It snowed about 20 inches here on Saturday.  Saturday and Sunday were spent digging out, so I guess that was my workout.  Hope to get out today.

Kona was pre-empted by endless snow coverage.  Argh!

I will be going for a run tonight 2-3 miles again, did this on friday and hurt pretty good yesterday. At 5'6 210 lbs, i got the belly in the front alittle lol. I am not all fat as I can bench 300 lbs, but this weight is definitely hurting the knees.

Nice. I swam my best 100 this morning which I was embarrased to post, but will out of solidarity: 1:45. I'm just learning to freestyle, very empowering.

Tried to post a few hours ago, but it got swallowed up - goals this week are gym 3x, and 300m swims to start the workouts. Anybody else got workout goals this week?

I think our Sensei, jszat, sums it up best at his FB page, DJ -

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=58352772412

"...a group of tri-folk who adhere to the principles of the all knowing Donkey in training and racing. The Donkai welcome all levels of talent (or lack thereof) and champion a sense of community and support for others in the pace. Whether its tris, cycling, running or other endurance events, The Donkai keep it stubborn and steady. EEEEEAAAWWWWWW!!!!"

To the mentees - DJ has a lot of knowledge and learned a lot in the last couple of years doing IM Moo.  Plus, as a plug, check out "The Distance: A Triathlete's Journey", by our very own BTer, Rich Ratay, which features DJ - http://www.distancedvd.com/

Uh...what is slow about that?  My average 100 (in a 1000yd workout) is 2min or so.  I have never gone all out in a 100 to see how hard I could go, but I think that time is one to be stoked on!  Great job!

My goal is to swim 1000yds tomorrow, get a bike in on Wed. and a run in on Thursday.  That way I can spend time with the family on Christmas day.

Looks like some awesome work went on yesterday!!!!  one thing i must say tho is not to get caught up in what is "fast".  "fast" is a relative term.  for instance, if i am able to run a 10:00 mile and then train and end up running a 9:30 mile am i not FASTer???  that is what is so great about this sport (in my opinion) is yes it is a race but do you really know where you are at placewise in the race?  not with all the wave starts and all that good stuff, so the "race" becomes you vs. the clock...............so fast is a relative term compared to what you are/were able to do prior.........

Just because I can break a minute in the 100 fly or free right now, doesnt mean im fast. Trust me, there are 14 year old girls that I coach that can beat me. Fast is VERY relative and as long as its fast for you, thats all that matters. I quit powerlifting a couple years ago, I just lift now because my big shoulders keep my big gut inline lol. I will switch over to alot less weight and more reps through the winter and keep with my P90x probably. I wasnt ever really doing powerlifting, although it could be considered that I guess. I was repping 225 8 times, stuff like that, but like i said i liked they way it made my shoulders and back look. But to be honest, I would give up big shoulders and back to be thin(140-150ish). I was 150 in high school, and that was only 7 years ago. My heighest weight was 240 in college when I was done with swimming my senior year. Nothing but pizza and beer and NO working out. I figured I had swam for 16 years straight, it was time for a break. Packed on 45 lbs in 3 months, man did i look BAD

Here is my "resume" (for lack of a better word), let me know if you have questions or comments.  Looking forward to the off-season training and the Mentor Program.

NAME:  53epilot, Eric

STORY:  38 years old, married, father of two great boys (7 and 3).  I have been active most of my life and spent 10 years in the Marine Corps where I was forced to be active.  Ran my first triathlon in 2002 (with a borrowed bike and helmet) and have been hooked ever since.  I have averaged about 3 Triathlons a year for the past 6 years.  The occasional deployment kept me from training regularly when I was in the Marine Corps, but the last 4 years since I have left the Marines, I have been training regularly.  I have had some injuries over the past couple of years that have kept me from maximizing my training, shin splints and tendinitis are the big two.  My 2009 race plan was for 4-5 races but it was cut short due to shin splints in August.  I compete against myself (beat my goals and times) and don’t really worry about where I finish in the M 35-39 year old AG.  I run to beat myself first and anyone who is two steps ahead of my after that.  As long as I improve my times, I am happy.

CURRENT TRAINING:  I have taken the past 2-3 months off to let my injuries heal a little and really need to get back at it.  I am trying to get an “off-season” workout going with weights, cardio (running and elliptical), swimming, and the dreaded trainer.  I hope to do weights x 3, cardio x 3, swim x 2, and trainer x 1 per week and keep this up until March/April then use an Olympic training plan.

2009 RACES:

-Tri Del Sol, Michigan

-Indianapolis Triathlon Series – 500m/10 mile/5K

2010 GOALS:

-Beat 2009 Tri Del Sol race time by 10%

-Drop 10lbs

-Run my first Olympic Distance Triathlon

-Run my first ½ Marathon

WEIGHT LOSS GOALS:  My recent hiatus from training has led to some weight gain, go figure.  I am about 10lbs above where I would like to be, so I need to get down to around 162 lbs.  I would love to be between 155-160 lbs during the race season and see what it really feels like to do run endurance events at a good weight.  It might even help my nagging injuries to reduce my weight to below 160 lbs.

CHALLENGES:  Balancing family life, training, and a job that has seen some layoffs (stress is definitely up there when you have seen 60% of your co-workers get laid off).  In order for me to get a workout in I have to get up at 5:00 am everyday.  If I don’t get up early, I don’t workout, there just is not enough time at the end of the day.  Injuries:  Not going out too fast and too strong early in the training plan/season so I don’t get injured again.  Shin splints are my enemy and I will conquer them.

PLANNED 2010 RACES:

-4/25/10:  Purdue GrandPrix Triathlon (.25 mile /10 miles /3.1 miles)

-6/20/10:  Indianapolis Sprint Triathlon Series (500 meters/10 mile/ 5K)

- 7/17/10:  Tri Del Sol (.5 mile/18 miles/4.5 miles)

-8/16/10:  Tri-Indy Olympic (1.5K/40K/10K)

Or

-9/11/10:  Purdue Boilerman Olympic (1.5K/40K/10K)

-10/17/10:  Indianapolis ½ Marathon

2011 GOALS:

-Run my first Ironman 70.3 or Half-Iron Distance Triathlon

WHY A MENTOR GROUP:

I participated in a mentor group last spring and it worked really well.  It is great to have people that I have never met before, but I have a common interest in triathlon with, to hold me accountable to my training plan and goals.  I usually post my weekly plan under the short term goals of my training log, so all of you can view what I am supposed to do vs what I have actually done.  I also found that the mentor group is a great source of information on training tips, recipes, etc.  I will do my best to hold each of you accountable and help you along your journey to your goals.

Eric

For my running friends...

I pulled the 20 week Half Marry training plan from this site, but have to scrap it.  It calls for 6 runs per week for 20 weeks, that does not jive with family and work.  I did a little digging and found this 1/2 Marry plan from runners world, 10 weeks, 3 runs per week, very manageable.  Would anyone be able to take a peek at this and let me know your thoughts? Here is a link to the plan...  http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-244--9369-1-1X2X3X4X5X6X7-8,00.html

Is it spring yet?  Did 5 miles on the treadmill today, I really HATE the treadmill!!!  Dave, how you did 60 laps on an indoor track is beyond me, monotony is a buzzkill for me.  More power to you!

No work out plans in sight this week wvwn though they are needed due to too much eating. Drove the family from VA to Colorado Springs this past weekend and it is snowing today so I can't run. It is also very hilly and I don't think my calves can take it. Like many i am recovering from injuries incurred racing and training in 09. I blew out my L calf midway through the season and just as it was healing I crashed my bike during my last sprint race in Oct. My shoulder is still sore so I am not swimming, my wrist is still sore also and I am taking in the running very slowly to build back without re-injury. I ran (with no walking) my first 5k distance since that last race this past week and it was 26:57. I was running it in under 24:00 before all the injuries.

As far a holiday plans, we are spending Christmas with our best friends who are just finishing up their final tour in the USAF. We went up to Pike's Peak yesterday on the cog train and it was just awe inspiring. Christmas eve were are going to a service at the AF Acadamy chapel. We also hope to go up to the slopes and go snow tubing. Maybe I can count that activity as a workout. Driving back to Virginia over the weekend and then back to work.

Merry Christmas to all.

Heh. Had a great workout this morning with really inspiring swimming (just starting to get it right.) Two days off, back to work on Saturday morning, likely early so as to keep family time intact.

Looking over BT training plans, wondering which is best. Aiming for my first sprint in February, followed by another sprint or two this summer - and an Olympic in September. I'm guessing I should train for the first sprint rather than incorporating the sprints into the Olympic training?

Training-plan wise, I'm wondering which to go with. I'm just getting my freestyle right, and I've never biked competitively - although I average 21-23 mph for 10-20 mile distances on trainers. I ran a half marathon this past summer in 2:02 (#3, with one full several years ago.) I'm 5"11' 217 lbs (gained 8 in the past few weeks of not-training)

This is the one I'm looking at, any ideas?

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/training-plans-view.asp?day=2&planid=18

Any help much appreciated!

Hey, we are at the bottom of the list, I could hardly find our Mentor Group.   We can't have that.

I hope that everyone is enjoying the Christmas season.  I am enjoying it right now, but I know that I will pay for it in a couple of days in the gym.  I am trying very hard not to eat all the nuts and cookies, but they are so good.

Randall, I incorporated my sprints into my Olympic training plan.  I did not look at the one you had picked out, but the one that I used for (20 week balanced Olmpic) worked pretty good with incorporating the Sprints into the Brick workouts that the plan called for.  The sprints are not too long and can count for a brick or long bike workout, just take an extra easy day afterwards so you give you body some rest.

Gotta run and eat followed by Church and then bed for the boys.  They are getting really excited about tomorrow morning.  It will be the first "real" Christmas for the 3 year old, where he actually knows what is going on.

Take care and Merry Christmas.

Got a bike and run in today....now bring on the cookies!    Actually, that was my first brick since my 2nd sprint tri last Sept.  It took about 2/3 of a mile to get the lead feeling out of my legs on the run.  Over time will I be able to run faster after the bike?  It always feels like I am running through sludge.  Ugh!

Church with the family tonight.  Then up all night wrapping Santa presents.  My kids are too (12 & 14) old to believe in Santa anymore, but it is so fun to keep pretending.
