Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Baowolf - 2009-02-10 8:54 AM 3rd week of 5:30 am bike rides, ugh I am so not a morning person, but really need to get my bike miles up for this first IM. So, 5:30 am it is. How's everyone's base training going? Great until my old chronic post-tib tendonitis suddenly flared up last week. Seeing the doctor tomorrow...I suspect it's just past time for new orthotics...old ones have been giving me problems. No running this week, though. (Did score free accomodations for the race today, though...my sister is wine & spirits manager for Pebble Beach Resorts and she managed to hook us up with two suites in a winery's guest house near the course for the weekend--for me and my wife and for my sister and brother-in-law. Sweet!) |

Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman wesuit needed? For the 70.3 last summer (two weeks earlier than the Full), it was 75 degrees. Definitely warm enough to not need a wetsuit...but most people wore one (I did and will for the full, if it's legal). It would be a good swim for a speedsuit, though. |

You'll be fine with a speedsuit or trishorts. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Did I really sign up for a full IM? Ok not time to freek out yet. August is goning to come sooo fast this year. How's training going guys? I have been overdoing it a bit and had to take an extra rest day, ditching the long bike last weekend. Monthly totals should be around 500 miles biked, 120 miles run and 15 miles swam. I started getting up at 5:25 am to get in a 20 mile bike 4 days a week, noon for a 7 ish mile run and then the usual pm stuff. Swimming, well swimming sucks because I have to drive 100 miles each way to go swim, and well I am still just building endurance. Speed comes eventually right? Anyway 8 x 3000-4500 swim sessions this month. |

Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread After a big January, I had a recurrence of an old foot problem in early February...not really an overuse injury: my orthotics were just wearing out, it seems (saw the podiatrist last week), and I got hit very suddenly with a bout of the severe tendonitis I used to suffer from before I first got prescription inserts back in 2000. So not much running the first 3 weeks of the month...which was okay, 'cuz I was already well along in training for a marathon this spring and have plenty of running fitness to spare at this point. Just now getting back into the 105-120 total miles/week groove...last week = B 95/R 21/S 2.5. First (sprint) tri of the season is a week-and-a-half away. Still much, much, more |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread For Febuary I did: Swim 26,000 yards, Bike 519 miles and Run 114 miles. I actually signed up with a D3 coach yesterday, so I am in for some torture now. Lastnight I did strides for the first time and isolated leg pedaling (1 leg pedaling). Both exercizes were interesting and are sposed to make me less slow in time. Mostly I have beeing doing steady effort work and trying to build endurance. I will learn to workout more efficiently and effectively and maybe survive the IM 8). I have a 10 mile race on Saturday and then a HIM in Boise 6/13, but the main focus for the year is definately Vineman.

Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread --bump-- Hey...spring is here! Race is less than 20 weeks out now. Over the winter, I put in a 2 mile swim, 72 mile ride, and 18 mile run. Now I have to kind of set aside the IM-specific training to do a trail HM, Wildflower half, and LA Marathon (plus a local 5K thrown in the mix) over the next 2 months. I feel pretty good about where I am as I head into some busy racing weeks. How'd winter treat everybody? |

Mesa | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread How'd winter treat everybody? What is that? I don't understand what you call this thing "winter"? My bike training is great... I have been slacking in regards to the swim and run. But my bike training has been so good that Thursday, I was keeping up with a group that included Joseph Major (IMAZ April Champion). I have a 1/2 iron in SD next Sunday then will get my schedule down for Vineman (then Silverman then IM St. George) Edited by chile7473 2009-03-21 11:38 PM |

(Although I was going to make hotel reservations and forgot about it...) And I've barely thought about Wildflower lately...which is only six weeks away... |

Master 1588 San Francisco | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread I'm in for the full again this year along with poweredbyfear and one other guy from our tri club for the buy-2-get-1-free registration. It's poweredbyfear's first so I said I'd do it with him. I did this as my first full 2 years ago. I'm also doing this 4 weeks before IM Canada this year so that will be 2 IMs in 1 month... I'm the one who posted a photo overview of the course last year since we rode it for fun one weekend last summer. I'll try to dig that up and repost here. My comments mirror most everyone else's about the course: - swim: minimal current. Pretty warm. Shallow where, yes, your hands will probably graze the bottom - bike: is, IMHO, one of the easiest bike courses for a 140.6 race. There are only 2 moderate climbs. - run: yes, it is hilly. I walked all the uphills since it wasn't worth it to burn myself out on them. I think you have 2.5 hills on the way out, which means 2.5 on the way back and then 3 loops so you have about 15 hills to do. When I started the run, it was in the 90s so heat is a big factor on the run. |

Master 1588 San Francisco | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Course overview from when I rode it last year (that's poweredbyfear (in blue) and DW in the pictures).
We didn't do the tail section at the start from Guerneville (T1) to Westside, so here's a picture of what you'll see on Westside
These are along Dry Creek
The small climb up Canyon
After the downhill, the turn into Geyserville
Along 128
On Chalk Hill Rd.
Faught or Shiloh Rd.
Old Redwood Highway
At the end of the course, you'll roll up to Windsor High School. You'll enter on the south end so you won't pass the school as shown below, but you will if you do the full vineman.
And on the full vineman course, you'll also go through this section to reconnect the loop Edited by enginerd 2009-04-01 10:37 PM |

I was under the impression that this was a pretty tough ride. |

I guess I also compare it to century rides here in the bay area which I use as training for IMs and it's definitely easier than any of those wheras Lanzarote would be one of the hardest and Wisconsin is no cake walk either. I think Vineman has what, about 4000'-5000' elevation gain or so. To me, that's pretty moderate, which definitely made it a great choice as my first 140.6. |

I liked the fact that almost all of them appeared to be on flat ground! Sounds like we need to be prepared to run in the heat?? They only appear to be flat. Having done the 70.3, I can tell you some of those photos are of hills...you just don't have any perspective in the picture. As for heat: Average high temp in the area in August is 82F. |

Master 1588 San Francisco | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread Yeah, pictures do have a way of flattening the hills. Here's the course map with elevation profile from the vineman website: It says only 3704' of gain which isn't bad, but obviously, there are some hills. re: heat, two years ago when I started the mary, it was above 90 degrees, but you know how the weather goes. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Vineman Full Ironman : Official Thread I'm still doing the short stuff with varried intensity, 7,10, 13 mile runs, 25, 40, 60 mile bikes and 3600 yard swims, but broken up into sets of stuff. Hopefully it stops snowing before I am into the longer bike rides. And 20 miles is really long on a treadmill, although you can watch nearly an entire season of House... as it turns out. I hear the temps got up to 95 the past 2 years for the Full. I wouldn't bet on it being any cooler this year. Who has HIM's coming up as warmups for this beast? I am doing the Boisie HIM in June. |
