After how many in how many years, I still freak out before every tri and say to myself, `I'm going to drown.' yes... aside from the vision i get of my own death water is my only other real big fear. Despite being a competant swimmer now I learned late in life and the fear I had as a child is stil there. Not just open water either, even in the pool, if it is crowded... mass start open water tri... you'll see me swimming 20yds wider tham *everyone* else Ha I always swing out wide but it rarely works. I recall at Chicago '07 being held under by some guy who was drowning, or thought he was, while he screamed `AHHHH!' and then being elbowed in the eye, opening a nice gash. I think that's when it all started. Thankfully I composed myself and took off swimming. I debated just getting out of the water at that point, though. |

My dog has this. Just will NOT walk over them. My dog has this, too!!! Must be a dog thing. He's a pug, maybe a small dog thing? My sister has a pug that will not walk over sewer grates either. He's awfully stubborn about it, too. I will run as fast as I can from anything that has adhesive. It's completely uncontrollable. I go into survival mode and take off if someone approaches me with a sticker or a post-it or anything similar. My twin sister has the same issue although not as severe. |

Is that a rational or an irrational fear? Analysts have an expression: "The fear is the wish". It means the thing we say we fear is actually the thing we want to have happen (as in "I am scared my mother will die" really means "I wish my mother would die" - but since the wish is unacceptable, it gets expressed consciously as a fear instead). Personally, I think I am OK with Yanti taking over the world. As long as she removes the logs from the river beds. When I dive in the Cooper in South Carolina, logs are where the gators hang out. Seeing a bed of logs freaks me out, and I get very anxious. I am certain there is a gator juuuuuust beyond my flashlight, waiting for me to turn my back to grab me and eat me! |

When I was growing up, our cabin was infested with carpenter ants and every time we would go, we would have to vacuum up 100s of dead carcasses...did you know that the really big ants crunch when you step on them? Blech! Me too--the buried alive one. I'm surprised no one else posted this also. It's totally irrational, but still REALLY disturbs me to see this played out on TV/film. There was a CSI episode, and recently a movie called Buried. I was unfortunate enough to be at a movie where the preview to Buried played. I told the person I was with-- "I will NEVER see that movie". |

I have an irrational fear of the garbage disposal. I know I'm safe as long as I don't put my hand down the drain, but what if it slips? You can put your hand in it as long as it's not turned on. I used to fear the garbage disposal as well. I think it was from growing up and my mom constantly telling me not to get my hand anywhere near it or I'd lose my whole hand. This persisted until my early 20s when I installed a garbage disposal in my first house. Once I saw the insides and how it works I have no issues shoving my hand down the drain to retrieve something so long as no one is near the switch. |

Champion 4835 Eat Cheese or Die | Subject: RE: What are your IRRATIONAL fears? I've been trying to think up some irrational fears. - Needles would be the closest. But it's not a fear, it's just that I don't like watching them go in. I've gotten better with this over the years and can watch needles put into other people. I still prefer to not watch them put in me. If it's a really big needle, I prefer not to see it before hand. I think that has more to do with the anticipation, and knowing that a big needle usually means more pain. - Another borderline irrational fear was the night my wife moved my daughter's cd player onto the shelf and it was completely surrounded (both sides and on top) with stuffed animals. The kid listens to a cd of lullabies every night and then the cd player sits on all night. I tried to go to sleep but all I could think about was that it would catch fire because of a lack of ventilation and my daughter would be killed before we could get to her. I had to get up and move it back to the top of the dresser. I think that was is borderline. The chance of it catching fire is very slim, but I just couldn't shake it. Not sure why my wife thought it needed to go in the closet surrounded by animals. - I also worry about the seemingly bad trajectory out society is on and how this will impact my children's quality of life. - I worry that my wife and I will die and my daughter will be left alone at a young age. Oh, and I approve Yanti as supreme overlord. |
