It seems that Sat Oct 9th with a 8:30 am meet and 9am push off may end up being the ride.

If you have any ability to help organize/mobilize the appropriate people and organizaitons, please tell me what you can help with and the ball will roll

I can call the Waukesha Co Sheriffs department and request an escort from the county line to Pewaukee.  I'll email the lieutenant tonight and let you know if they can help us.

Excellent- thank you

I want to pu together an email list, so If you can pm that to me it would be great.  We will need as much help as possible, let me knw who has what skills and connections - Let's Ride!!

At this time it has been requested we hold on the ride, but could be possible in near future to early next year.  It also was requested to not jump to any conclusions and just send positive vibes and prayers to Jeff and his family

Thank you and I will keep everyone updated on the ride.

Anyone have new news on Jeff?

A $114.00 fine.  Jeff's in pretty bad condition with who knows how much his bill is going to cost, along with Lauren's.

No justice.

It's a tragic and all to often situation, but it actually sounds like an accident. Have you never been blinded by the sun? This is one where I don't think throwing the book at the driver to set an example is the best course of action. Now, the next time a drunk/distracted driver hits a cyclist, throw the book at them.

I'm curious if you are a driver blinded by the sun (and I ask this without a note of sarcasm) and you accidentally rearend a vehicle injuring the passengers or if you are blinded by the sun and kill a construction worker on the freeway or an officer assisting along the side of the road would there likely be no citation? I really need a computrainer!

I continue to keep Jeff and his family in my thoughts.

Maybe I misread the article but I believe that it has not yet been determined whether or not the driver will be cited/charged in the accident on Friday.

The $114  fine was the "penalty" for the driver that killed the cyclist on Hwy 18 in June.

I know how you feel about the computrainer. I have old training partners who now only ride in large groups or inside on their CT or rollers.  I'm personally torn on this choice.  On one hand, I love biking the roads where I live and I couldn't have done this last IM training indoors.  But, I also know two bikers (Jeff is the second one) and one runner who have been hit in the past couple of years and its starting to cause me to reconsider things.  I honestly never thought I would.

You need to get a CX bike and hit the rail trails. Outside of group rides I almost never ride on the road. It doesn't hurt that I can piece together rail trails for rides well into the 60 and 70 mile range with less the 10 miles of that on the road riding through my town to get to the trail. It's slower then the road, but since you can get the fit very close or identical to a road bike, it counts as time in the saddle.

Re-read it. The $114 "fine" was for Friday's incident. Note I did not say "accident".

From the story:

No citations have been issued and the crash remains under investigation.

Earlier this year, Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel directed that the motorist who struck and killed Brett Netke on Highway 18 be issued a citation for failing to provide the required three-foot clearance when passing a bicyclist. The driver, Samuel Weirick, did not contest the citation and paid a $114 fine.

No citations will be issued in this until the accident reconstruction is complete.  Reconstructions can take weeks to finish (its what I do for a living).  When the reconstruction is complete, the whole case is reviewed by the DA's office and a charging decision will be made.   Don't be surprised though if they only issue the driver a citation for Driving Too Fast For Conditions....  Or something similar.

Does anyone know the latest on Jeff's condition? I just heard a very sad piece of information and I'm really hoping it's not true.

I also heard something sad about Jeff's condition but I've not been able to confirm it.  I'll wait until then and, in the meantime, keep praying for him.

E-mail that went out earlier today to all the Tri-WI peeps for those that are not part of the group or did not get it....

As many of you know, last Friday Jeff Littmann, President of the WI Bicycle Federation and owner of Attitude Sports (TriWisconsin sponsor) was severely injured when he was struck by a car while riding his bike.  This horrible incident has prompted a great deal of response from our multisport community and calls to action.

Two that end, I wish to attach two e-mails received today regarding this issue.  Many of you have seen these posted on the TriWisconsin Yahoo Group.  However, only a small percentage of TriWis members receive those e-mails, therefore, I am attaching them below.

Here is a productive email you can forward.

From Bill Ochowicz: This is a time for community to come together, not to antagonize and divide.  Take your passion, anger and energy and use our Bike Federation to affect change. Organizing independent efforts, rides, web sites, etc. is wasted resources when we have an excellent established infrastructure and programs through the Bike Fed. Pick up the phone and call the Bike Fed.

But also keep in mind right now we need to focus on Jeff and his family. We need good thoughts and positive energy.  We need time to take a deep breath and reflect. Let's do this right way and start with the Bike Fed. Because all of us cyclists, drivers, walkers, runners have beautiful roads to share and all need a little more awareness. In the mean time ride safe, and when you are in your car, and yes us cyclists who do the same momentary distracting things others do, let's keep our eyes on the road. This is a time to channel our energy in a positive way that helps us all.  The most positive person I know is Jeff.  So remember, contact Bike Fed and right now, good thoughts for Jeff, Kelly and the family. God Bless.

and:

Please email this to your contacts. Go to their web site...many opportunities for education, advocacy and other needs. This is what we can do now...we don't have to start new things.  They have the tools, but need the soldiers.

The Bike Fed needs you  Help the Bike Fed spread the Share & Be Aware message. With your support, Share & Be Aware will bring safety education to each of our 72 Wisconsin counties through community outreach, media and education. If you'd like the Bike Fed to give a presentation to your workplace, club or group, etc. Support Share & Be Aware. Together, we can make Wisconsin a better place to bicycle.

Sadly, Jeff passed away a short time ago. Jeff was a great supporter and promoter of bicycling - we lost a great person today. My thoughts are with his friends and family.

That's simply tragic.  By all accounts, Jeff was a good man and there just aren't enough of those these days.  I've not been a praying man for some time and I'm sure it's unlikely Lauren will be reading these, if you are, Lauren - you have my deepest condolences and prayers for your recovery.
