Keeping my kids smiling Slowly sampling my way through each and every wine ever bottled (keeping me smiling). Gosh, I seem so boring. But the tri thing is really my passion right now. Was able to run my whole run (40 minutes) yesterday for the first time without stopping....3.6 miles. Whoohoo! |

Pro 4040![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: What else floats your boat?So many things... - I'm just finishing the last of the 20 "Master and Commander" series of books. I have read them one after the other, starting last year. Patrick O'Brian is a great writer. I love fiction - Tom Robbins, Milan Kundera... many more. - I love music, jazz, Ella, Dinah Washington, Nina Simone. And tons of other kinds of music to varied to mention. - I love swimming in lakes and smelling the water, I believe that when I die, no matter where I am, I'm going to smell the sweet smell of lake water (hopefully it won't be because I'm drowning in it!). - I love cooking. Preparing a really good risotto. - Good single malt whiskey, good gin, good wine and good beer. Preferably in the same night, starting with the beer and working backwards. - I love helping my wife pursue her passion in gardening. Her happiness makes all the hours of back breaking toil worthwhile. |

Regular 178![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mound, MN | Subject: RE: What else floats your boat? You know, I've never fished Wahoo, but would give it a shot if the opportunity was there. My folks are in the Keys and most of my saltwater action is around Islamorada, mostly flats, of course aside from the Slam fish, a stray Cuda or small shark will help pass the day. My next trip I plan to try Sailfish or Marlin on a fly. Looks like it could be very fun or very frustrating. But for now, our trout season ends Friday, so I stopped by my local fly shop, picked up a few odds and ends, and will be spending the night in my tent along a river(can't post 'cause I'll be camping in an area that doesn't allow camping. The last cast blast for the year! Good Luck, Jay |

Expert 853![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Evergreen, Colorado | Subject: RE: What else floats your boat?Hmmm...my biggest interests outside of triathlon have got to be: 1) Art - mostly oil painting. My intention is to transition into a career as a painter (landscapes and commissioned portraiture) when my hubby and I have kids (I'm an engineer right now). Check out my work on my website - www.slpeterson.com 2) Backpacking/hiking/snowshoing/skiing. I LOVE living in Colorado, and when I'm not tri training, I usually get my exercise fix doing something outdoorsy. I also like to scrapbook and read, love theater and music, and play the piano. Oh, and I'm learning how to golf Edited by Stacers 2005-09-29 3:59 PM |

Champion 7036![]() ![]() ![]() Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: What else floats your boat?Having open heart surgery five years ago, influenced me to re-evaluate my priorities and how I lived my life. Outside of work (Financial Advisor) and Tri's, my time is spent with: 1. Habitat for Humanity. I spend my Saturday mornings helping to build houses. Good cause, good people and a chance to learn some useful skills. More spiritual fulfillment than sitting in a church pew on Sunday mornings. Will probably go to the gulf coast with a blitz-build group sometime next year. 2. French Horn. Like Akabak, I played semi-seriously for about ten years, including both community orchestras and some paid gigs with a brass quintet (highlight was getting to play some gigs with Ron Romm and David Ohanian, former members of the Canadian Brass). Still play a few times a year at my church and help with some school groups. 3. Working on my car (my RED CORVETTE, of course!). Do all my own routine maintenance: oil changes, brakes, plugs, etc. Love going to Sears and buying new tools. 4. Following Purdue Boilermaker (me) and Florida Gator (my kids) sports teams. Other hobbies I currently have little or no time for: -Wooden ship models -Golf -Tennis -Naps Mark |

Giver 18427![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: What else floats your boat?Lara - 2005-09-29 7:16 PM A boat floats because it displaces gravity. The water around the boat offsets the downward pull of gravity and pushes upward. The scientific name is buoyant force, or buoyancy. Solid objects, such as boat hulls, and the water displaced determine this buoyant force and the ability of the water to lift it. Density depends on size and weight, therefore in relation to boats. Water also has density and when an object is placed on its surface, it pushes aside a direct displacement of the space occupied. If the density of the object is greater than the water it has displaced, it will sink. If the water is more dense, the object will float. Boats are less dense and lighter than the water displaced -- floating your boat. OK...now I need a cold shower... |

Expert 713![]() ![]() ![]() WV | Subject: RE: What else floats your boat?1) Finishing my PhD. I just want to get this long process over and done with. I want to close this chapter and move on to a real job with a real paycheck. 2) Reading. I read non-fiction mostly. Currently I am reading Marrs book, Crossfire:The Plot that Killed Kennedy. I also read a lot of research articles. 3) Biomechanics/Sports Medicine. The human body is so amazing. It is fun trying to figure out what forces push the body to it's limits. 4) Hammer Throw. See #1. My dissertation is on this event. It is one of the coolest events in track and field. 5) Hiking/Backpacking/Travel. I don't get to do enough of this right now due to #1 6) Notre Dame Football. GO IRISH!!! |
