Was reading some threads on Steelhead over on ST and some were commenting about the sandy transition area.  Anyone have any insights on the condition of the T area and whether or not its a big deal?  Just wonderin'

Figure on a 1/4-mile run from the water to the transition area.  About half on sand, about half on sidewalk (with carpet like mats).  In '06, TA was set up in the the asphalt parking lot.  In '07, it was set up in a "grassy" field next to the parking lot.  They do a pretty good job of sweeping the road out of transition, but there's sand everywhere, so it'll only be "so good."  If TA is set up in the "grass" be careful trying to run or you'll flip sand into your shoes (not good for either the bike or the run).  (I say "grass" because it's really sand with whatever grass grows well in sand, but it isn't bare sand like on the beach.

Ditto on what McFuzz said above me. Plan on a long T1. It is a little bit of  a hike and maybe more of an issue is getting out of the corral. Last year being in heat 12 or 13 I think there were a ton of people in T1 when I got there. It was in a grassy area so you had to carry your bike out to get to the pavement before jumping on.

Overall though, one of the best run races I have ever seen.

Sounds a lot like Spirit of Racine HIM....loooooong walk down the beach to the start and long run from swim exit up the beach to transition.

amiine - 2008-04-01 9:07 AM I am IN! I decided to race Steelhead intead of RI 70.3 so I'll see you guys there.

I just finished registering for Steelhead.  Decided I need to check out that little race in Clearwater in November

Crap and Double Crap!!  Now I have to figure out how to take air out of two sets of tires and not get noticed...

In regards to the sand, yes, it's a long run to T1 from the beach.  Recommend taking the wetsuit off waterside.  Transition was in an area that had some sand patches.  Normally, I leave my shoes on my bike and opted to wear them out of transition because of the sand patches.  Nothing horrible, just precautionary.

I know they are building a golf course around the transition area, so they will have to change some things up.  I'll see you guys up there...at least at the start...

Cool dude, whaddaya worryin' 'bout?  You're at least 13 years younger than me so we won't be competing for the same AG slots.  Now...Jorge's tires...that's another issue entirely

Hey, I just noticed that I've got a weekend with the kids....think I might bring 'em over for a weekend on the beach, and to watch my homies.  This should be fun.

And yes, the beach is sandy, the mats leading to transition are sandy, and the parking lot isn't swept...not a ton of sand, but enough that if you run on it, you're gonna wanna wipe your feet down. For T1, I wouldn't bother with water or a rag, just dust 'em off.  For T2, it's a question of how comfy you are with a little sand on your feet. I was fine....mostly 'cause I threw socks on. Just an idea.

This was my 1st HIM last year and will be back again in 2008!  I'm a local.  I live in South Bend, Indiana.  If you are having difficulty finding a place to stay near the venue, check out South Bend area hotels, particulary those on the West side.  It's about a 45min drive up the US-31 bypass.

McFuzz and I will be volunteering again this year! I will be in my two favorite spots--bodymarking and finish line!!!! We should put together a BT dinner on Friday night.  Brian, would you be interested in that, since you are a local?  I can't wait to see everyone!

I am signed up also, this will be my first HIM.  I have a Noobie question, under the wet-suit what do we wear, bike shorts (not too sure of this due to the sloshing) ,speedo style undies, or is there some type of shorts especially for this?

Wear tri shorts underneath your wetsuit.  Be sure you find a pair of tri shorts you like, well before race day.  Bike shorts are not designed to get wet.  Good luck

This will be my third time doing Steelhead as well. I agree with what everyone has said both pros and cons. I'll put this way, I wouldn't be back for a third time if I didn't like it. The parking situation in the morning really blows so plan extra time for it.

If you live in Chicago you can pickup your packet the weekend before at Running Away Multisport. It's pretty cool, one less thing to worry about.
