My typical commuting pattern is drive to work Tuesday morning (Mondays are my day off) and take all my work clothes for the week.  Leave car at work and commute home Tues pm.  Then commute both ways Wed, Thurs and Friday morning.  Drive home Friday afternoon.  It doesn' always work out that I can commute by bike everyday, but sometimes it does.

I've never had problems rewearing shorts on the days I commute both am and pm.  But my commute in to work is only 5 1/2 miles and typically takes me about 22 minutes in the morning.  On my commute home, I often take a longer route anywhere from 10-25 miles depending on how much time I have.

Bump- Good ideas here for National Bike Month (almost over though)

Great old thread. I'm currently commuting 50 miles round trip 2-3 days a week - I can't ride back to back 50 mile days, my legs don't recover quick enough anymore (yet?). It's about 1:15-1:30 each way, or a 30-45 minute car ride.

Currently I bring my clothes in a day before (if I remember) or in a backpack that is now on it's last legs. I will be replacing it with a bike rack and bike rack bag in the next couple of days - one big enough to pack my laptop, clothes and lunch. I think I can do so in a rack top bag, and not need panniers, but we shall see.

I'm glad someone dug up this old thread.

We have a gym upstairs so it's possible to shower if need-be, and I can store my bike in my office. My bike commute isnt long enough to break out into much of a sweat, so basically I can change into long pants and my regular shoes when I get to work, so there's no worry about carrying a lot of stuff with me.

Did my first bike comute today - 25km each way. I used the road bike with bike shorts/jersey for comfort, lots of downhill to get there, almost all on bike paths. 50 mins or so. Brought clothes and shoes via car yesterday will bring them home tomorrow.

Coming home, lot harder, and a lot more traffic. 3/4 the way home I got in a confusing situation on the path that ended in me causing a head-on collision. Hurt fingers, bent front wheel but should be ok for the first race on Sunday. Guy I hit was threatening to kill me and stuff so I didn't feel to sorry for him. Still haven't entered the clipless club yet oddly enough.

So yah, can't wait to see what happens on my second run.

I just saw this thread.  I have the same problem with my pack.  I keep some towels and shower stuff at my office.  In my pack I have my laptop and whatever paperfiles I need so I can work at night (not much more than 30 sheets), shoes, shirt, pants.

The pack is so heavy it throws off my balance very badly and puts at lot of weight on my shoulders if I dare to get into aero.  I am able to look back by looking down below my arm through my armpit.  The weight doesn't come from the clothes but from the laptop.  I am not crazy about having the computer anywhere but strapped to my body and I wrap it with the clothes to help guard it in case I get hit.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to drop weight on what I have to carry.

1) can you leave your work shoes at work?

2) any way you can put a rack on your bike, even a seat-post mounted rack? That will give you some place to put some of that weight and keep it off of your back. Those "rack trunk" bags can hold quite a bit.

3) agreed the laptop is safest in your backpack, but if you get hit I would think a damaged laptop would be the least of your worries.

I've been looking at this the last few days myself. Unfortunatly, I can't find a caboose bag (rack top) that will fit my suprisingly small (Dell X1 Lightweight) laptop.

That - and my lunch - is the biggest reason for me to bring a bag at all.

I blew out my backpack the other day (1 of the straps ripped off), which is why I am looking.

I'm hesitant to carry my laptop in my rack trunk (or panniers if I had them) just because I think there might be too much shock & vibration loading for the computer. So it's laptop in the backpack for me.
