I am reading Tiathlon 101 for the second time. The last book I read before that was Uncle Tom's Cabin in college (only because I had to).

KendallF - 2005-08-24 5:11 PM Heralds of Valdemar series, by Mercedes Lackey

You're the second person to mention this series in the last week.  Do you like it?  I'm not usually a big fan of the Fantasy genre, but I really really liked the George RR Martin series (the 4th book is set to come out in Nov).

I really like them, she's got a well-realized worldview, although they are fairly light reading material, generally.  Then again, I like a lot of fantasy fiction.  I have about every one of these though, I could lend them to you if you'd like.

Have you read his pseudo-posthumous book, "The Last Salmon of Doubt"? Nice read.

Hey Caddreamer..   I know you  liked hitchhikers guide, so I think you would like a book called "good omens" By terry pratchet and Neil Gaimen.. It's a hard book to find, but it's well worth it.   I laughed out loud so hard reading it.  Same kind of humour as Hitchhikers.

Thanks for the recommendation - it's hard for me to find books with that crazy humor.

As far as HHG sequels, I've read them all.

If you want something totally hilarious, try anything by Patrick F. McManus.  He writes about hunting and fishing, outdoors type things mainly, and they are laugh out loud funny.  His cast of characters, including one individual by the name of Retch Sweeney, are priceless.

Another one who makes me laugh, juvenile fiction, Hank the Cowdog author, John R. Erickson.  He tells these stories about Hank from Hank's point of view.  "As Head of Ranch Security I had to always be on my toes..."  they are even better as books on tape, because the author reads them.

On the more English Humor side, PG Wodehouse is so worth it.  He took me a little bit to get into but man, his descriptions of golf and completely clueless people who nevertheless save the day are great.

I just started The Scapel and the Silver Bear about the first Navaho Woman Surgeon. It's interesting. She mixes a lot of Navaho medicine with her work as a Doctor and tries to humanize the patient in a time when that happens less and less.

Just finishing White Oleander and about to start Guns, Germs & Steel.

I've had a hard time getting into GG&S.

In the middle of Friedman's "The World is Flat", so far so very good. Other good ones this summer were

Lolita - Nabokov
The Bear Went Over the Mountain - Kotzwinkle
Fist, Stick, Knife, Gun - Canada
Alexander Hamilton - Chernow
A Widow for One Year - Irving

I read/have A Widow for One Year and the DVD of the movie "The Door In The Floor". The movie was very well done. Haven't read his recent release yet but it's on my list. Irving is my favorite along with Garcia Marquez.

I read Garp earlier in the year and enjoyed it so much that I started Widow immediately after. A Prayer for Owen Meany was suggested as my next Irving text by a fellow BTer.

I'll have to check out Marquez. Any suggestion for the first read?

Click Clack Moo Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin.

Oh, man, I loved that book! Read it to my god daughter, and could NOT stop laughing.

A little light reading. I can't take anything too seriously.

Well, sure, not after reading Click Clack Moo you can't . . .

I am presently reading "The Dante Club", which is terrible.  I am going to look in my library to see if I can't find something better to read before I turn in; there is always some book on the shelves that I have not read yet..

"Expecting Adam" By Martha Beck

About a Harvard professor who finds out she is expecting a Down's baby. Very powerful, spiritual, and inspiring. Not in a sappy way either. And spiritual in an other-world, all religions, kind of way. HIGHLY recommend this!

Just finished "The Sad Truth About Happiness"  Wouldn't recommend it. Chic book that failed to impress this Chic.
