catch me. Legs felt fine but my lungs were having difficulty because the high humidity made it feel like I was breathing through a cheese cloth or something. In the end I was proud of my performance, but realized that even though I hate every second of the swim in a triathlon, I kind of like the change in disciplines, and I wasn't that keen on having to run again after I had already done so. But it was a good experience. And the bling? A belt buckle. Yes, a belt buckle--for Father's Day, I guess? |

Congratulations Becky! That is an impressive result! I think I have screwed something up with the 910 (had the same issues with the 310) almost every race. I either hit stop when I meant to hit lap or I set it up wrong with transitions or something. Great to get the results when I do it right, but frustrating at times. |

Just keep moving forward -- too many people don't have the time/race they want and start getting down on themselves...take what've you've learned in racing and starting applying to your workouts! Well done!! 3500 in the pool this am and heading out now for an hour run. So I need to completely rethink my IM nutrition. Did 70 miles on the bike yesterday and 35-40 miles in started having the same queasy feeling I had at my HIM 2 weeks ago. I had planned to stop at a local store 40 miles in and every bone in my body was screaming "Drink Gatorade!" Sadly they only had Powerade (blue, red or orange...yuck!) Went with orange - put it in my aero drink and took sips every 10 minutes for the first 30 then just went on thirst. Stomach issues gone - felt great - had no issues the rest of the ride. I've used Pertpetum for the past 2 years with no issues - but it just isn't agreeing with me lately. If I can come up with the right system, this would work out well as I'd be able to eat off the course at IMMT. Anyone else use sports drinks with other hydration/nutrition. I think it's a fine line when you use sport drinks with balancing calories and hydration. Going for more solid food, gatorade and water for my next long ride and just keep tweaking till it feels right. maggie I have done really well with the EFS products from First Endurance, their website is here. The EFS Drink comes in a few different flavors that are not over powering and they are tolerable when it gets warm. The EFS liquid shots are just as good and they come in a 5oz flask that is refillable if you buy the refills. I used 1 24oz bottle of the drink and one flask, plus about 32 oz of water on the bike in 90 degree heat in FL last month with no issues. I then just lived off the course for the run using mostly water and ice. For the full I am going to double, but will probably add in an uncrustable or a Cliff bar, but that is mostly mental for me as I don't think I would need the calories. The EFS products are significantly higher in electrolytes than any other product and since I am a pretty heavy sweater, this is a help. For the gel flask, I use industrial strength velcro and attach it to the top bar. I believe I got this idea from former Nike/Trek sponsored athlete with the initials LA. I know dealing with mail order is an added aggravation, but for me having something that works overcomes the added complexity. I plan on having 2 bottles and 2 flasks on the bike, with the same in special needs for IMFL and Peasantman. |

Can't wait to hear about your next race! Congrats Becky on your podium finish - 100% humidity would kill me! I have been struggling to find ways to get workouts in with the kids home this summer. So today, I took them to one of the fabulous mulit-use paths in Anchorage and while they rode their bikes, I ran. It worked great and they had a ball. Just need them to learn to "stay to the right" - my voice is a little hoarse now! |

I didn't have another IM in my vision for the future at this point but this might change things. Now I just need to manage not to make the wife mad for the next 9 hours so that she gives me a ride home! What is everyone else up to? Great way to get your run in, Ken! I would do a lot more of that if I had a shower here at work, but I don't. And with the way I sweat, especially with the humidity now, I just couldn't get through the day with a simple sink-wash! Yesterday's workout was rough--went out for a 1hr15min run at 5pm when the heat index was 98 degrees! I actually felt fine for the first 10 minutes, but then I started my intervals (3 x 6 min at Z4 with 2 min. recovery), and it went downhill from there. Also ran out of water, which was my fault for not taking enough with me. Lesson learned. The run was much slower than usual--in fact, the last 2-3 miles were at a full minute slower than my usual pace. That's okay, though, body did not want to go any faster. Hydrated very well afterwords, took a salt stick tab and Nuun in my water bottle as I headed for my swim. Still ended up with a heat-induced headache and almost skipped the swim, but I didn't. The swimming actually helped get rid of the headache, although we only got 30 minutes in before the thunder started and we had to get out of the pool (I love swimming in outdoor pools, but it sure does suck during the summer here when afternoon storms are almost a daily thing). Hopefully I can get in my brick after work today--group ride followed by a 30 minute run. What is everyone's opinion on heat training for a hot IM? Louisville is sure to be hot this year--last year it was 93, the year before 86, the year before mid-90s, etc. So partly due to scheduling, but also partly due to wanting to get used to running in the heat, I've been doing my two mid-length runs (1 hour to 1hr15 min.) after work. Yesterday was the worst so far since there was only cloud cover for 20 minutes, but it made me question whether I should maybe switch one of those runs to the morning, which I could make work in my schedule. What do you think? The other runs I do during the week are my long run which is always in the morning, then two brick runs which are either evening (30 minutes after a 45 minute bike) or mid-day (45 minutes after a long bike). |

My coach felt the same way as he had me doing the trainer rides and indoor runs in long sleeves and no fans to try and build some tolerance for the race last month. BUT, I would probably suggest that you do your race pace or easy pace runs in the heat and save your speed work for mornings or evenings after it cools off. Coming from Florida you will probably be as prepared as most people in KY!! I am fortunate to have the gym with the showers here. We have fitness classes 3 days a week at lunch time too. Interesting part of my run plan today was to run 5 miles in the second half at tempo. Tougher than I thought it would be to pick up the pace. Nice work yesterday Becky!! |

Becky, congrats on your duathlon! I did my second run-bike-run workout today and holy cow that second run is not easy. We are doing 5K run, 40K bike, 10K run. I am going to pace the first run much more conservatively based on these workouts, but it's going to be tough. |

I think my days at PT are over - my insurance did not approve any more visits Tonight I have a bike - about 35 hilly miles. One good think about my bike is my new saddle. I absolutely love it so far. My longest ride on it has only been about 60 miles, but they were all done in comfort! I even rode for about an hour last week in capri pants without a pad. (Yes, unfortunately it was cold enough that I needed them!) And even with no pad I was comfortable!! It is a rather awesome feeling for someone who has not been entirely comfortable! Karen |

Veteran 169 Stockton-on-Tees | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Thanks to you all for your encouraging words about my race. And for all the hints and tips about wet suits. I am still training - and am wondering daily about my ability to do the HIM in September. But I shall manfully train as if I am confident of completing it at the moment. My next race booked is a sprint in July. This will be a sea swim (wetsuit action again!!), bike and then partly by the beach run. The two best things about this race (although I haven,t done it before) is the 5pm Saturday afternoon start and the free pint of beer afterwards. It would be rude not to. I love the way that on this forum you discuss the best places to do an ironman ( Colorado or not) rather than your abilities to finish one. I do need to get my head to that way of thinking. You are all great. thanks again Jennifer |

Karen Karen - what type of saddle did you get? Not sure I am liking my Adamo. |
