For some reason having a really hard time this year with it.

I'm sorry this is a hard year. I can't even imagine. Hugs to you.

I was thinking some more about that day and how emotional it was.  When I got home I watched the coverage all day.  My son was 3 1/2 at the time and was just kind of roaming around like kids that age do.  I never had a sense that he even knew what I was watching or doing.....he was just busy as toddlers are.

I was cooking dinner and still looking out into the family room at the TV.  I looked over in the dining room and saw that my son had built a tower with his legos......and then "flew" a toy plane into it.  It broke me down in a way that I'd never experienced.  I was so angry at whoever had done it.  I still am.

Wow.  The absorb so much that we don't even realize.  That would have been hard to see.

I was in Universal Studios Orlando.  We were headed to watch a scheduled show, when we were stopped from entering the area and told the park was closing.  When we asked why we were told.  Someone nearby joked to stay away from the New York area of the park.  Suddenly the anger that was directed at me that morning because I asked why the shuttle bus was late made sense.

I live near Vancouver (Canada) and I never felt so far away from home.  We got back to our hotel and watched on the TVs in the hotel bar.  I got smashed.  I was so terrified.  I tried to get home ASAP.  I tried bus, train, car rental.  There was no way to get out.  We could not get out until 4 days later; it doesn't seem like a big deal now, but at the time I was so scared.  When we got to the airport, security seemed upped, but once we checked in, no one asked to see our ID.  I could have passed my ticket to anyone, and no one would have known the difference.  We were not asked to show passports when we went through to the gate.  It did not increase my sense of safety.

In the days that followed, I gobbled up as much info about it that I could.  I had never been interested in history or wars prior to that day.  But I just needed to understand this.  And we can't.  We can only remember, and honour those who lost their lives by really living ours.

I was home w/ my family, saw things unfolding live early and got my wife up to tell her what had happened.  Our kids were very young then -- our youngest was just 5 months at that point.  I waited a bit until the hour was a little more reasonable to check on my sister and her husband.  Fortunately she had just given birth a few days earlier and so he was still taking time off with the family, otherwise it could have been a very dark day on a personal level.

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.
