No problem. There's always something to learn even after 5 years of this. That's one of my favorite things about this sport.

Subject: Week 1 Tasks

What I'm working on this week:

1) I'm making a table with the information you provided in your bio so I can have a quick reference until I know where you are and where you're going. This week may be a little slow in terms of flow of specific advice or ideas for you as individuals because I'm getting things sorted. But I'll be looking at your logs, sending inspires, and answering any questions you post in here as best I can.

2) I'll be completing the third week of my BASE 1 phase. That means lot's of aerobic base training, form work in the pool, lots of stretching and my usual strength training. I'll be going to physical therapy for my shoulder a few times. Arthritis got a little out of control... nothing serious.

3) I'll be mapping out my approach to each week as your mentor. I want to try and have one education topic for the week that I can post on Monday, and you can fire off questions through the week.

4) I'll be working as closely as needed with those of you who have races in the next few weeks. Cheri has a 1/2 IM coming up soon! EEEEEP! I mean... AWESOME!

What I want you to do this week:

1) TRAIN. Do something. Anything. Even if it's walking, or getting in the pool, walking in the pool. Just get moving. Do so within any personal limitations you may have of course.

2) INSPIRE each other. Get on the training blog, add your teammates to your friendlist if you use one and send inspires. You can of course do that here in the forum if that's more your style. Or you can do like I did and add a table to your "dashboard" and link to each other's blogs that way.

3) HOMEWORK: I want you to identify your "A" race or event for 2009. Here's what I mean:

What I'm talking about when I rate an event as "A", "B", or "C", I'm referring to it's importance relative to your training calendar. An "A" race is the ultimate goal of the training plan. So if you are training for a big late season race, or maybe one where you think you can place well in your AG or overall, this is your "A" race.

A "B" race then is like a dress rehersal for your "A" race. You use this race to practice your nutrition plan by executing it the same way you would in your "A" race. It's generally shorter (i.e. an Olympic Distance "B" race is a good way to practice for an "A" race 1/2 IM. A "B" 1/2 IM is a good tune up for your Ironman, which is pretty much anyone's "A" race unless you're a complete freak.

A "C" race is essentially a catered training day. You go do your thing and people serve you food and drinks while you train, They give you a t-shirt, some free chamois butter samples, an odd flavored gel or two, and maybe a waterbottle and a bunch of printed ad material that you dispose of in a proper receptical because you're a good person. So it's probably a local race of sprint or oly distance. What I want you to do on these days is race your weakness. So if you need a lot of work on your bike, you go out and swim easy, bike at race effort, and run easy. We can look at the bike in that case as a time trial, and I can help you sort out how to maybe tweak your training to improve.

So think about what you want to do this year. I don't want any of you to think this has to be a triathlon. It could be a 5k run (or walk). It could be "run 20 minutes on the treadmill at the gym without stopping". I don't care what it is. If it's important to you, and it's your "A" race of the year, it's important to me that you get there. I'd prefer that you get there comfortably (because you followed a good plan) and confidently (because you are well trained, you are motivated, and you know what to do in race day).

Post your "A" goal here when you decide. I'll plug them into my magic MS Word table (because I am functionally computer illiterate and it works for me) when you post them. If I have a blank spot at  the end of the week I'm PM you so we can discuss what you want to do. Fire away with questions.

Have  a great Week 1!

Bill

Hey Bill (and fellow Mentorees - is that even a word?), I have identified my Races for the upcoming season and here they are:

'A' Race - Noosa (Olympic) Triathlon - November 2nd

'B' Race - Gatorade Tri Series (Sprint) - October 18th

'C' Race - Bridge to Brisbane 10k run - August 9th

I've not done an Olympic distance tri before so my 'C' Race - the 10K run in August will be 'the race of truth'. If I can't complete that then an Olympic Tri is in serious doubt!

The Sprint Tri in mid October is the first in a series of local races and I figure it will be a good warm-up / practice for Noosa. In between I plan on entering a couple cycle challenges. Not really races per se but 60+ mile events that will keep me focussed.

Later in the season I have another 'A' Race which is the Luke Harrop Memorial (Sprint) Tri. That race is also local to me and is a great event. Apart from being totally fun it showcases the Gold Coast (home of this years' ITU World Champs) and raises awareness for the safety of Triathletes / cyclists. But for now Noosa is my 'A' Race.

I welcome feedback / comments.

I've done a 10K and a canoe/bike/run Adventure race already this year that I would consider C races as well.

Rob you'd better be crazy... I'll put you on mentor group probabtion if you're not.

But the idea of a 1/2 in late October isn't crazy at all. Lot's of time to get that kind of base.  And with a good nutrition strategy and consistent, droping about 1.5 pounds a week will put you right in your goal weight range before race day.

JeepFleeb - 2009-04-20 8:33 AM A-Race (at least the one that I'm telling everyone about): Eagleman 70.3

It's a dual qualifier so I can pick-up slots for Kona and Clearwater with one race.  Typically Kona means finishing 4:30ish but Clearwater rolled down past 5:00 in my age group last year.

This race is always flat, hot and windy.
Where am I supposed to find those conditions in Texas?

Heh... if you're willing to accept humidity in the place of wind, Beaumont.

Probably doesn't help.

On Wednesday this week I have an important meeting with upper management to decide if,when, and where I may be transferring to begin upgrading my career. I work in Air Traffic Services and have been accepted to upgrade to Air Traffic Control. So I haven't quite picked out any races yet. However these are my goals.

"A" race: A sprint triathlon, somewhere in Ontario or eastern Canada, at some point this summer. (When I have a better idea what my schedule will be like I plan to sign up for one)

"B" race : possibly a try-a-tri event to tune up for A

"C" race: will be the Half Marathon here in Timmins I told my friend I would run with her in August.

That is the plan, and for now I am really just enjoying training, getting healthier and being inspired by all of my teammates here!

Keep it UP everyone!!!

and thanks to Bill for putting in the time helping us Rookies!

That is my plan. If I do not comitt to the race now I wil find all kind of excuses not to train and drop the weight. When I get to 235ish I will not as feel as crazy, but the idea lugging that extra 40 lb around for seventy miles is crazy.

I am looging my nutrition in a excel speadsheet that I made, when I have time I am going to switch over to the log on bt. I am consuming approx 2000 -2200 cal a day and would like to burn 600-1000 exersicing every day. Assuming it take me 2700 calories to function, that put me at over a 1000 cal defiect per day so dropping 1.5 lb a week is doable. Do you all think those goals are to aggressive?

Off to the pool, 1500-2000 yrds depending on how I feel. This will be third or forth time in water this year.

Where are you getting the 2700 number from?  Is that just RMR or RMR + calories burned from workouts?

That is an RMR. I have not had any test done, it is just an average from differnt websites using my sex age and weight as factors.

I'm glad Aaron is puting his 2c in on that. He's done more homework than I have on that topic. I had a lab BMR and I checked multiple online sources, and the numbers were almost identical. But I can't say I'd bank on that single experience wholly when the subjects studied n=1.

I'm glad that you're thinking that way Rob. Just be sure to remember that as you lose weight, that number will change. I would say it's a good idea to revise that number with every 10 pounds of weight lost. Not just when you fluxuate 5 lbs here or there. But when you consistently weigh 10 pounds lighter than your normal daily range of a few pounds, it's time to retest so you aren't overeating for your current weight...

Man, I LOVE me some Texas!! I'm out in San Angelo and every day is windy...temperature is the only thing that changes.

Here's what I know for sure so far:

My #1 priority is staying healthy this season.

"A" Race - IRP Wool Capital Tri (Oly) - 9 August

"B" Race - Lake Nasworthy sprint tri - 12 July
Local Air Force base sprint tri - 25 July, just for and giggles...I'd even call it a "C" race

"C" Races are mostly just local running events. I'd like to get another sprint or two under my belt if I can swing a little travel weekend. Seems to be a lot more happening further east than me, like DFW or Austin area.

Oh, and I'm torn between running the Marine Corps Marathon in late October or maybe the Longhorn 70.3 in Oct.

Anyone think it's a little too ambitious to get up to 1/2 IM distance in my 1st season? I have a running background (thank you Marine Corps) and generally love pain.

I will be starting the 20 week 1/2 Iron Program 1st week of June. I would like to incorparate a 1/2 Mary into my schedule. I have a couple of sprint lined up for June, July and early Aug. then:
"B" race Tri Oly Aug 15th
Century Ride Sept 26th
"A" race is Longhorn Half Iron Oct 25th

When would the best time to add the 1/2 Mary? Is the Century ride to close to my "A" race? I could do the 50 miler or 100 Km instead of the 100 miler if I will not have enough time to recover.

Joe my plan is to function the same way I would if you guys were local friends of mine new to the sport. You pick my brain and you get my take on the conventional thinking with regard to S/B/R nutrition, planning, and recovery. I will help you decipher your training plan and figure out how to get through the season hopefully injury free and with some sense of accomplishment.

Once I get a grasp on everyones current training and goals I'll move forward with both group and individual mentoring stuff. Hope that answers your question... glad to have you on board.

A love of pain is helpful... within reason.

Here's the thing about a 1/2 IM in your first year. You have to ask yourself 2 questions.

1) Can I swim 1.2 miles in open water in a group of 80-100+, without drowning. You find the answer to that question through experience. Swimming 2.4 miles in a pool won't tell you if you can swim 1.2 in OW. You need to KNOW you can do that. Otherwise you'll have some heavy doubt out there as you start, and that's no place to be second guessing. Believe me. I nearly tapped out on the swim a couple of times. I was never truly near drowing, but my experience was not pleasant. But by the time my first 1/2 IM rolled around the swim was my strongest discipline. You must know going in that you can do that.

2) If you can cover the swim, the next question is "How much do I want it to hurt?" A long course race (for a beginner anyway) won't hurt because you are racing at intensity like the pros. A long course race will hurt if you don't have the fitness for the distance. A well executed training plan will make for a good day. First timers should go out at a comfortable pace since they are still learning about race management. Once you get over 2 hours for a race... the margin of error for pacing and nutrition thins out quite a lot.

Looking at your logs, I think you have the potential to develop the base you need to do a 1/2 in October. You will have to know the answer to the swim question, and you'll need to bike more. But yeah, I'd say it's not unreasonable. There are people who say to wait until late in your second solid year to do long course. The answer I like is more common sense. The best time to do a long course race is when you are adequately prepared for it. If you can complete a 1/2 IM training plan between now and then and cover the swim... rock on.
