Subject: RE: Chicago Tri
Swam in Lake Michigan this past Saturday, and yes, it was very cold.  I honestly can't imagine anybody doing it without a wetsuit this weekend if the temps hold.  Maybe it's slightly warmer in the protected marina/harbor the race takes place in than along the Ohio St. beach route which is more open to the lake, but probably not much.  With temps not expected to be all that warm this week and possible rainfall Wed-Fri, I would imagine it will be about the same as this past weekend.  My face and hands were numb after a mile, couldn't imagine getting in that water without a wetsuit.

ps - the person on this thread worried about not being used to the wetsuit...i would say it's worth a try to use it in the race, even if it's your first time putting one on.  It will feel a little weird the first couple hundred meters, but I'm guessing after that you'll love it...swimming is easier with a wetsuit, especially if the water is so damn cold.

Wave 44; Bib 7200 here....

I will be using my sleeveless wetsuit for the first time at this event.  Yeah, I should know better and have gotten down to practice an OWS, but I just never got myself to getting around to the city to do it......my own fault and I have set expectations for race day accordingly.

Just gotta stay calm and know my limitations

Rainfall & air temps won't effect (short term) the lake temperature as much as the wind & currents. The NOAA website, which I have found to be pretty accurate for water temp, reported the Chicago shoreline was 59F yesterday (Sunday) and is 63F today. A couple of weeks ago, the lake temp dropped to high 50's low 60's and was back up close to 70F within 4-5 days, so it's certainly possible the lake temps can rebound in time for the triathlon. I certainly hope so since I am swimming it without a wetsuit!

uihockey2 - 2009-08-24 9:55 AM This will be my first time doing this race, second tri total. I'm doing the sprint, starting in wave 11. My wife has done the olympic the past few years, but she's doing the sprint with me this year. She's starting in wave 9, so it'll be fun to chase her down.

I'm excited to be competing this year instead of spectating.

Looks like your wife and I are in the same wave!

Rented one yesterday and went swimming at Ohio St. Beach........It was friggin COLD.....but not in the wetsuit. Although my face was pretty damn cold after only a quarter mi. With the water that cold I'll damn well get used to that suit real quick!! Actually swam in the suit today (somewhere not as cold) don't think I'll have any problems using it. I'll sacrifice a little bit of time getting in and out of it over the freezing a** cold water. I would highly reccomend using one if the temps are gonna be that cold next weekend.

Go to the chicago tri website and then confirm your entry http://www.chicagotriathlon.com/?q=confirm.html
Once you find your name, click on your name and you will see your wave number. Starting times have not been published as far as I know

Not trying to steal the thread, but are you guys cold in full suits or farmer johns? IF the water drops into the mid 70s here, us southerners start complaining. If anyone feels restricted in their fullsuit I would be happy to trade my sleeveless FJ for the race. Zoot XL

So ... TriOK and I are setting up a tent near Monroe and Lakeshore (just to the south of transition) to serve as a place where she can pick up her wetsuits and kind of a BT hotspot. I'm thinking of getting some sort of flag. The only one I have right now is a Dallas Cowboys flag that I could put on a flagpole. I may try to come up with something better, or something more indicative of BT. But for now, that's all I gots! Perhaps Crowny has a Chicago Fire flag? That may go over a bit better.

Anyway you all should stop by at some point (before or after) the race to say hi. We'll probably set up the tent at like 4am to secure prime real estate so if you're waiting for your wave to go and have nothing better to do, come find us.

Yeah we're in wave 56 so I figured it was either go back to the condo for four hours or just watch the race. And TriOK needed a place to gather the wetsuits she rented so we figured what the hay.

Sounds like a good idea.  I'll stop by sometime before the race and maybe afterward as well.  I am in wave 25, so I should be one of the first Olympic waves to go off.

Awesome.  Thanks for setting that up.  I'll try to stop by as well although it will be after my race I am sure since I am in wave #11.  But that way I can relax and cheer everyone else on after I am done.

Anybody swim the last 2 days. Need a temp update. I'm heading down to Ohio st tomorrow around 11am. I'm hoping to be able to use my new sleevless but if the temp is around 60 I'm going to have to go full. I hate the full.

I swam last night at Ohio street. I dont have a wetsuit, so I was just in my tri shorts. It was pretty cold, I really cant guess at a temp, but once I got in and moving, I was fine. I was really cold when I got out though. That was about 6:30 last night,

I swam at Ohio St. beach today at lunch time in a wetsuit. Web site said 70 degrees but it felt more like 63-65. Somebody told me that the water had turned over because of the winds pushing the warmer water and cold water coming in from the deep.

Bummer Summer continues.

Looks like swim at Ohio st. today is going to get rained out. If I do manage to get down there I'll try and remember to bring my fish tank thermometer and get everybody a reading.
Did anyone notice the forecast for Sat. night into Sunday. 49 for a low and 66 for a high. HMMM. Might just have to keep that wetsuit on right through the bike portion. That would be an interesting look. Anybody here ever race in these kind of conditions before? Perfect college football tailgaiting weather FOR OCTOBER THAT IS.

Hit the beach last night.  The water was AWESOME!  I would guess it was at about 65.  SOOOOO much warmer than this past weekend.  Still cool but with the wetsuit on it was lovely!  And relatively calm too.
