I also wanted to say that is a hot bike! I love the black.

As a swimmer learning to run I want to pass along the advise that someone gave me. Swim like a swimmer, run like a runner, and bike like a biker. I was trying to do a lot of intense training while running and it just doesn't work for me. If you want to get better you should try to train like people who are focused on just that event. So for me it was learning to run slow and long. That message really stuck with me and maybe it will encourage you to give your swimming plans a new look.

Hey all, I have a few questions for the group:

1) Dennis's new bike got me wondering - what is everybody else riding? If you've been riding your current bike for a while, what do you like/dislike about it?

2) Does anyone belong to a local tri team/club? I've been thinking about joining one and I'm curious about others' experiences.

3) For the guys, I'm looking for recommendations for some new tri or bike shorts. I currently have a pair of 2XU tri shorts and a cheaper pair, but for longer training rides I could use a little more padding. Do you guys generally use cycling shorts/bibs or tri shorts for your training rides?

GO PATS!!!

1. I have an older model Kestrel with carbon frame and wheels. I like the bike, its light and does the job. I have 2 upgrades. I tri-spoke rear wheel, and a male specific Selle Italia saddle. I am always dealing with wind, so the wheel gave me an aero upgrade, but without the sail effect the disk gave me in a cross while. I started using a male specific saddle about 4 years ago after talking it about it with a friend who is a urologist. I won't go into graphic details, but leave it at it is a really good ideas for guys.

2. I am out local tri club. Not a lot of triathletes in our area

3. I have 2 pairs of tri shorts and I pair of Pearl Izumi bike shorts. I really like the Zoot shorts and haven't been disappointed with any Zoot products. I hate the PI bike shorts. They feel like wearing a full diaper.

1. I rode a Trek 1500 for about 7 years with clip-on aero bars. It was fine and worked well. December 2012 I got a power meter for it. This Christmas I got a Quintana Roo CD0.1. It has Reynolds Strike Race Wheels as well. I moved my power meter to my new bike. I haven't had the chance to ride it outside yet. The thing I love the most about it so far is the Adamo Time Trail seat. I was getting numbness on my Selle Italia (even with the cutout) and with the new seat I am a lot more comfy. I also love how the bike sexy is. It just looks fast.

2, I've thought about joining a local team but really don't have time.

3. DeSoto all day long. I have triathlon shorts and cycling bibs. I swear by both. Plus their customer service is the best. I've had some occasions where the threads at a seam were coming loose. They had me send them to them and they re sewed them. Generally their quality is "A" and their comfort is "A+". The cycling bibs are compression oriented so you get a lot of support in the quads. They're called 400 Mile Bib Shorts. Finally, if you've never tried bib shorts, treat yourself. You'll wonder why you never wore them before.

And yes...Go Pats

Another tour in the books. Went at ISLAGIAT 100% and hit every target - actually was over target. Makes no sense as my legs felt like crap and I drank 3/4 of a bottle of red wine last night at dinner. Hmmm, maybe red wine is the secret ingredient. Need a couple of days away from the trainer, but I'm in much better bike shape. Did this ride two weeks agoat FTP of 247 vs. 251 today = proof!

Great job Dave. Jim and Mitch - get 'er done before kickoff!! I'd encourage everyone to do this in 2016. It's not as bad as it seems (haaaaaa!!!).

Congratulations Dave, Joe and Mitch. I'm glad its over (especially my butt). I'm also glad I did it and I plan on doing it again next year. Some stats on the ToS. It started with 2818 registered riders. 1,115 have dropped leaving 1,703 still in the final stage. It requires commitment, consistency, and some luck. One good chest cold could ruin it for a rider.
Some personal items. I beat 8 personal records over the course of the week. Including twice breaking records for power for 60 minutes and 90 minutes. Today on trashed legs I was able to break my 90 minute record. I lost 3 lbs this week. I am going to do a 20 minute test next week. I can't say I'm excited to do that again, but I am sort of looking forward to it. or at least to see what the results were after this week.
I did discover 2 videos I like and plan on buying. I really liked The Rookie, the story is fun although they are a little nicer that I expect from a Sufferfest video. I expect more emotional abuse than they dish out. The other is the blender. I thought that was fun and gave a great variety. The Wretched is still my favorite.

A few weeks ago we had a discussion about Athlete's Heart Syndrome (AHS) and triathlon training. This week I received all of my test results and the "official" diagnosis.
Here is the story. My blood pressure has run a little hot the last couple of years. Average around 150 systolic and 80 diastolic. Except after exercise, then it would drop down to "Normal" levels. My resting heart rate would hover around 52. The normal levels are below 120 systolic and below 89 diastolic. Resting heart rate between 70 and 90.
I had my physical in December. At the physical, my BP was 152 over 119 and my resting heart rate was 50. The doctor asked me if I was still endurance training, and then said he suspected it was AHS, but needed to do an EKG. He warned me that if it is, the EKG will show an abnormality.
I took my EKG in January. The tech was a little off when I was asking her about the test, and she did a good job of sticking to the script of I only administer the test, the doctor has to read it. That afternoon, my doctor's PA called. She had the you are going to die tone. She said the EKG should an abnormality and the doctor is ordering an eckocardiogram. I asked what the abnormality was and she said it was indicative of a right ventricle blockage or right bundle branch block.
I attended the ecko test a couple of weeks ago. The tech had me set up so I couldn't see the screen. I asked her if I could watch and she told me the way it was set up I could see it. I told her what the EKG showed, but what I expected to see with AHS. She stuck to the doctor script. Part way into the echo, she had to adjust me and a stretched a little more so I could see it. Then I started asking questions about what we were looking at. She was nice and willing to show me and explained the parts. I specifically asked about seeing the right ventricle branch. She showed it to me and the function. The I said one of the keys to AHS is a thicker left ventricle she showed that to me also. Everything she showed me appeared to be correct and I she showed me the left ventricle septal which was right at 13 mm which is one of the indicators of AHS. Again she didn't say anything but she willingly answered my questions and showed me the things I asked about.
This week the my doctors PA called me, and gave me the test turned out okay everything was normal. So, I started with the questions. The flow rate from my left ventricle was at 65 % normal is 55-70%. Everything fit for AHS. No other testing was necessary.
Basically, because of the years on endurance training, my heart is stronger and more efficient. I suspect several others in the group experience the same thing. A resting heart rate below 60 bpm is the first sign. Fortunately my primary physician is familiar with endurance athletes and kept everything in check from the beginning. It is nice to have the official diagnosis of AHS.

To Echo Jim, it was a great experience. I learned alot about pushing myself when I thought I had nothing else to give. Today I shoveled snow, then did the last stage and then shoveled more snow. I set PBs for 10, 15, 20, 60, 90 and 120 minute power outputs. I bought ISLAGIATT today and really enjoyed it. Will probably buy a couple more. Some awesome workouts in there. will recover this week and start next week with a 20 minute power test and go into a Trainerroad build stage for triathletes.

This info could not have came at a better time Jim. I'm scheduled for my consultation with the cardiologist tomorrow to discuss my EKG. I now go armed with a little more knowledge, thanks!

@Beth-Thanks for the advise and I do believe I might look at my swim training.

@David-I belong to a local Tri group and find it to be not only a great asset in my training but I have also met so many people just like us. And you probably already know that its difficult to find people who understand what we do and can offer up advise. Less then a year with the club and I have already made several good friends that I socialize outside of the tri world.

All this AHS talk. Jim, you had me going and then Joe, when he said "I echo Jim".

Dennis, congrats on the half. Good luck with the cardiologist.

Dave, I have a 2012 Specialized Transition Comp that I dearly love, but I will probably upgrade this year to a QR because I get a great discount through the BSR team.

18 mile run to start the month and I'm also in a plank challenge.

Thanks Jackie. Melissa, the weather turned out to be great for a visit to the beach but horrible for a Marathon run. The day started out at 65 and the full marathon ended at 1:30 with 72. Very high humidity coming of the gulf all day which may have contributed to some slower times. I know it slowed me a bit with a finish of 2:02:55. I took a 40' break waiting for my buddy Marshall to come in from the first loop and I ran the second 13 mile loop with him to motivate him to a 5:56:20 PR.(Pic 1) As you can see from the pic I took of Pleasure Pier there was quite a bit of moisture in the air all day. The photo was taken around noon and there was still a good bit of fog. The 3rd pic is me showboating for my wife at the finish line, I don't think she was impressed at all! I will get a race report up as soon as I get an official time.

Jackie- It is okay to have AHS, it doesn't do any damage to the body, you adapt physiologically, and it does not increase the probability of heart disease later. If I stopped all endurance training for 3 months it will go away.

Congrats to the spin doctors - awesome job guys. I cannot imagine doing that much intensity on consecutive days.

Adding my numbers for Feb 1 (60 minutes on the trainer with 3 X 15' Z3) and Feb 2 (35:04 run of 6 km and 45 minutes in the pool - 1100 meter).

Sorry, didn't realize we were starting over each month, so I'm adding yesterday's 1 hour swim (2350 yds) and 90 minute trainer ride (TR "Eclipse").

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
