Hi Miche, I wondered where you'd disappeared to. Way to tough it out and finish with minimal training - pretty impressive.

All - I swam 2K and ran 10K yesterday and then today I rode just over 3hrs on my bike & trainer in our group. I couldn't do it on my own but in the group I managed to keep up with everyone else and at the end I felt like I could've gone on and done more. My bike computer said I had gone 70.6km/43.9mi and that I had burned 1880 calories.

Out of curiosity, I weighed myself before and after the ride and I figure I lost 6lbs of water in the 3 hrs.

Sunday is normally my day off but if I feel good I may try a short 30min. run and then see if I can comfortably run 1hr on Monday.

Hey Rebecca, great job on finishing!  What's on the horizon now?  How's your injury?

So I sent in my cancellation email to Vineman...at least I get back $220, which will be useful, but it sucks that I won't get to do Vineman.  Maybe someday I'll come back out for it.

I've said for awhile that once I'm in a financial situation where I can afford to get a nice triathlon bike without worrying too much about the cost, plus entry fee and everything else, I'd probably like to try an Ironman, and since I'll be in the area anyways, IM Wisconsin may be on my horizon in the next few years.  But that's a long ways away.  For this year I may just call it a wash or I'll look into an oly or two near Chicago in the fall.

Since I'm not training for a race I've not really been doing too much, but one thing I did that I think I'm going to keep as part of my routine even when I am training for a race is doing circuit training during swim workouts.  For my main sets lately I've been doing 2-3 sets of stuff like burpies, pushups, dips, planks, situps, etc. in between 100's of pull/kick/swim with no rest.  So I get the swim workout and finally get the circuit work I've been meaning to get into my schedule for two years now.

Fellow Mashers

Hello Eveyone , I went for my long ride yesterday and so far its my most brutal 70 miler at the start of the ride i slipped and crashed i sprained my wrist and had bruises on my left shoulder and left knee. I have 69 miles to go and had hard time maintaining aero. I just stuck it out and it rained the first hour. I was riding wet and wet roads after. I am glad i am wearing my trisuit. The roads did not gave me a break.I dont really mind the rolling hills thats what i am after,but i have to run into 7miles of Chipseal roads. 2 miles of gravel. I am suprised i did not get a flat.It rained again in the middle of the ride .After 55 miles I really jut want to go home and rest. I just went from cruise control then saw the finish line head for my car had my bruises check by EMS and drove home tired.

Any help of recovering from a sprained wrist i appreciate? ill try to swim it tomorrow and see how it is.

I have a hilly ride again next saturday 62 miler it has 20-60% chance of rain. I dont mind the rain but going downhill on wet roads worries me or just do a long Flat 79 miler next week? advice??

@Rebecca
We miss you read your report , nice experience for a Mother nature Half marathon.

@Gary

Joe,

Sorry about Vineman. I've heard it is a great venue. You'll be about 4 hours from me once you get to Chicago (I'm in Edwardsville, IL). There are a lot of good triathlons within a day drive of you once you get settled in.

Carlo - glad you weren't hurt too badly in the crash. My only advice for riding with wet roads is to avoid paint strips and metal grates and if you have to ride over them, try not to break or turn while on them.

Rest and ice for the sprained wrist. Hope it heals up quick.

I am looking for a group to join. I started Tri's in 2004 with Team in Training. Awesome experience the team stayed together with our coach for a few years. Then I moved from SFL to Ga and stayed with it a couple of years. Got hit by a tornado in 2011 and have not done another tri since. I need to get back in shape. Back in SFL, I’m 53 weigh 215 5'7". So need to lose the lbs. I ride weekly haven’t run in few months. Ride about 16 mph avg, run very slow about 12 min a mile. I have a hip issue that keeps my miles down.
Would love to be part of a group again even if its virtual.
Married 24 yrs three kids all grown or in college. Work far from home so commute eats into training time.

@Mike and Fellow Trainees

Mike thanks for advice about recovery .I am currently doing all my workout indoors with wrist brace see how it goes. Im off this weekend but,no bike rides for me this weekend with 40% chance of rain.I might do my long run on the dreadmill and long ride on my borring 5 mile loop this sunny Fri.

I need your advice again in 3 weeks theres a HM in town. My training plan calls for a Two hour run. Would it be advisable to do it? My HIM race is 3 weeks after that.?

Cheers

Carlo

@Carlo

I would do the two hour run one or two weeks before the race depending on how much recovery you need. Here are a couple plans that both have the longest run being a week before the race.

Hi Carlo,

I think doing a HM with loads of other people around is a great way to knock off a long run. And three weeks is plenty of time. For me, I taper my running for 7-10 days max before a race. Longer race = more days.

Enjoy it!

Cheers,
Chris

Along the same lines as Carlo's question... I have been picking my events over the next 12 months (now my tri season is over). I would like to attempt my first full marathon, but it would be three weeks before my first tri of next season (an Olympic distance).

Is it too close to the tri? Do you think its too risky (injury, or just wiping out key training time for the Oly)?

This tri is one where I am travelling and spending a small fortune to take the whole family away for a week. I don't want to injure myself a couple of weeks out.

I am sure it would be safer not to do it, but I am pretty keen.

Thanks all.

Cheers,
Chris

Chris

the Marathon is a whole new animal than a Half Iron if you prepared well for a Full Mary you may average 2 weeks recovery , unlike me i was unprepared i built to 21 miles a few months before and i was only able to build up to 19 miles a few weeks to my race and i had a poor taper.I need exactly 4 weeks to get back to my running fitness. If you can follow the Full mary training plan you can recover faster. You can still swim after the Mary and your cycling fitness will come back after a week from a Mary. The 6 mile running is the problem depending how fast you recover from a Mary. If it was me and i am not able to prepare well to do the Mary i would not do the Oly.

and Chris on the side why are the Aussies hiding the missing Malaysian plane

Let us know what you decide.

Goodluck Bro!!!

Take a look at your Oly plan. Chances are three weeks before the race is one of the biggest training weeks. I haven't done a full marathon yet but a friend of mine who has says it takes a lot out of you. I think it depends on what your swim and bike fitness is going into the higher mileage marathon training weeks and what your goals are for the tri. If the tri is an A race, I think a marathon even eight weeks out is probably too close. If the tri is to have fun and you don't mind missing some swim and bike workouts, it's definitely possible.

That said, we all handle training overload and recovery differently and you know your body best. Tough decision.

Thanks Carlo and Mike,

I have watched a couple of friends run their first marathons and they were knocked around pretty hard. Long term stuff for one of them. And its terrible timing from a training perspective. I don't have a training plan but three weeks out I'll be doing quality speed work if I'm serious, certainly not one very long and slow endurance run (followed by nothing).

I'll keep building my miles and see how I'm recovering, but I might give it a miss. Challenge have just announed another HIM not far from me two weeks after the Oly, and its a good course. Now I need to think about that too because there are very few opportunities for nearby HIM's. I am very keen on this one but withaccomodation etc its get quite costly.

Cheers,

Chris

Interested to hear those replies, I was mulling over the same question a little while ago.  Could I do the Gold Coast Mara (early July)or the Brisbane Mara (early August) and still do the Challenge HIM late August? I came to the conclusion the answer was no, not because of the recovery time but because I just don't have enough training hours available to marathon train as well as the cycle and swim for the HIM. Added to that, I don't think my body would cope, I'll need to get a few more years' condition to handle those sort of stresses I think.

And the plane? We seem to have it well and truly hidden down here somewhere...

I'm at Tri-camp in Tucson for 4 days. I wish I had stayed longer! It's a live-like-a-pro program. Next year I'm DEFINITELY coming back a fitter athlete. They have been very nice to my UNFIT self, and the meals and lodging are top notch. Gotta say though, this much exercise every day is exhausting!

Cheers! Back to Miami tomorrow.

hi All - I've been training with my 15month old granddtr all week, hardest I've worked in quite awhile but they left for home tonight (8hrs north of us) so I can look forward to getting back to normal again.

I had a phenomenal week in the pool. In 3 swims I totaled 7500m/8200yds and felt pretty good. Tomorrow I have my last 2hr cycling session before moving outside and I'm hoping to also run for 1:30:00 as well (I couldn't run today because I was babysitting). I've been running pretty consistently at about 7.1min/km or approx. 11min/mile and I'm quite comfortable at that pace but when I try to push harder/faster I just can't seem to do it.

I think this weekend I want to research how to swim faster/ride faster and run faster. I can feel I'm getting stronger but not getting faster.

Beyond that I'm just carrying on.

Been struggling to get mid week workouts done. My kids and I have been fighting chest colds. On the good side of things I bought my first tri bike! i bought it off of my friend who's been pushing me to do a tri and recently upgraded his bike. He spent an hour fitting me on it which was helpful. I can't wait to get out on the roads and see how I do with aero bars and clip in pedals. I'm trying to mentally prepare myself for my first fall when I forget to pop my shoes out of my pedals!

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

The swim is ALWAYS a cause for concern when it comes to competing in a triathlon. This is the event for which you need to concentrate on RELAXING.
