Not seen anyone mention Glengoyne yet. Very distinctive, bright, clear character  that comes from not using peat smoke during the drying process. Not better than others necessarily- just different.

Anyone try or know where to buy the Suntory Yakatori single malts? Can't seem to find it in Connecticut. I travel most of the eastern states, so if you do, at least post a state who sells it please. I've read the Japanese single malts are excellent.

I've heard the same, but haven't ever tried one.  Might have to pick up a bottle this weekend and do a test!

I tried one recently at a tasting - didn't do it for me. Then again nor did the Welsh or New Zealand single malts!

Any of the traditional single malts to compare it to?

Resurrecting this old thread because I just celebrated a "milestone" birthday and my wife got me a bottle of Bunnahabhain 18 year (Islay) and I love it, and wondered if it got any mention here.  I am afraid to see how much she paid for it, but it now ranks up there with Lagavulin as one of my favorites.

Any other new and/or memorable Scotch feedback from the crowd?

Lagavulin. If it is good enough for Ron Swanson, it is good enough for me.

Mike: I'll have a scotch on the rocks, please. Any scotch will do, as long as it's not a blend, of course. Single malt, Glen Livet, Glen Galley, perhaps, any Glen.

I like Scotch but I'm not a connesuir by any means

Taliskers is very solid and affordable

Glenlivet 18 is really good and nice for a little extra money

I tend to get good Scotch as a gift.  I have good friends.

I think I mentioned this in another Scotch thread that popped up a while back. I think I described it as The Macallan's younger, rowdy American cousin. I thought it was well worth giving a try.

This thread is making my mouth water so much....My favorites 18 yo Lagavulin... All you south of the boarder brothers and sisters can quit your complaining because that costs 113 dollars here in Ontario, Canada. 15 yo Dalwhinnie... Great gift from my wife, really enjoyed that one. 25 yo Glenlivet... My friend actually has this one, he asked me to buy him a bottle when I was in Europe. Heathrow duty free alcohol store is awesome! Got that bottle for 200 British pounds, and they had free samples of an orange cream liquor called Amarula, we sampled the $hit out of that!!!

I got a bottle of Glenlivet 18 from my dad for Christmas. You can wear that as cologne as far as I am concerned.

I've become enamored with an American Single Malt called McCarthys. Made in Oregon by the Brewers of Widmer beer. It's really unique and very good. I've only seen it at my 1 LLS (local liquor store).

Ohhh, a thread on real whisky, wonderful!  My Dad always tells the story of the first time he allowed me a sip of his whisky and soda in a hotel room.  I immediately spat it across the room, and my Dad has always joked that from then onwards that I have always been a single malt girl!  For the record, I was 9 years old and the blended whisky was White Horse, and no I've never touched it again!

I'm not a huge fan of the really peaty ones (Laphroaig and Talisker), as they're just a bit "medicinal" to me and bring back horrible memories of having to sore-throat-gargle with medicinal TCP when I was a kid (the Brits here will know what I'm talking about!).  However, I do like some peat flavour and some of my favourite whiskys include:

Isle of Jura (both the original 10-year old "Origins" and "Superstition"), Laguvulin (hey, some very peaty ones I really like!), Cardhu, Dalwhinnie, and I adore nearly all cask-strength whiskys.  The taste of an unadulterated cask strength whisky evaporating on your tongue is like a little taste of heaven.  Seeing the wonder on peoples faces and expressions of "wow" always makes me smile when I give them a taste for the first time.  Then you can add various amounts of water to get the other flavours of the whisky, so it's like lots of different whiskys in one single bottle = magic!

However, the very best single malt and cask strength whiskys I've ever tasted come from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society.  You have to be a member and you never know which distillery the bottle comes from (they are given numbers), but all the whiskys I bought from there (when my boss was a member) were mind blowingly good.  The wonderfully descriptive (and often funny) tasting notes were works of art as well.

For the budget drinkers, the Aberlour 10 yr old is probably the best bang for the buck. Love the McCallan 18 yr; but never tried the Lagavulin, so will have to try that based on the recoomendations. Also will try to find the McCarthys

Good tips on TJ's Finlaggan, Costco's "Lagavulin"...
