Can I get my thread back!! LOL No one answered my question of what do they do if it gets much worse? Although this is much funnier! I hope to catch on of those cat fish and draft him upstream!

One of Timdude's posts addressed the concern and apparently it will not be an issue in the Louisville area.  However, if it were unsafe to swim we would all get to run as our warm up for the bike instead of swimming.

In the event of a swim cancellation it will revert to a duathlon, with a 13.1 mile run, followed by a 112 mile bike, then a 26.2 mile run, then the catfish cook-off dinner, with the blue green algae salad!

I think I'd have to quit if that happened. 26.2miles is the longest I've ever run in one day and I really don't care to break that record.

THIS IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

Just to review a few of my quotes from a previous post the river is in perfect condition, a very slow current, low turbidities (clearer than normal), low river temps. for this time of year. Need I say more!

timdude - 2008-08-25 2:53 PM

The good news , He did say algae densities are actually quite low in the area. Just to throw out some numbers for the river.

Water temp is 81.51 our temp probe is deeper than normal so you could add a degree at the surface.
raw turbidity is 10.49 very low
raw ph 7.70
river velocity is 0.2 mph slow real slow

You just about can't beat these conditions for a river

If you all are getting squeeminsh from a few fish and snakes, then you do not want to know why the swim portion of the Tri in Cincinnati was canceled this year. Cincy is only 90 miles UPRIVER.

Was it the 'flesh eating' bacteria?

Ok.. now that everyone is done and the race is over.. I would have to say, that I do not understand why anyone would worry about this water. I saw a couple of pieces of wood / branches floating at one point and a couple of weeds, but other than that, I was actually pleased with the water. Any time I can see my fingertips with my arms completely stretched out, it is pretty clear. Most of the TRIs around here are much worse. I know someone saw a dead fish, but you can walk around any body of water and find a dead fish.

Anyone doing this race in the future... do not worry about the water. My hair was still blue when I got out, I swallowed some water at one point and didn't get sick, and I have not grown a 3rd ear or anything like that.

Two questions:

1) what did the rest of you think?

2) this one is more for Timdude (or others that may know) - the area that we did the swim, what is the water depth? From looking around I found that for the most part the Ohio river is shallow (30-40 ft), except for in the Louisville area where it averages 132ft.... and down to 168 just West of there.

My stomach didn't like the two swallows I took at all and immediately discharged all contents of my stomach during the swim. 4 or 5 times! I didn't dare try to rinse the taste out.

I honestly can't say if it was the water or not but it was an immediate reaction. It will not keep me away from doing the race again in the future. Especially after that run, I feel that the course owes me a good run!

I absolutely loved the swim!  I was disappointed when it was over.  I remember thinking at the end of the swim, "Ok, the fun is over, time to go to work."

I found the water to be as clean as any lake or slow-flowing rive I've ever been in.  I can't imagine a better place to swim 2.4 miles than in a river going mainly with the current.

The current was slower this year than last year but it was still nice to swim with the current.  I did not see any catfish, piranah or algea either.

I told y'all the water would be perfect, uh I had to start feeding carbon today because the algae monster is closing in on us.
