Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() For those of you who have done, or are currently training for a HIM/IM distance race, what kind of training plan did you use? Any books you guys would recommend? I was looking at the Triathlete training bible and it seemed to contain a lot of info and some plans for both distances. This is technically my second year, although I didn't put a whole lot in last year and it was all self training with no training partners or training plans. I talked to a girl a few weeks ago that I went to high school with and she and her husband do tris as well. She has actually done Kona and IMKY (2x) and I am going to try to get together with them for some longer rides this summer. That was my biggest pitfall last year was boredom. I was hitting the wall trying to force myself to bike and run for any distance by myself. The only training partner I had was my dog on some runs. |

![]() GoFaster - 2010-12-22 3:51 PM My personal suggestion would be to move over to Jorge's winter cycling program - you'll find it in the challenge forum. Start with the pre-weeks and work from there. You do regular testing, plus the intensity will be based on how you do the tests. x2 I like Jorge's plan because almost all the workouts are limited to about 1 hour. But they are far from easy. I just finished marathon training, so I'm only doing the prep weeks starting this week. Looking forward to upping my FTP about 5-10 watts. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() There are several good books with training plans for HIM and IM distances. It helps to know your goals before choosing any plan. Be realistic about what you're willing to do to prepare for the distance. I have a coach who does an excellent job planning my training. When I first started triathlons all of my workouts were with other people. Now I rarely workout with anyone. Morning training starts at 4:45 and afternoon workouts start a 4. Since I use a coach all of my workouts are targeted to my training needs/recovery/goals. Right now I'm swimming with a masters program. Once IM training starts up then the training will switch back to swimming alone. There is alot to be said for training by yourself. You can learn alot about how you handle fatigue, stress, and challenges. Come race day you will be alone. No one else will be there to push or encourage you. The voices in your head telling you to stop/walk/quit are easier to deal with on race day when you've had plenty of opportunities to talk back to them during training ![]() |

So far it hasn't happened. This is probably the area that I struggle with the most. I'm normally so tired from work and training that making good choices isn't a top priority. Hi Rene. Every year I say the same thing and struggle for the same reasons. This would be soooo much easier if I had someone to do my grocery shopping & cook my meals ![]() Went out & bought Racing Weight the other day. Haven't opened it yet though. Anyone read this book? Any good? I have the same book. It is sitting on my nightstand... Yes, I would love help and suggestions in this area! |

First week of January, I am doing a base fitness test for cycling with a local coach who is running a six-week trainer class. Until then, it's just me and the Sufferfest videos. |

When starting out or in off season, it's great to train with a group. But once you start preparing for a race, I prefer to train solo more often than not. You need to dial in your desired pace and effort level...and it's rare that an entire group will have similar goals. |

![]() Got in a short 3 mile run and went to masters class after work. Masters was really easy today. I guess with Christmas coming up, our coach tried to make tonights workout fun. We did a lot of team relays...so I think we only swam about 400 yards total individually. Hopefully going to wake up early tomorrow to jump on the trainer. Still have to wrap up some Christmas gifts...why do I wait till the last minute? |

I am currently on a Gary Fisher Cronus-- Will probalbly buy a tri bike for the 2012 season so I have been looking at wheels/rims lately. I currently have Bontrager Race FCC (FCC = Fisher control column) Do you think these wheels are a good deal? http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=236458&posts=3&start=1 I also found these on e-bay-- http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Bontrager-Aeolus-5-0-ACC-700c-clincher-wheelset-NR-/280605190167?pt=Cycling_Parts_Accessories&hash=item41555f6817 http://cgi.ebay.com/09-BONTRAGER-AEOLUS-FULL-CARBON-5-0-FRONT-6-5-REAR-/180601685773?pt=Cycling_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a0cb3070d |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() The Cronus is a VERY nice ride....you might do well just to convert it to aero with bars/shifters/brakes, then get a set of wheels. I race on the velodrome, bought a pair of 88mm rims on eBay, had a friend build them up. Just as nice as the $1500 wheels for a lot less. Also take a look at this pair: http://www.planet-x-usa.com/pPC82/101/Planet-X-Pro-Carbon-82101-Tubular-Wheelset.aspx very nice wheels, plenty aero and much less than Zipp |

I bought the Angels video. Very very cool and way more engaging than Spinervals, although I still dig Coach Troy! I still haven't figured out how to do a proper over/under though. I've been using my FTP +5% and -5%. A couple people on ST say that isn't a big margin, but I noticed it and it was only a gear change to make it happen. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Catwoman - 2010-12-22 8:01 PM STORY: My background is in cycling. In 2007, I learned how to swim and entered my first triathlon. I'm still a very frustrated BOP swimmer. The good news is that I enjoy swimming. I could have written that! I took adult swim lessons two years ago because I joined a new gym that had a pool and I wanted to use it. Before that I was afraid to put my face in the water. I learned some but didn't make much progress and switched back to cycling as my focus. I was just doing a tiny bit of swimming on formerly off days. Late fall 2009 I decided that I wanted to getting into triathlon and I started working with someone on swim technique. Now I can go far but it takes a while. Working on it. I kind of view my 2008 foray into swimming as a false start since I didn't get serious about working on it until last year. Like you, I enjoy swimming. I do find it frustrating sometimes though. |

Yeah, I haven't figured it out either--looking forward to my coach-led cycling fitness test on 1/5 when I 'll be sure to ask that question. Until then, let's just say my approach to those videos will be somewhat less than scientific: my heart-rate monitor watch was swiped off my gym bag, my bike computer isn't working and I haven't done a HR test in months! But, I found that one gear change put me in what I imagine is the right ballpark. I know RPE isn't ideal, but we'll see if my husband responds to my cryptic hints that I need at heart-rate monitor for Christmas. (Ya know, subtle suggestions like, "Please get me a heart-rate monitor for Christmas.")

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I don't know anything about these specific wheels. I will say that the Mavic Kysrium SLs that I got for my road bike were probably one of my best purchases. The wheels that came with the Madone are now used on the trainer only. nakdboardr - 2010-12-23 7:21 AM I need some opinions on this? I am using plans from Triathlete Magazine's Week by Week Training Guide for both my HIM & IM. I've used plans from that book for my sprint & oly distances as well. I like it. |

Any books you guys would recommend? I was looking at the Triathlete training bible and it seemed to contain a lot of info and some plans for both distances. I used Matt Fitzgerald's Complete Triathlon Book published by Triathlete Magazine. I got it at the library. I followed the IM plan level 7, which was 2 wo/day. I completed ~75% of the workouts (time, family, basic energy levels). It's pretty swim heavy, but the bricks are really helpful! Knowing what I know now, I could have done some of the workouts much better and with more focus, but hey it's all about learning. |

![]() As far as wheels are concerned, I'm anxiously awaiting the release of the aero wheels from a startup company called Flo Cycling. They're designing new wheels based off the expired patent from Zipp's torrodial design. Supposed to be released in the next few months at a price point of $250-300 per wheel for 60 or 90 mm clinchers. I've heard good things about those planet X wheels...but I prefer not to get tubulars at this point. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() inmyelement - 2010-12-22 7:26 PM I was doing the Beginner Cycling Program here on BT but 6 days a week on a trainer was just more than I could handle. I have started doing only the Monday, Wednesday, and Sunday workouts. When I do the Sunday workout I go the upper limit of the time frame. Does this seem like a decent plan for a beginner? I like the fact that it has a short, med and long day but am open to suggestions. The program can be found here. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=1671 Yes this totally works and for someone starting out/over hte winter, its a good plan. You want to see improvements but not be beating yourself down. |
