My gf and I are doing this as our first HIM, 3rd Tri overall.  We are psyched.  Been training steadily since Jan 1.  Quite pleased to see the run is mostly downhill....

Thanks cusetri, I feel much better about this. I did my second ride for the week today, another 20 miles, alot different than the first ride. I felt less sore on the "goods", my legs weren't as tired too. Around mile 13 I felt like I wasn't going to make it, but right around 15 I caught a second wind and pushed through to the end. After today's ride I think i'll be ok.

So question, what pace are you guys riding on the bike, I did my 20 miles in about an hour and 45. My avg speed was around 13-15 miles an hour. I'm not sure if there are any variables that are different from road to trainer, but just so I can get an idea of where I should be speed-wise. I just want to make sure I'll finish the bike course in enough time.

So about the coupon, haha so when I signed up I figured I'd be paying $250 flat... maybe tax. But they add like a "processing fee" and I also had to pay the non-USAT fee. So jokingly I told my gf I was going to see if they had a coupon, since she recently got me into coupon cutting. Haha, low and behold the fleet feet coupon. So, since I was able to use it, I suppose there's less than 500 signed up so far

Even though you raise a valid question, if this is your 1st HIM, I wouldn't concern yourself tht much with speed.  Just focus on time in the saddle.  That being said, there are variables that greatly affect trainers vs outdoor rides so MPH will differ.  However, being comfortable in the saddle for 3+ hrs is key.  Getting a proper bike fit will probably add some additional speed and ensure you have some gas left for the run.  When training last year, I could never ride past 2 and 1/2 hrs without discomfort.  Once I got bike fit, I never had that issue again.  Hope this helps

What other NYS tris are you doing?

Me:

So I finally got off the trainer and did my long ride outdoors. What a huge difference. My bike was in the shop so I had been using my GF's on the trainer. But seriously, riding outdoors was way easier than riding on the trainer. I was riding faster, was more efficient, and felt less fatigued. I was still a little sore in the saddle, but I felt much more comfortable than in the past. I'm finding the most comfortable position for me, is more forward in the aero position, with my weight on my elbows and my bottom just barely resting on the tip of the saddle. Occasionally, I'll slip completely back into the saddle just for a position change. I feel much more confident after doing that ride and im sure with more training I'll see alot of improvement!

My husband and I gave each other indoor trainers for Christmas a few years ago and it was honest to God the best investment we've made at such a low cost (the other being trading in mountain bikes for our road bikes!)

I've signed up for this race and I'm so excited to be doing it with a bunch of friends.  This will be my first long distance race (done a sprint and olympic last year).  I'm not super competitive in anything; just want to finish and for that I will be proud.  The thing I enjoy most about this whole thing is the training with my friends (I've made some of my closest friends through triathlons)  and the accomplishment of doing something that a couple of years ago I never thought I could possibly do!  I hope to maybe meet some of you there at this race I'm gonna just try to soak it all in.  Who knows maybe next year a full IM!?

I am finally officially signed up for the race! I was even able to use the coupon for the race that someone posted earlier. Glad I have already set my training for this event. We are planning on getting to Syracuse on Friday and leaving on Monday, since we are driving from Cincinnati. Really excited as this will be my firm HIM.

Hey Wittycitygirl,

How cold is the water around that time of year? Trying to decide if I should get a john or full wetsuit. Ideally, I'd like to get a john, since I live in NC and the water is usually more on the warm side if it's a wetsuit legal race. Thanks!

Also, can anyone tell me how to get a championchip? Do they give those out? I can't seem to find an actual place that sells it. Thanks all

I have a question about transition area. I have only done local Sprint's where it basically is a first come first serve as to the location. At larger races like this is it the same or are we given specific locations based on race number etc?

You will be given a specific rack on which you can rack your bike and it's based on bib #.  So a rack will have a range of numbers (for example, 500 - 549; and the next rack will have 550-599).  Once you've located your rack, then it's first come first served, meaning you should try and get the best location on the rack.

I am looking to book my hotel and  was wondering if anyone who knows the area could give me a hand here.

Any hotel suggestion close by the start or finish line where I could stay for the week end? On their web site they suggest the Maplewood Inn, the Comfort Inn and the Holliday Inn. Which one is closer, and if you ever stayed in one of those how are they?

Thank you in advance.

I don't live in the area, but just booked my hotel (Maplewood Inn).  I looks like all 3 hotels are roughly 10 miles or so from the start.

I'd go with the john. I did Keuka one year when the water was 62* and I got overheated towards the end with full sleeves...and that was JUNE!  Over the summer it should be in the mid 70s, I'd say.  You'll be fine. =)

I notice this evening a redesigned Syracuse 70.3 Ironman website.
More importantly I had saved the ride map a few months back and noticed the map up there now is a slightly different course. Basically the route south out of the park different to get to 80 and the big southern loop. FYI incase anyone else out there is riding the old map.

I didn't see a new elevation profile. Does the new route change the amount of climbing? I was waiting to register because of some schedule issues, but the number of people registered seems like it should be soon ready to close. Does anyone know how many spots remain available?

From what I've heard there is about 500 feet more climbing with one short, but steep hill right in the beginning. It's really not a fun hill. I see some hill repeats in my future . . . .

I rode the course for the first time this morning. I'm new to this sport but have mtb and bmx for ever. The course is generally fun and not too difficult. There were 2 serious climbs, not long but steep. The first is about 4.5 miles into the ride on bush road. The other was on route 80 around mile 40. Steep enough that I had to hike it. Feeling I might want a cassette with a smaller gear for them. The rest of the ride was great. The downhill after mile 50 or 52, near the end, is steep and is a small inbetween road, and it hsa a few sharp turns while you are cruising. Not the best choice I think. I braked down it. If a car was coming the other way that would be interesting doing 40mph. My garmin forerunner 305 had 3400 feet of climbing. FYI.

My ride had perfect weather today. SUnny, 50-60s and little wind. I would think that most of the ride would not have huge impacts from the wind. Much is north south and there are big hills on either side of road, you are in valleys. Few spots you are exposed on hill tops, but mostly not.

Took me 3:30 when I've been riding 56 closer to 3:15 where I live. A few side roads are not marked well, they are, but I had to slow down and made a wrong turn once. After a few more rides on it I would think this would be better for me.

I'm with you about Quassy. Flatted first time ever in a race. Hit rut in road blew back tire, front seemed ok. After getting it fixed and heading out found slow leak in front. Nursed it until it wouldn't hold any air. Had only one tublar tire with me, so walked until SAG vehicle found me and gave me a wheel. Lost good 1.5 hours on my bike.

So, I too am looking forward to Syracuse for redemption myself!
