Out of curiosity, how far off are marathon pace and ultra pace? I'm doing my first 50 miler in April My marathon PR is 3:24 but I am shooting for a 3:20 this year so that is what I am training for pace wise. My only 50 milers I have done was in the winter in upstate NY with about 6-8" of snow on the ground and in the teens that day but my time was 8 hours and 59 minutes. My first 100 miler was done in 21 hours and 32 minutes if that gives you an idea of the difference. Although that 100 miler I did the first 50 in 8 hours 27 minutes, way to fast for this old man with 50 more to go. |

I'm hoping to break 3 hours at my marathon this weekend, and was hoping for an 8 hour 50 miler. After signing up and setting that goal I've found it's a bit of a feat to break 8. I'm lucky enough to have the course 3 miles from my house so I'll have a better idea after running it a few times |

I'm lucky enough to have the course 3 miles from my house so I'll have a better idea after running it a few times If you are a 3 hour marathoner then your 8 hour 50 mile should happen. If I was doing 50 miles during my first 100 miler I am sure I could've been awful close to coming in under 8 hours. I was holding back because I was going for 100 and I fell apart a little on the last 50 but pulled it together finally and finished strong. A couples of words of advice, find a real food you can eat without issue for the ultra, bagel, pb&j something other than gels. Bagels and fruit work well for me, another thing is it is along race and there maybe be some bad times you go through but they will pass, and there will good times too but they will pass also. Try to get in and out of the aide stations but making sure you are getting your nutrition, take it with and if you have to walk an extra 50 yards while you are eating it you are 50 yards further along, just keep moving. My 100 miler I just did a little over 2 weeks ago I did not set down once during the race, it was not until after the race was over, my first 100 I made the mistake of setting down thinking it would help me but all it did was cost me time, I still fetl crappy after I got up and moving again and it took me longer to get into a groove after setting. |

Extreme Veteran 1123 Sidney, Ohio | Subject: RE: February 100 Mile Run Challenge 25 miles in for this week, putting me at 84 total miles. The weekly total is a little short of target but my long run turned into a 5 mile race instead. Race went well for the most part and finished with a 7:20 avg pace, should have been faster but majority of the course was going up hill on slush covered roads so I took it somewhat easy. I finished strong feeling that I had a lot of energy left, I think the consistency in my running is starting to show. |

1439 | Subject: RE: February 100 Mile Run Challenge 20 miles today which gives me 81.04 for the week and 267.85 for the month. I guess I was a little low in shooting for 250 miles this month. Not sure I will make it 300 though, only 5 more days and I am starting to taper for the Tobacco Road marathon in three weeks. |

1439 | Subject: RE: February 100 Mile Run Challenge My body feels like a train wreck, not sure if it is from the killer speed work I had last week or if I ramped up to quick from the 100 miler. My right arch is sore, my lower back has been sore for a week now, my left glute and knee are acting up. If I feel better tomorrow I will do a few more miles than today but if not I will take it easy for a few days until I am feeling a bit better. I did run 3.26 miles today though. |

Expert 1130 Fernandina Beach, FL | Subject: RE: February 100 Mile Run Challenge 21.43 miles last week then ran my marathon on Sunday. Disappointing 3:38, had to bail on my race plan at mile 19 to avoid injury. With a half iron in March and 50 mile in April it just wasn't that important. Now to switch to triathlon mode. Easy recovery 3 mile today @ 122.5 for the month |

Regular 1362 Jenison, MI | Subject: RE: February 100 Mile Run Challenge Hey All, Sorry for the late update. I've had a bunch of things come up this week, and it's been hard to get on here. Also, starting tomorrow, let me know your mileage for the final week or the overall month and I'll do one final summary! I think we're going to have 6 people cross the 100 mile mark! Great work! Here's our thir update. We've only got one person over the 100 mile marker thus far, and he did it all in one day! Another is very close, and will knock it out before this week is over. Ron/navbtcret: Starting to taper down a little bit. 81.04 last week for 267.84 on the month. Robert/rjrankin83: 21.43 miles before a marathon, then added the marathon on Sunday, and my math has you a 10 miles higher than yours does at 129.5 *before* Monday's easy 3 miler. Great week, but sorry for the derailed marathon plan. Brad/MSU_Brad: 28 miles last week, holding firm on my 4 per day average - 92 on the month. Matt/mambos: Another good week, up to 84 for the month. Ben/morsebj: Also a great week, now at 83 miles. Christina/MechEChick: Right behind Matt and Ben with 82 miles. SGirl: 30 miles - no update for 2 weeks. LeCrac/James: 18 miles - no update this week. scottjjmtri99: Fighting off back issues, starting to get moving at 6 miles. No update this week. Nancy/el_penguino: MIA |
