Weather here is going to be in the low 30's, with rain/snow mix for most of the week. Should be a great start to the challenge. My only problem is the high winds, 30-40 with 60 mph gusts, has killed swimming in the lake and river here. The US Coast Gaurd came out and told me to get out of the water, the waves were too big for swimming. I didn't think waves 3-4 ft were too big, I swam in bigger earlier this year.

Time for me to start checking wunderground.com's hourly forecasts to make sure I train in the worst weather possible

Supposed to be cold and snowy here Monday -- yay!!

You're going to love those!  The husband has them and hasn't had a cold foot since.  He's ridden certainly down to 0 if not colder in them.  He wear thick wool hiking socks, basically, and is great.

wgraves7582 - 2010-10-30 10:55 AM To add to the strangeness - my christmas present purchase:

https://www.performancebike.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10052&catalogId=10551&productId=1057306&summaryOnly=true

I went 2 sizes bigger so I can wear heavier socks - they say 10degrees but I bet they are warm to lower than that and I will let you all know!!!

You sure those go high enough?  I was thinking knee high at least -- or full leather biker gaiters for the slush.    Please post a pic of your snow bike too -- I'm curious!

Shoot, highs in the 50s all next week!

Actually I'd happily lose the challenge if that was the forecast all winter.

I second that!!

A little nervous... I've never trained outdoors in the winter before. I'm not a graceful ice bunny!

Ready to try though!!

When you face snow and ice, just be extra careful.  I always run for time and not distance when the pavement isn't clear, otherwise I might be out there forever.  But it is so worth it!  I have had more "favorite runs" in the winter than the summer, for sure.  I especially love the crunching underfoot.

Oh yeah! LOVE that creaky, crunchy sound of running on packed snow! And sometimes, I actually think I run faster in the winter ... but that is likely a figment of my frozen imagination.

Hi - just a quick question - looks like if it isn't 35 - you get no points?  Just trying to do it right.  I know I won't win this - heck - I'll be pretty close to bottom rung - but - maybe it will keep me training through the winter to get me ready for a half marathon in April

I have a question about the points too.  Let's say it's 33 degrees and clear and I am running 30 mins.  Since it's .5 pts for 30-35 deg, than technically speaking I would get 30 x .5 = 15 points?  And 0 points if it's warmer than 35 (and no wind or precip)?  So, if it's not warmer than 35 than no points at all for running?

Yet, if I am biking and it's say 38 degrees I get a single point:

(1 bike factor + 0 temp factor + 0 precip + 0 wind) x 40 min ride = 40

Or, is there an assumed 1 point to start with?

Or, ...?

I guess I can see the logic there, but I went into this thinking there'd be points for all outside activity. But I guess maybe not.  And that's okay, but it just occurred to me today and I wanted to make sure I understood.
