I would like just to state for the record that ALL the Ohio BT guys are Pace Booty worthy.  You are all are delightful, strong, handsome and intelligent men.  It is an honor to know and to train by each and every one of you.

D- my husband is in the military and I've only seen him once a month for the past year.  Makes a girl appreciate the scenery around her.  He's coming home for good in February.  Sure will be nice to have my own cheering section at races!

K - I love it- Pace Booty- I will keep that in mind. Thanks to your husband for serving in the military, my father is a retired Marine Corps officer so I am no stranger to the military lifestyle and time away from family. You are a strong chick to handle all of that. I'm so happy for you that he will be home in February for good I'm really excited about meeting all of you at the MU Tri.

David - you are crazy but  I think you are right about what I have done to myself and sadly it is already happening  - I am skipping a trip to the in-laws next month so I can run in the Frostbite 5 miler race - and yes the eye rolls from the husband are already happening - sigh.

Brue - "If you give a mouse a cookie" is a great book - one of my kid's favorites - maybe it does inform our mental states' now that I think about it.

Kate, I'll be nice for you to have David (yest another David) home, I'm sure.

Newbz, My run's gonna suck at MU this year. I think I've run about 10-12 miles total so far this year. I have my first PT session for my knee tomorrow, I hope the therapist can figure it out and get me back running soon.

What happened to your P3?

Davids Galore - at least I won't have to worry about calling any of you by the wrong name - It sounds like I will have at least a 75% chance of getting one's name right if I just say "David" - I like that, it keeps it simple for me

As far as training goes - I am most worried about the bike piece - mostly because I don't at this current moment have a bike so I am substituting Spin Classes for the bike training until I can figure out the bike thing. I am hoping to have some kind of bike (what it will be at this point, I'm not sure - I just hope it isn't one with a banana seat and spokes in the wheels ha ha ha) by the end of February so I will have at least 6 weeks to train on it. Run and swim I think I am doing alright with - would like to cut down my run times a bit. When I registered it asked for the estimate of how long it would take me to finish, I guesstimated 1:55, but I have know idea if that is right - goal maybe to do it in that time or less? Whatever.

David good luck with PT tomorrow, I'll keep my fingers crossed that your PT has magic hands (I realize that statement could be interpreted in an inappropriate way, but I am saying it anyway). Hope it goes well.

And as long as we are dishing out names, Diamond is my last name and you all are welcome to call me that or if you want to follow suit with everyone else I go by "D.J."

Also, DJ, SPIN classes are perfect for this time of year. As far as the bike piece goes that's all I've been doing for a few months. I think I've been on my roadie 2x since December 1st and on my tri bike not at all since November 7th.

But yes, do let us know what you're looking at before you buy a bike. Now is a good time to look too, the bike sales people are hungry and there are deals to be had.

Ahh thanks David and David - I have not really a clue about what I am looking for other then I know that I want a Road Bike, I have no idea about brand etc. Just a road bike. I know that I need to go check some out and figure out size - I am 5'6" but unfortunately most of that 5'6" is NOT legs (ha ha ha). A bunch of you suggested going to wheelie fun but I haven't made it there yet, in part, because I am nervous about price. I probably really only have $200-300 to spend, so with that, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

At that price point you would probably be better off looking used, or checking out sporty mama bikes (online only). My dad and i have ordered 3 bikes through there now and have been very happy.

You would probably want a 50 or 51cm road bike if you are 5'6'' and if the legs are shorter that would proabably actually fit well.

I bought my first road bike ( I used it for 3 years until last year) used off of ebay for 200$. My helmet and a pair of bike shorts added another 60$ to my bill. After my first year I added clip on aero bars and clip in pedals and cycling shoes - another 120$. I would let you borrow my bike but is almost too large for me, a veritable giant at 5'11.

You best bet is to borrow (I do have a lady sized quasi mountain bike / commuter bike that my wife never uses (she has her own road bike) just sitting in my garage- you are welcome to it - wont be super speedy but it is free)
Another option is buying a 50/52 cm frame used and building a bike. A guy from the ORRRC built my current bike and he has lots of spare parts and essentially builds the bike for cost of componets. That might run you 200-300 total depending on the price of the frame, etc

Another option is buying used. The craigslist in dayton and cincy has some bikes pop up from time to time in that price range. I will keep an eye out.

Wheelie fun is a neat store and you can learn alot about bikes but you will not escape from there with a road bike for less than 800-900 bucks. Best find a solution that lets you race and see if you like it for a year or two before you decide to spend all your beer money on a bike.

I would love to borrow the bike collecting dust in your garage for a bit (although I would recommend you clear that with Mrs. Bananatoes) until I can figure out what the heck I am doing - because as you so aptly put it - I wouldn't want to blow all my beer money on a bike, especially not knowing much about what I want in a bike. Free is one of my favoriate words. I am not opposed to buying a used bike and have been trying to keep an eye on Craigs List but given that I don't know what I want or am looking for that has made it kind of challenging nor would I be opposed to buying a used frame and doing a build with the guy from ORRRC but again that still leaves the problem of not knowing what I want/need. I know you said that we are geographically close so perhaps when the weather breaks a bit (and you have cleared the loan with Mrs. Bananatoes) we could arrange to meet. Of course this is all predicated on the fact that you are not a decrepit 34 year-old axe murderer

David - Ummm Beer...I can't decide if I want to go run or have a beer, run or beer, run or beer, I don't know...Mr. Sam Adams and the Beautiful Blue Moon may win out over the run, I went to Spin Class this morning and swam already...

Ok, so as a Miami alum, here's what I want to know:

Where the heck does this bike course go that has a hill so bad that people walk up it?!

I know southwest Ohio is hilly, but I honestly can't think of any hill in the Oxford area that would be *that* bad. Ok, *maybe* the one coming up 27 into town? Even that's pretty short, though. Maybe I'm just biased, riding out here in the Rockies!

One of these years, I really want to get back to Oxford for this race. Triathlon wasn't even remotely on my radar when I was in school. I don't think I even knew there WAS a triathlon!

Correct me if I'm wrong- but I think there is a short one at Stillwell-Beckett and another on Riggs before Imoff Rd. The one on stillwell comes with little warning, as you turn a sharp curve and start climbing. The one on Imhoff you go down a pretty big downhill before you have go so up again.

have you ever been up flagstaff in boulder?
if so you know what hte first half mile of that is like? the part from chataqua park up to the first pull off. its like that, only you hit it after two 90 degree turns in a few hundred yards so you have lost all speed.

personally i dont think its that the hill on its own is that bad, its that you hit a very steep (not long) hill within a few min of coming out of the swim and you already have your HR sky high from the swim.

Ok, that makes sense. I was seriously scratching my head trying to figure it out! I looked up the race site and took a look at the course map, and I honestly don't think that I ever went that way out of Oxford. I would LOVE that run, though! I lived on South Quad freshman year (and again, was NOT a runner at the time) and had a ton of classes in Phillips Hall...it would be so cool to run through the areas I walked through every day.

And on another note...OMG. This race is ridiculously cheap! $40?! Are you kidding me?! That would almost be worth the plane ticket and the fees to ship my bike! :-p

For someone who is new to the bike and eating a Gu while peddling is still a challenge the combo of tight curves going into the hills was challenging.  Slowing down to make the turns or end up in the cow pasture...Hmmmm...hard choice for me!  Would rather not get too up close and personal with the Moos!

glucose gel - a form of calories for mid race feeding

GU is a brand name of glucose gel - and it looks and tastes the same as you would expect Goo to look and taste. Not sure if you are a big fan of gelatinous gloopy food products. They come in many colors and some say many flavors (if you consider crap a flavor)

Thanks for the education about GU, since you make it sound so appetizing I'll be sure to go out and buy a year's supply. In fact, I think I will stop eating all regular food and will convert to a GU only diet. Nothing like crap for breakfast lunch and dinner.
