Not cutting my hair until after the Philly Marathon in November. Only a big deal because for the past 6 years I have buzzed my hair extremely short every other week or so...

I give up my drinking "solution" for a while - my workouts the next day suffer.  I also give up weight lifting, a clean house, and cut back on socializing (for some reason, most people really don't want to hear me go on and on about the intricacies of triathlon races, triathlon nutrition, triathlon clothing, traithlon statistics, triathlon strategy, etc.  It's weird).   Smile

trigal38 - 2010-08-04 12:53 PMWow - no sugar for that long!! That's hard core.
Last year was my fisrt year racing anything really. I went way crazy eating everything I could get my hands on. Smores are a great recovery food, right?
This year I am TRYING (not always successful) to "eat clean". No just for a race though, just because I felt gross from eating all of that junk.
Like the previous post I pretty much have eliminated alcohol for most of the summer. Mostly because of racing, the heat, not wanting to be dehydrated or have to deal with headaches from 1 glass of wine.

What motivates you to give something up? Just curious. I'm not good about giving stuff up, probably because I'm catholic. Lent always = quilt.
I'm not sure what motivates me to give something up...that's actually a really good question. Like someone else said...I suck at moderation-it's all or nothing with me so I guess when I'm training & feeling good I want to challenge myself to eat well too--I'm a definite sugarholic.

For a specific race I'll usually give up drinking for a couple of weeks or month leading up.  Only on races that I'm really trying to do good on though, like my first half mary, my first whole marathon, and my first triathlon.

Things I gave up when I started doing tri training include all fast food, and pretty much getting drunk. I am doing triathlons for fun, and so I can stay healthy and still eat as much as I want, I just decided that I have to burn some calories, and keep the things that I eat and drink, healthy stuff. I used to go out 3-4 sometimes 7 nights a week. Wasnt uncommon for me to drink 10 beers/drinks and go to work the next day.  Now 3 glasses of wine, or 3 beers is getting out of hand, and very rarely happens.

I feel much better nowadays

I gave up staying awake past 9 PM. Otherwise 4:30 AM comes way too early.

I'm injured right now and not training, so that's why I'm still up.

I gave up the following for triathlons:

sleep, makeup, long hair, high heels, late nights watching TV with hubby, movies (I can't stay awake), a clean house, a car that doesn't smell like a locker room, showers at home, modesty, toenails.

I gave up 40' waist pants and XXL shirts.  I never want to see them again!

Down to a 36' waist and L/XL shirts.

Oh yeah,  I gave up my old undies.  They were falling off me anyway!

It's not that I'm giving up anything, I just don't wany any of it anymore. I'm happy to go to bed early. I'm happy to eat appropriate serving-sizes of quality food (exceptions made for big days - then I'll have an entire pizza to myself if I need it). The last time I watched TV was May, and I'm good with that. I don't want alcohol because my sleep isn't as restful with it, and it takes very little to make me feel like crap the next day.

scoobysdad - 2010-08-04 12:50 PM Until someone begins paying me to do triathlons, I'm going to enjoy whatever makes me happy in sensible moderation. Including training.

Yup.

NickW - 2010-08-04 1:08 PM I gave up pretty much everything in terms of bad food and drink.  I avoid all processed food and treats and try and eat as healthy a diet as I can.  But this has been part of a long journey of weight loss and lifestyle changes for me that started quite some time ago.  And giving all that up allows me to perform at my best, maintain single digit body fat percentage 7.8% this morning (withings scale reading) and weigh only 137.5lbs at 5'7".  Its a definite choice though, and its not for everyone.  I suck at moderation so for me its either eat this way and train my *ss off, or be fat, lazy and eat bad food.  Theres not a lot of middle ground for me.

However after a big race (and I mean something like a marathon, 1/2 Iron etc) all bets are off for 24hours.  After my last marathon I ate a bacon cheeseburger with fries, 4 beers, ice cream, a 1lb bag of m+ms, and a large meat lovers pizza before tipping over and falling asleep.  I then started the trip home on the plane with a cinnabon and some evil looking cheesy egg sandwhich thing.  I can definitely say that all that stuff tastes so much better when you only eat or drink it a few times a year.

This made me laugh so hard! I have just begin my journey with a permanent lifestyle change and I am very much like you it is all or nothing and not much middle ground.

I am trying my best to eat less processed food, less sugar ect... but I sadly also had to give up alcohol for the time being. One beer or one glass a wine and for some reason the next morning I have a much harder time with my work out. So I am looking forward to my after race ice cold beer!

I don't really consciously give up anything during training.  I do like to enjoy a beer or several throughout the week and during training season that number naturally goes down because I don't want to be sluggish for my workouts.  I do generally completely give up alcohol the week preceding a race.

However, I did have a unique situation last week where I had resigned from my job, one that I had for 8 years to pursue another opportunity and there was a going away Happy Hour in my honor on my last day (on a Thursday) which happened to be 3 days before a race.  How much alcohol I was going to consume weighed heavily on my mind all throughout that week.  As it turned out I drank WAYYYYYY too much (even with lots of water mixed in) woke up Friday with quite the hangover (the kind that sends you kneeling to the toilet around 7AM or so).  So Friday was a wasted day but would have been a taper day anyway. Saturday was better but still a tad sluggish.  Sunday came and I was good to go and actually ended up having one of my better races.  So good to know for future reference.

About the only thing I gave up was sleep.  When all I did was run I could sleep in if needed because I trained alone.  I'm training with a club now and bike rides are way too early on Sat and run/OWS are way too early on Sundays.

I have been eating pretty good for the last few years so that isn't an issue.   Haven't had a drink in 17 years so can't give that up.  Oh yea, I really can't stay up late on Sat night anymore.

enjoy,
Duane

noofus - 2010-08-04 4:08 PM Wait... whats this "give up beer" thing you guys are talking about?

I dont think thats actually possible...

I said the same about sweets... reese's pb cups, chocolate milk, mint cc ice cream, cookies, all soooo good! But training I definitely find that I cut back a bit on these

So true... maybe after a big goal race I will go buy myself something unrelated to training. That's a good idea.

I'm haven't read through the massive posts on this, and I'm sure it's all been said, but I pretty much give up both hard liquor and beer for most of triathlon season, though I may ocassionally (1-2 per month) have a small glass of wine. I also tend to give up all caffeine for 2 weeks prior to any long course race (but will have a cup of coffee the morning of the race).

On a similar note, I tend to give up having free time, or a social life for much of the season...
