My first swim in the lake was awesome!! My time doesn't show it as I swam a tad off course at times, but the water was perfect....smooth as glass.

I did however feel a tad warm in my L/S so I may just do sleeveless next time.

There were TONS of people out there....

Good times!!

OK, I've seen the 1/4 and 1/2 mile markers but what is considered the start?  I timed myself running and the 1/4 marker seems further than that from the waterline.  Or is it from the ladder or something?  Sorry if this was covered.  The distance from 1/4 to 1/2 seems right though.

i concur...my longsleeve wetsuit was WAY too hot.  I should have worn my shorty but who knew?  I know Racine water temp has to be at least 10 deg colder because of the depth at racine.  I can't believe how shallow Ohio street beach area has gotten over the years!  That's crazy!  In the mid 90's the lake was just inches below the bike path and now you can walk all the way to the 1/4 mile mark and further.

we ended up swimming about 45-50 min...1.5 miles (out to the 1/2 mi mark then back out to the 1/4 mi mark) then ran up to addison and back.

what an amazing day...it was gorgeous out and great heat trng on the run for racine.

wish i bumped into some of you but we went down kinda late...started swimming around 9ish.  maybe next time or on a weekend we do another course ride.

I was out there saturday morning as well. Great day!! I swam from beach to beach in about 50 minutes. Water was great. I have a long sleeve suit as well. It was a bit warm but not too uncomfortable for me. Lots of folks out there.

It's allegedly from the ladder.

I got out there finally and got in a half-mile. I can't believe at this time last year I doubled or tripled and occasionally quadrupled that every other day. I am going tomorrow (tuesday) with the CTC group I think. After months off, swimming doesn't suck.

Any protocol with the guards or area to stay in swimming if leaving from Ohio Street beach?  I used to guard up on the North Shore and swimmer were supposed to stay within certain areas.  Do you just suit up at the Ohio St. beach and go?

just don't swim to the east of the no wake buoys...it makes the guards extremely nervous.  boat to swimmer contact is typically unhealthy.

also, if you swim outside the guard boats at oak street beach (even if swimming from Ohio and you swim past the curve to get there) you'll make the guards nervous too because they know other swimmers (usually smaller kids) will see you out there and then the kids might want to swim past them when they see you; which causes a swimmer control problem with them.

irrespective of this, lifeguards tend to leave anyone with a wetsuit alone to swim with no issue.

Just swim out to the red buoy, go around it, and come back. You can't really screw that up.

FYI Chicago Endurance Sports is having their first OWS at Ohio at 6:30pm.  150 people signed up for the group.  Average attendance has been 70 for the past two weeks pool swims...

Also, their newsletter said water temp was 72 yesterday... after storms it's now 62

If I may ask...did you wear a sleeveless or long sleeve in there?

Going down in the morning and last time, I felt a tad warm in the long sleeve.

Not sure how it's changed in a week though???

Thanks!

It was 66 when we got in.  I wore a sleeveless and was perfect.  I get extremely hot REALLY easy, though.

It's 68 right now.

djfii, are you going to the cycling practice tomorrow?  Not so happy about the time it's gonna take to get there, but I'm guessing it will be worth it!

For Ohio beach, I have had good luck parking on Ohio St just east of Mc Clurg Ct. It is no parking until 6:30pm so if you arrive around 6:25pm you should have plenty of (metered) spots to choose from. It is really convenient to the beach underpass too.

I went this morning for the first time at Ohio St. and it felt a little cool.  I was happy with sleeves.  Awesome to get out in the lake though.  Water seemed pretty clear.  Great way to start the day.

Anybody planning on swimming there tommorrow. Im planning on being down there by 7 with a run after. If I find street parking do I have to be out by a certain time. Last year I just bit the bullet and paid the 20$ to park in the lot.

For tomorrow, I would advise being gone by about 9am. Tomorrow is the inaugural "Beachathon" race. It starts at 9 at North Ave beach and then comes down to Ohio - they will have obstacles on and the course running through the beach. So it might create some headaches down there. I'm thinking about coming down there for a swim around 7 and then riding up to North ave to watch my girl friend do the race.

If the rain holds off I'll be there to swim for sure then maybe bike or run (depends on how the knee is feeling)  I'll be there by 6:45 or 7am.  If you get there at 7 you should have no problem getting street parking and you should be able to pay for a few hours worth.

Yes, I'll be there! I live in Highland Park so it's actually an ideal location for me on a Saturday.

I wore a long sleeve. I was fine temp wise. As always, it was a bit chilly getting in but it got comfortable pretty quickly.

I put it off this morning too because of the storms and the beachathon race. I hope to be there tomorrow morning...if I don't accidentally sleep in too long
