Subject: RE: Scotch drinkers - suggestions please?Ohhh, a thread on real whisky, wonderful! My Dad always tells the story of the first time he allowed me a sip of his whisky and soda in a hotel room. I immediately spat it across the room, and my Dad has always joked that from then onwards that I have always been a single malt girl! For the record, I was 9 years old and the blended whisky was White Horse, and no I've never touched it again! I'm not a huge fan of the really peaty ones (Laphroaig and Talisker), as they're just a bit "medicinal" to me and bring back horrible memories of having to sore-throat-gargle with medicinal TCP when I was a kid (the Brits here will know what I'm talking about!). However, I do like some peat flavour and some of my favourite whiskys include: Isle of Jura (both the original 10-year old "Origins" and "Superstition"), Laguvulin (hey, some very peaty ones I really like!), Cardhu, Dalwhinnie, and I adore nearly all cask-strength whiskys. The taste of an unadulterated cask strength whisky evaporating on your tongue is like a little taste of heaven. Seeing the wonder on peoples faces and expressions of "wow" always makes me smile when I give them a taste for the first time. Then you can add various amounts of water to get the other flavours of the whisky, so it's like lots of different whiskys in one single bottle = magic! However, the very best single malt and cask strength whiskys I've ever tasted come from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. You have to be a member and you never know which distillery the bottle comes from (they are given numbers), but all the whiskys I bought from there (when my boss was a member) were mind blowingly good. The wonderfully descriptive (and often funny) tasting notes were works of art as well. |
