Well, if you had asked me in November, I would have said that we typically do not get alot of snow. However, we are on day 5 of being unable to get out off the subdivision locally. This morning, I used ski poles to get me home from 12 hr nights through the melting snowdrifts that were up to 2 ft deep in places. Definitely not typical.

But, it is all fine

Got a new bike trainer and hrm,new bike shoes and running jacket...so I am good to go
HAPPY NEW YEARS TO ALL...
AND CHEERS TO A VERY SUCCESSFUL TRAINING YEAR FOR ALL OF US
Ann

ADDED AT 1030 PM...we are shovelling out our neighbour...ah, I am so glad there are bike trainers!
ADDED AT 11AM...sunny and lovely...good day to shovel the van out of being stuck 25 ft out of the driveway as we tried to get to the pool! Main roads are great but our road impassable and more precip expected. Trainer and treadmill in basement w/o today. Then 12 hr night at work.

Happy New Year everyone!

Training in earnest starts Monday.  I'm so excited.  I'll finally have something to do other than drool at bikes on the internet...

ROFL!  You're not alone...

I started yesterday, just an easy run - didn't even meet my distance goal.  But, I am going to hit the Y tonight.  Since I have a day of momentum, I don't want to start making excuses for myself already!

So, I was being nosy (and am not very busy at work today) and another group is doing a monthly challenge.  Would that interest people in our group at all?

The one I saw was a 4 weeker and was based on distance in each of the three disciplines. It wouldn't be competitive.  But moreso a goal for all of us.

Sure, I say let's do it.  I've got a plan in place, but I'll make my goal to hit the volume in the plan, no more, no less.  Smile (More is just as bad as less at this point...)

OK, so I'll start.  Starting this Monday, for four weeks, I will do:

S: 40750.00 meters
B: 332.20 miles
R: 52.75 miles

OK, so I said it.  Now I have to do it.  Surprised

S: Honestly swimming once a week would be a good goal for January.
B: 300 road miles with mountain biking once a week.
R: 55 miles.

Core: 5 times a week for 10-20 minutes each.

I got burned out on swimming this year do to training really hard last winter.  So i don't want to start to early and get burned out again.  I'm slowly adding more miles back onto the bike so 300 is a good goal for January.  I'm slowly getting over tendinitis in my left foot, so i'm only going to be running 3 times a week for 3-7 miles this month.  I was running 35-45 a week a month back so that seems like nothing to me.  Me and three friends decided to just go to a 12 hour adventure race in early feb. So consistant training this month will be the goal

Samantha,
That seems a little low on the swimming, depending on how comfortable you are with swimming. Have you got a coach or a masters team to help you with the swimming, or are you just going to be doing laps?

I actually just joined our Y which has a Masters group (switched from our old mega-gym that I hated), but I have to talk to the coach still to find out what their paces are and if I can join at my current slowpoke status.   Considering it more, you are probably right... realistically I can expect to get to the pool 3 times/week.  Do you think 600 or 800/visit is better then?   I do have a plan and it varies, but it looks like in the coming weeks 800m is the standard per visit distance. I do know that I have to be able to do 1.5k at a pretty good clip by June.  Any suggestions are totally welcome, I don't want to overshoot but moreso I don't want to be too easy. (And eventually I will figure out this metric bizness)

The master's program would be extremely helpful, if they allow beginners. I've found having coached work outs to be extremely important in the beginning.

In general, you should probably try to quickly get up to 3 - 1 hour work outs per week. Even going as slow as I do, that will get you into the 4500 to 6000 m/week range.

Don't forget that swimming consists of two parts. You need more technique practice as well as strength training.

Thanks Brian, I will shoot for that!  I have the necessary equipment for form drills too.  I have to call the Masters coach today, will see how that goes!

I'll say x10 on the coached workouts, and that's coming from someone who is an incurable self-coacher!  When it came to swimming, I tried to teach myself, and made some progress, and maybe after 20 years I would have figured it out, but with a coach I've learned stuff that literally would have taken me years to figure out on my own.

If your masters group provides that, then great.  I tried three different ones and had terrible experiences each time, but others have had great experiences.  I hope yours is the latter.  (I ended up hiring a private swim coach with very reasonable rates and I don't regret it.)

I'll say also that I too find it very difficult to get the distance in in the pool.  I'm pretty sure that I'm just way too undisciplined in the pool -- I find that I can easily push myself running and biking, but not swimming.  But this month I've made a vow to get in 40000+ meters, and honestly I think that's what it takes with swimming for us non-swimmers -- a commitment to just do it.

I might invest in a coach specifically for me, that is also ood advice.  Swimming is my strongest sport but I know my stroke can use work (as well as my flip turns, lol).  Thanks for the advice, you guys are the best!

So here's one other thing I thought of (and I'm only half-serious) but what if I join the Master's group and I don't like it?  Then I'd have to avoid the pool on Adult Laps on Tues/Thurs/Sat... :-(

Hey Samantha

Don't know if things are different up here, but most masters clubs offer 1 or 2 week trial welcome period. If you like it and you fit in, great! If you find it is not your cup of tea, you would not have offended anyone, and might have made some friends... even if you don't stick with masters.

Only thing is, you probably have to give it more than one week to get the feel, since being a newbie to anything is tough. By week two, you would probably get a sense of whether it is what you want.

Ask around and see if the club is willing to give you a trial period as you are "not sure about committing". It really should not be a situation that makes you feel that you have to stay away from adult laps if you find it isn't right for you.

I will say that my husband really likes his masters group swims. I am not able to swim morning masters due to work scheds, but would love to! They work hard, really hard...but they have fun!

Just food for thought...

Thanks, Ann!

I did actually call and the Aquatics director was really nice and actually excited that I was calling!  They do take beginners, the only pre-req is that I am a Y member.  They divi up the lanes by speed/skill and I can just show up to swim with them!  They swim Tues/Thurs AM as well as Sat AM.  I was thinking it would probably be better to start on a Saturday just to introduce myself, etc.

Thanks for the encouragement guys, I feel good about this decision.  I think I will also look into some personal coaching too, a place by us has a swim stroke service where you endless pool it and they record it and help you tweak and refine your stroke.  Looks pretty cool!

Good Job Samantha!!

The masters swimming will be great, once you settle in...I hear it is easier to do the mileage this way...kind of like doing spin class vs trying to do the trainer alone.

I think the swim stroke analysis is a good idea, too. It helps alot with the stroke awareness and arm turnover, but I found it hard on the psyche the first time seeing my swimming on video

Good job!

Having someone review the video tape is really important. If you get a coach, you should show it to them as well, especially if it was done both over and under the water.

Thanks guys... on a happy note I saw at our Y last night for the first time since we switched from XSport.  I am happy to report that the pool was nearly empty of people, the water was clean and chloriney (how I like it) and didn't make me want to barf for swimming in it unlike our last place.  I think switching to the Y was our best move.

I am researching swim coaches bc I had to muscle through my 400m yesterday... not good!

Hi Samantha

I think everyone who does not have a swim background has had to "muscle through" initially. A good coach will take the muscle out(over time)and put the smoothness in. I watch my kids and they make it look effortless, BUT they have had hundreds of hours of consistent coaching and group workouts. A good coach really makes a huge difference...

Glad to hear the new place is gonna work for you...good way to start the New Year. You are providing motivation for me at a time when I am struggling, so I thank you.
