Baowolf - 2010-01-06 10:24 AM I have only been swimming once a week with the marathon coming up in 2 weeks, but do vary the speed.  I am swimming in a swim spa and need to callabrate the speed settings into mph or minutes per 100 by renting a flowmeter.  With the insane amount of money we spent on Christmas that may be a few months.  In any case my once a week workout looks like this.

WU 500 at speed 50
6x 100 at 60 RI 15
2:00 at 50
6x 150 at 55
6x 30 at 65
CD 500 at 55

I didn't have any way to record my swim, but I did get an Ipod at Christmas which I guess can record stuff, not sure what quality.  I will just have to try to get my wife to record it for me.  Sweety, I need you to videotape me doing something so I can post it on the web for others to critique my form......

At the momment I will probably have to gain some endurance back before I can build much speed.  Once a week just is not enough to have any umphta.

What a great Idea; videotape and post to web for critique of form..... Know if I can get my husband to do it?!

Baowolf, you're swimming more than I am!  I should be swimming too but when it's cold out I have a hard time going to the Y to swim because everone else goes and swims there.  Our Y only has 3 large lanes but it's indoors and it's a PITA to swim when it's crowded.

My swimming hope lies with the Y swim director/coach.  He's 25, 2 years out of D1 swimming (long distances) and last year was his 1st year doing tri's.  He's promised to help me out when I'm ready, pretty much guaranteed that I can do 500 yards at 1:30 pace by June's race day if I do the work.  You should see this guy swim.  This past fall at the local Oly race (his first Oly) he was out of the water 4 min ahead of the next person AND he mistook the first turn buoy and had to go back, which he estimated was an extra 100 yards.

I went and got a sports massage today for my calf injury, I'm so relaxed right now I could lay down and sleep!  MT says my left leg has a lot of scar tissue from past hammy/calf pulls and that my recent calf injury feels healed and should be ready to go.  I'm hoping to go out tonight and brave a neighborhood run in the cold temps. Actually had to scrap frost off my car this morning, I didn't move to FL for this people!!!

I'm just now catching up and reading everyone's posts. I have been swimming very consistently for about 5 months, but slacking on running and cycling. So, this week I want to get back into a regular training schedule.

Mon - master's swim - DONE
Tue - 26 min run - DONE
Wed - master's swim - DONE
Thu - 30 min bike
Fri - 34 min run
Sat - 45 min bike
Sun - 42 min run

So far so good...now I just need to keep it up!

Hehe, I would pay some $$ to be able to swim 1:30/100 for any decent distance.

Last year I was driving 100 miles each way to get to the closest pool 2x per week.  They do have a masters swim class at like 5am or some such which means I would have to leave home around 2:45 am and then be 15 minutes late for work.... if the roads are clear and chains aren't required.

I walked through snow to get my last ows in in the fall of 2008.  So ya access has been an issue and well, finding a decent coach..... would be involved at best.

So mile repeats for me today... even though I only had to do 3 of them, they still kick my butt.  Running is probably my best sport.  I went from 10:20 ish pace in 2008 for all miles run to 8:37 in 2009 for all miles run and I don't want to talk about 2007 8).

Masters swim classes are offered at many pools, is basically old person ... er adult competative ish swim lessons for groups of folks.  It is for folks who want to get fast, not so much for folks who are just learning to swim.  They have a coach there, drills, workout sets, etc.

SurprisedSurprisedSurprised LOL!!! I guess I am old!

It's a lot of fun. Our group is about half ex-competitive swimmers and half triathletes, with some carry-over between the two. I got so bored swimming alone, but LOVE having set workouts, a coach, and other swimmers, like I used to back in the day!

Hoping for warmer weather today Don!

Sounds like everybody is doing great!  I started the day with a fantastic spinnervals workout - gotta swim scheduled at lunch.   I actually have partners to swim with today so that always makes it better!

I was going to take the day off because of a sick daughter, but school was cancelled today because the roads are a little icy (Hooray!).  I'm hoping they clear up enough for me to get down to the gym for a swim.  I made it through my run yesterday but felt pretty beat down.  I didn't quit, though, so I'm chalking it up as a victory!  I'm feeling pretty good today, I'm just hoping my little girl doesn't need to go into the doctor.

Grats on making it through the run.

Wow you live somewhere where they cancel school just for a little ice on the roads? Often we can iceskate to work.

Hope your little one is feeling better soon and that you don't get it as well.  Children can be soo giving about certain things.

I hear you on the run.  I am still acclimating to altitude so that 7 mile run with mile repeats was fun yesterday.  I am looking forward to tapering... er I guess I already am.  I guess running 3x mile repeats on a 7 mile run versus 8x mile repeats on a 12 mile run is taperish.   Just a short swim planned for me today.  And then my long(er) run is only 10 miles on Sunday (instead of 16-20) so I will be done before dark.

Marathon is a week from Sunday, almost time to start figuring out when I need to be where.

Don I had calf issues last year.  I found doing calf stretches 2-3 times a day for 30 seconds ish has helped.  Also, do you have a marathon stick or foam rollers to workout the knots in your calves?  They do wonders, they hurt soo good.  When I use mine my wife looks at me all concerned.... you ok over there dear?  Ya hun just steamrolling the muscle knots in my legs.  Probably not as much fun as a massaage, but less expensive and you can use it daily as needed.

HELP!!!

My hips are really brothering me on my runs.  I had a baby 6 months ago and they bothered me when I first started running and I thought I was past this but as I add mileage they are really start to hurt/ach again.  This is new to me, I've ran a lot of marathons and half marathons pior to my son and they never bothered me this much this is crazy.  How long after a baby should I be totally back to normal?

I Loooove the stick - it's soooo good for the tight calves!

This is the time of year that most of us are fighting our way back on the run (uh, and the bike and the swim) : )  This too will come . . .

Angie - where in your hips is it hurting?

I've been thinking about getting the stick. Do you use it preventatively or to work on sore muscles? I have a foam roller that I sometimes use. Does it give a better effect than that?

Kati it's front outside of each hip and it only hurts toward the end of my run...

Also I don't feel like I'm progressing in my run.  I ran a 10k on thanksgiving without the stroller and felt Great but then the holiday's came and I slacked of on my running.  I was running about a 8 minute mile and know I can hardly get a 10 minute mile.... blah so frustrating.

Hey slacker! Wink (I'm one to talk!)

Ah hip area, what are you doing for stretching?  Last but not least a massage does wonders!

For hips/ITB my wife and I do the following:
AKA Yoga Pigeon Pose

On this one below, there is a variation where you gently pull/push the knee of the leg that crosses in front towards the opposite shoulder to get the glutes if they're tight too.

This one doesn't do much for me but does for my wife:

Flexors: I have to do these.

I incorp this as an exercise sometimes too, down, up, down, up...:

Thanks for the hip stretches! I had a lot of hip problems this too with running and had to cancel many a race. They are still tight, but doing better. I'll incorporate some of those into my usual stretching!

I had a good workout today. I realized last time I was in the pool that I don't really know how to swim, only how to avoid drowning. Last night I watched a bunch of youtube videos on freestyle instructions and I learned A LOT. I concentrated on form all day and I was amazed by the results! I did an extra 100 yds because I kept wanting to improve my form. So far, I have decided that I am SUPER inefficient in the water and it's going to take a lot of work to get myself swimming with a little less effort. I seem to only be able to swim all out. I think my mind is panicking and keeps telling me to "Kick Faster!" or "Pull Harder!" I'm sure it will come with time. Tomorrow is an off day. I need it!

Can you send me some links to the swim videos.  Anyother suggestions would be appreciated too! I have yet to ventre into swim training since I am first focusing on my running but I am planning on starting within the next few weeks.

Mommyintraining - 2010-01-07 5:57 PM Thanks for the hip stretchs, I have been stretching but probably not anything that was stretching the hip area.

Sounds like IT band and / or hip flexor & the stretched Don put up are WONDERFUL.  Having a baby changes your pelvis in all kinds of fun ways.  For a lot of folks hip flexor problems hurt in their knees but I have foundfor myself and a lot of others I trian, especially in moms, it plays out in the hip.  Go to my album under pics and I have one more stretch there that I love, love, love.  I can't get it to load right now and have lost my patience for all things technical for tonight!

Josh - I love my days off - especailly after a good week of training - enjoy it!!  The swimming will come, lots and lots of drills and form focus will pay off in the long run.  I would echo what I said before, had someone video your swimming so you can see what you do versus what those folks in the other videos are doing.  Often there is a difference between what people percieve their body to be doing and what it is actually doing.  My husband did my video today, eek.  Even after years and years of swimming there is still work to do!
