Subject: RE: Roll Call - John Tanner State Park TriCRAP! Rained out. At 6:30am, everything was still dry, but the winds indicated that rain was a-comin'. It seemed like the minute I got marked with my number, it started to rain. It came along with thunder, lightning, and wind. 7:15 rolled around and the race director gave us the news that we'll wait until 7:45 or so to make a call. 7:50: Still Raining. Race director mentions that the front is coming from Alabama. He gives us .5 hours to kill and says that at 8:20 we'll check again. 8:20: Still Raining. Race director says that (to paraphrase) if it's still raining in .5 hours, we'll have a Duathlon. If there haven't been any lightning strikes detected in the 15 or so minutes prior to that time, we'll have the full tri. 8:47 (by my watch): Big ol' lightning strike. I prep myself for a Du (which would have been 5K run, 11.2 mile bike, 5K run. The next thing I hear is that the bike has been called off and that the only thing left is to have a 5K run, sans swim and bike. I make the decision that I can run a rainy 5K any time and pack up my transition area and head home. I have, however, just signed up for the Macon Triathlon on Monday 30 May (.5 mile swim, 20 mile bike, 5K run). Dammit, I'm not gonna wait until August to make my first tri. SR |
