The announcer asked Tyler "Well you've just prolonged your racing career by at least one more year." Tyler laughed and shrugged. He seemed genuinely in shock that he had edged out Caldwell for the win. The last two circuits in the downtown area it was just the two of them cat and mousing. But when they first entered the downtown area off their last climb up Paris mountain, Garmin looked like they had control with 3 guys in the break and 2 more on the front of the chase group.barqhead - 2008-09-01 10:11 AM Everyone seems to be enjoying the long weekend. Cat, I thought of you today while I was watching the USPRO championships. It was a photo finish between Garmin-Chipotle's Blake Caldwell and Rock Racing's Tyler Hamilton. Tyler won it by one hunderdth of a second. Amazing because not only is he 37 and returning to racing after a doping suspension, but also that Garmin-Chipotle had three men in the breakaway and Tyler had no one. Sounds like Garmin may have messed that up!!! doping or not - he always was a pretty awesome athlete... hopefully it will all go his way and he will at least be able to get a few more years racing out of his team! Well good luck to him I say... Rock Racing seems to be prepared to take a chance on guys who had perhaps done the wrong thing in the past... Some people say its bad for the reputation and the sport... but in terms of business its kind of smart... its says we are the team of 'bad boys' that takes risks etc... like taking Cippo on for the Tour of california earlier in the year... As long as the guys who have been caught out in the past stay with clean records fo the future it could work out to be a very clever strategy for them! And they could also take on older well known cyclists retiring from the European scene fo a year or so which will bump up thei profile from time to time... I guess that's why they wear the black and white kits and ride solid black bikes. Bad boys I felt bad for George today. He was looking really good in the middle of the pack. My hubby walked up to an area that had a bigscreen projection of the climb up Paris Mountain while I stayed with the kids. Hubby said that the break launched on Paris Mountian. George tried to go but no one came with him. He was turning around talking to guys but couldn't get any help to bridge. Not sure where his Columbia teammates were. |

Champion 26509 Sydney | Subject: RE: Nibbs XXIV ^^^ Weird I would have thought that they would have fielded a strong team being a US race... then again I knwo that right now they have a team with cavendish in the Tour of Ireland... and Im surprised they arent contesting the Giro D'Italia... obviously with Hincapie and Cavendish their home races are more important... |

We were 150 meters from the finish line leaning over the barriers. When they crossed, we all stepped back and looked at each other. Who won? Even the announcers were stunned Then they started yelling "It's a photo finish! We'll let you know, folks." And then the rest of the break crossed. We waited. And then the chase group crossed and we waited some more. Finally "Hamilton has it!" |

Sounds like you had an awesome day! It was insane! Caldwell was in the lead when he passed us. We saw Hamilton edge up and then we didn't know who won. And nobody knew. It made standing around in the heat for three hours worth it |

Sounds like you had an awesome day! Did the family have a good time? The grown ups did. We went and played in the creek and looked at the expo and stuff between laps. Tried to get the kiddos snack and cool drinks as often as possible. My son got into it at the end because one of the riders threw a bottle into the crowd during the short downtown circuits. After that, DS was up against the barriers every time a rider passed so he could have a go at getting a bottle. |

Champion 5117 Brandon, MS | Subject: RE: Nibbs XXIV Whew... Well, the Sunday fishing trip was cancelled, and we had to come back Sunday morning instead of today. Still had a blast, though, and knowing the back roads paid off big time. It was kind of strange to be driving on I-10 East towards Mobile. We got on the interstate just north of Pensacola and saw ZERO other cars going the way we were. All in all it still turned into one of those over indulgent weekends that is the complete inverse of training And at least I had my fill of raw oysters and reds. Good to see Gustav weakened up a bit and that all the evacuations have gone really smoothly outside of the traffic. Seemed everybody kept the freak out to a minimum and just filed on out. I guess it's time to ride out the outer band thunderstorms here. |
