Has anyone found a course profile for the bike or run course? Hey now!! Yeah, that LP thread last year was awesome! The one we have this year is pretty darn good, too -- they just need some prodding from time to time. Hey, here is the bike map and elevation: http://rev3tri.com/pdfs/quassyhalfBike.pdf For the run course click on this link, and then click on the "climbs" tab - http://www.mapmytri.com/routes/view/29881882 |

We are having the course preview day once again. May 15th this year and it will be hosted by the fine folks from Target Training. You can find more information on our website.
I saw this on the rev3 page tonight. Is it free or does it cost something? I can't seem to find any other information. I tried looking on the targettraining website but couldn't find anything there either. |

Does anyone have elevation stats for the bike and run? I've seen the profile, but I'm wondering what the total gain is for each. |

Does anyone have elevation stats for the bike and run? I've seen the profile, but I'm wondering what the total gain is for each. This guy says the bike is 3517 ft. http://mattchappell.blogspot.com/2010/06/2010-rev3-quassy-half.html The link from the website says 2493 ft http://www.mapmytri.com/routes/view/28038582. To be honest, that sounds low. The run link from the Rev 3 site says 404 ft. http://www.mapmytri.com/routes/view/29881882 Which may be right as the first 2 miles are downhill and the last 5k is pretty-near flat. But it's the 10k, miles 3 through thru 9, in between that are BRUTAL. Edited by Dream Chaser 2011-04-25 2:24 PM |

Thanks. FYI, the blog linked to says 1,000' of gain on the run. It also says there were helicopters above filming. So psyched! |

Extreme Veteran 487 | Subject: RE: Revolution3 Triathlon - Quassy 70.3 : Official Thread One more FYI... mapmyride.com says my long ride last weekend was 2,392', where SportTracks with the elevation correction plugin says it was 2,648'. So that's about a 10% underestimate. If that's a consistent underestimate by mapmyride.com, their estimate for the Quassy course would go from 2,493 to ~2,750. And if that doesn't seal up my geek status, I don't know what will. |

Subject: RE: Revolution3 Triathlon - Quassy 70.3 : Official Thread 39 Days and a wake-up peeps. I'm going to pretend this is my 40-days of Lent and I'm giving up crap food: fast food, candy, cake, cookies, etc... Any additional pounds I can shed between now and Race Day will be huge for the simple fact it'll be one less pound I have to carry up the climbs. I'm hoping that with the warmer weather finally here, it'll allow me to burn off some extra weight while outside training. The key for me will be to eat enough to fuel workouts, eat enough to recover from workouts, and not eat just to eat. Everytime I even think of reaching for a snack, I'm going to remind myself of Mile 3 on the Run. Of all the road races and tri's I've done, no hill compares. I've run some brutal hills on the North Shore of Long Island, at Harriman NY State Park, and then there is the Monster Hill at Rhode Island 70.3 (which since they changed the run course I'm not sure it's still there) but none, in my opinion and from my experience, none compare to that 1-mile climb at Quassy. Perhaps it's because the climb is not a hill, but a series of steep grades that wind upward for a continous mile? Perhaps it's because it's 60+ miles into the Race? Maybe cause most of it is on a dirt road and I'm used to asphalt? Regardless, I'll be very curious to hear everyone's take on that mile-long climb post-race. If anyone who raced Quassy last year or the year before would like to comment and add their thoughts on this part of the run course, that would be super. |

Regular 113 NYC | Subject: RE: Revolution3 Triathlon - Quassy 70.3 : Official Thread I feel totally unprepared to do a 1/2 IM so soon!!!!!!!!!!!!
My compact crank is being shipped to me now. DC, do you ride a compact with your 12-27? I might swap out to a 12-27 in addition to the compact, but will wait until I get a couple miles with the compact on.
I haven't booked any place to stay yet. I hope I won't be sleeping in my car. Anyone have suggestions?

No good/close choice. Middlebury is not really near anything. its a quaint country town, so you could go with a B&B in Woodbury. I think there maybe a hotel or 2 in Waterbury or Southington, but nothing particualrly nice. If you dont mind a 30 minute ride, I'd stay at the Study in New Haven, nice boutique hotel and New Haven has really good food. a compact is the way to go no question, the course is a hilly monster. I am pretty scared.

Especially on a course like this. Here's a great reality check video. Im running an 11/28 with a compact and intend to use every gear. I know alot of people who will use a 12/27 with a compact. I've ridden the course with an 11/23 and regular crank, not fun. Edited by jsklarz 2011-04-28 6:52 PM |

Will likely do another preride (or 2) weekend before the race (memorial day weekend). |

Subject: RE: Revolution3 Triathlon - Quassy 70.3 : Official Thread Mcluvin22 - 2011-05-04 7:00 AM DC there were only videos on guys asking girls to the prom. Try this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwzRpi_Tk9I The Bike course is indeed doable. It's all about: "pacing" and "training". Meaning, if your training hills and climbing and constant gear changing for 50+ mile rides -- this bike course will be nothing new to you. If you respect the course and don't hammer from the get-go and pace yourself, again, the course is manageable. If however, you don't train hills or climbing -- this bike course can crush you. If you start out from mile 1 in Time Trial Mode and hammer every hill, by the time you reach mile 23 you will be destroyed by the 8-mile ensuing climb. At 70.3 events my bike times are just slightly better than average. Here are some comparisons: Eagleman 70.3 is a pancake flat (zero elevation) course and I averaged 20.6 MPH. Rhode Island 70.3 bike course is 1/2 flat and 1/2 rollers and I averaged 19.97 MPH. For the Quassy Bike course my average dropped to 18.24 MPH !! Living on Long Island rolling hills and long continuous climbs are not abundant, so I try and route my rides into the hilliest places possible, and do hill repeats. I also paced myself very conservatively when riding Quassy, and it resulted in a decent run. So yeah, if you train properly beforehand and pace well on race day, the course is very manageable; but this is also a course that can easily crush you and it is not to be taken lightly. |

I just checked, and last year they only had 687 athletes participate in the Half. I wonder what their cap is? I'm going to "guess" at least 1,000... |

From now till Race Day, hoping to get 3 Long Rides in and 1 medium-Long Ride, and sandwich a bunch of consistent Swimming and Running in the middle. Really looking forward to the Course Preview Ride on May 15th. I think that Ride will be very beneficial for Fitness and Strategy. |
