jeffnboise - 2010-12-29 2:28 So...what's everyone doing for New Years weekend??

I'm gonna see "True Grit", and eat thai food on New Year's Eve.  Then a 10 sec. swim in a frozen lake for charity.  Polar Bear Challenges are great fun.

Great, this is my first mentor group!

Here's a quick Bio:

I'm 38, two children (age 2 and 4) married, and most of the time a stay at home mom. I was a preschool teacher for 13 years before our children came along. Now I teach a Toddler Gym class at the local YMCA 2 mornings a week and MusikGarten (music for young children birth - 4) a couple of times a month.

I've been running for what seems like forever (18 years maybe not counting junior high track), swimming for fitness for about 10 years, and cycling for probably 12 years or so. Started out riding a mountain bike, then moved to a hybrid and bought then bought a roadie 3 weeks before my first triathlon. Now I want a tribike or a better road bike. I never really competed in any of these sports besides a 5k here or there, and never followed any kind of training plan. Did not compete in any high school sports. I don't really have that killer instinct for racing but I love to train. I started racing triathlons 2 years ago and have competed in 10. Most of them sprints, 2 Oly's and 1 HIM aqua/bike.

The most important goals for me are to learn how to train, and avoid injury. I don't worry too much about times but want to do my best. I can't do my best if I don't learn how to train and avoid injury so that is where I am stuck for now. I am following the BT Winter Maintenance plan and really like it. I started updating my training log this summer and it is current.

Race goals: I don't really enjoy having to train for a race. I train because it gets me out of the house and feels good. Races make me feel like I have another thing I have to do. I am lucky enough to have 2 different race series close to my home so it's easy to find a race distance that works with the level my training is at and register at the last minute. Plus the RD's are friends of mine That said, I do have in the back of my head that I might want to attempt a HIM this summer so I realize I will have to get a little more serious. I am hoping that the plan I'm following will provide a good base for me so I can build to HIM this summer.

One more thing, I really hate racing in bad weather Guess that wasn't very short after all.......

Have you got room for one last one?   I'm a complete novice, just trying to figure out where to start and it sounds like there might be lots of help here to get me on the right track.

Sure Wendy, you are in!

I'm going to close the group now as we've got 15 (and myself) so we should have plenty of voices without it getting too hectic.

I'll post a list of everybody soon so that everyone know's who's who in the group.

Thanks again everyone!

nvalaitis - 2010-12-29 9:31 PM Well i can't get my 305 to sync with my logs. I used to be able to, but now i can't. Thoughts? Do i have to be a paying member?

Do you have the Garmin plugin? It's required for it to sync with BT. Might be worth re-downloading it. Does bt recognize the 305 at all?

I know I shouldn't but ,I feel kind of bad, because already, you have all helped me out with all of my questions and seeing as how I'm completely new I don't have much, if any at all, information to contribute to you all.  I think it's amazing that despite your families, busy lives, and everything else that you are dedicated to this sport. Of all the adults I know, none of them are physically active, let alone training for a triathlon. That's awesome! It looks like I'm the baby of the group, and have a lot of learning to do from you all.

Yes, it does recognize it, but I go into my logs, there usually is a "garmin box" to click under the swim/bike/run. I do have the Garmin plugin because it works with the BT Routes Function.

Don't worry about it Austin, we all had to start somewhere.

Heck, if this was a couple of years ago, there's no way I'd have thought I would be running, biking, or especially swimming at all. Now I don't know how I could live without it!

Hey guys thanks for letting me join in.

I'm a 42 year old with 3 boys and 1 girl. They are 15, 13 , 12 and daughter is 8. This will be my second full year of tris and I just love them. Last year I did 3 sprints, 2 Olympics and 1 half. My schedule this year will be about the same but I hope to do 2 half's because I loved that distance. Looking forward to this group as this is my first one.

Unfortunately, I have surgery for my wisdom teeth on the 3rd... Not sure how long it will take to get back into training, but when I do go back I am looking for a 16 week Oly plan. If anyone has had some in the past that they thought were helpful, please don't hesitate to let me know! I'm pretty driven, and I want to push myself with workouts.

I tried that and you also might check out http://www.myfitnesspal.com/.It seemed a little easier to use for some reason. I did 1 week of calorie counting this fall. I was kind of clueless about food tracking, measuring servings etc. I was also not trying to lose weight or anything. Just interested to see my normal daily calorie intake. So, I kind of thought it was a hassle trying to figure out the calorie count of everything I was eating.  I ended up not getting a very accurate account because I would rather not bother eating than take the time to measure, figure it all out and record LOL! It was an interesting experiment - that's for sure. Something about recording all the junk really made me not want to eat it!

I do think they are beneficial. I really learned a lot about serving size etc. Ex: I eat a lot of almonds, when I actually measured out a serving I realized I was not even close to a full serving for a snack.

I was thinking that BT was working on a nutrition tracking function? I'll see what I can find.

hello everyone!!

just a quick note- off to get ready for a 5 km New Yr's Resolution run!! ( followed by a visit to Yuk Yuk's- comedy type show for some NY celebration!!)

-Been participating in this sport for a few yrs- and Jeff- you'll be glad to know, probably qualify as senior ( er more life experiences??? ha ha!!). I'm 51- mother of 4 grown up girls- we are empty nesters. I'm a full time RN. My husband doesn't participate in tri's- but is amazingly supportive. Plans this yr is to build in this sport- to prep for a 2012 IM. Have done 3 HIM, and did my first marathon in Sept. I'm slow/ steady- want to improve my 6:45 HIM and 4:55 marathon times.

This yr- signed up for - end March 30 km run, half marathon in May, and again two HIM- with a fall marathon. Current wt is 165- goal is to get to 150. Currently having an issue with lower back pain- putting a bit of a dent in my trng- hopefully this will quickly abate!

have a great New Yr's everyone- looking forward to learning and supporting with this group!!

-Helen
