Do any of you swim here?  I'm just wondering what you do about getting there.  I can take my bike, but then again, I really don't like to lock it up anywhere.  Or is there some parking nearby?  I really want to get in some OWS there.  Thanks!

If you get there early enough there is street parking available. Lots of people ride their bikes though. Last summer I was there almost every weekend. I got there between 6:30 and 7:00 and never had a problem finding parking.

I swam there for 2 years. I usually go in the morning. Check out "break through multisport." I have done the open water clinics with them.

There are bike racks. I lock my bag to my bike. I use a bag lock.

I've heard from several non-triathlete friends that it hasn't been that bad. I'll probably go next Saturday or Sunday Morning. This is the time of year I wish my wetsuit had sleeves!

Big foot will be bathwater compared to our lake...did it last year...only needed the wetsuit for buoyancy (not sure if that's spelled right) because I got warm in my sleeveless...it was however VERY choppy...and a lot of shallow water...see my race report for details...if you wish...

Thanks for letting me know...I was thinking of going Friday...

Yea I heard lake geneva is already bathwater from my aunt/uncle who were there this weekend. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to do a little open water swimming since I HATE pool swimming I get short of breath and feel horrible afterward.

I'll look up your race report. Hopefully it won't be too windy. It tends to get nasty choppy as the day goes on because of all the boats and such on the lake.

Was there today and was surprisingly nice-ish... mid/low 60s maybe? I was expecting worse...

The 1/4, and 1/2 mile markers appear to be gone though? What's with that do they take them out over the winter?

They take them out over the winter. I rode by there today and was like WTF the park district is really lazy.

When you guys go on weekdays, what times do you usually get there?

I noticed almost all swim groups go out at &:00 (or earlier) on weekends. Is it tough to swim in the afternoons due to crowds, or something?
Also, if you bike it do you just toss the wetsuit over your shoulder?
Finally, if you go solo, do you just not bring a wallet/credit card/ID (other than maybe a road ID)?

If it helps...I know the 1/4 turnaround is Chicago Ave. and the 1/2 turnaround is just before the area where the path along side it curves left (not sure that makes sense...but in my mind, it does).  Think there might be a last set of orange stairs in the area where I am referring?

Yeah the 1/2 mile is out by the stoplight before the end of the breakwall (or whatever it's called). At least that is where I decided to turn around. Hopefully they will put them back soon since my swims will be more then just the 1 mi loop and it's easier to get the right distance with them.

As far as "stuff" I try and bring minimal so I don't have to worry about theft.. I swim in Capris with a zippered pocket for ID/Transit/Money which I swim with and bring a towel and plastic bag for my wetsuit.

This is a good question, I'd like to know also.
Only time I can make it down town is with the family in tow, so I would be leaving them shopping or whatever and getting to swim at 10am or so.
Is this a bad plan for the weekends?

I like to swim early for several reasons:

1) I have the rest of my day to do other stuff (Bike, Run, mow my grass, play with my dog, take a nap, etc...)
2) A lot less boat traffic.  The area is a no wake zone, but I've been on some of those boats that party in there.  With the amount of drinking that goes on, I don't trust the people driving those boats not to do something stupid.
3) The water is usually calmer due to less wind and less boats churning it up
4) Beach is a lot less crowded early in the morning, I can ride my bike down there and not have to deal with the path being packed.
5) At 10am it won't be too bad.  At 2pm on a Saturday I probably wouldn't be swimming there.

You should just start at Oak Street and Swim to Belmont and walk home.  That is about 2.5 miles.  Straight shot and you don't have to worry about where to turn around.  Tongue out

Haha that is true.  I'm more scared of the below pictures than the chop.
