Hi,

I was out for my first ever organised run race today (12/26/2011), a 5k charity run. Was mild but windy and I did a PB of 28:14! I wasn't sure what to expect and so I started near the back and ran it at my own pace and picked my way through. It was good to run with others as I have been training alone in my running & bike. It was a a great fun race and I thoroughly enjoyed!

I might do a brick Bike & Run tomorrow as I am thoroughly focused on dropping my weight and buliding a strong foundation for my first Triathlon in 2012!

David

Wow, GREAT JOB, David!  Be very proud of your result!

I am and thank you for that much appreciated!

Just back from 7.3 mile bike (35:12 mins) followed by a 5k run (30:28 mins) straight off the bike. Legs stiff but only to be expected I suppose!

I am off until 9th January 2012 and so will be making the most of it in between family time.

How is everyone else doing?

Cheers

David

Hi All,

Was almost sick on the 24th and bonk on my bike but managed to put a nice 45 min run today.

How about you ?

Nice Job David!

Doing a whole lot of nothing these last few days.  Got sick on Christmas eve and just shaking it finally today.  Going for a run later today though when the wife gets home.

Starting to look for swimming lessons too!  Santa was nice and gave me money to learn to swim.  She doesn't want me to drown at my first race

Nice job David on that 5K and subsequent brick...I was sick most of Christmas so barely made it through my ST routine yesterday and 15 minute treadmill run, but it was a start.  Got to get moving though and develop a plan to begin in the new year.  I'm going to sign up for a HM in March so got a bit of work to do - especially considering my long distance to date is 5K.

Todd - swimming was a nightmare for me a few months ago when I first attempted tri training.  I got swim lessons for a decent rate at the local high school and they were excellent value (about $15 for 1/2 hour.)  Working my way through the Total Immersion book and DVD right now and it really has made a difference.  Don't get me wrong, noone's mistaking me for Michael Phelps but compared to 2 months ago, I think I can be ready for the sprint distances by the time the season starts - or at least real close.

Cheers All..!!

Good for you David what a way to enter the new year!  As for myself, I was a major slacker last week working all day in the cold on the farm makes me want to do nothing but Christmas was a turning point for me.  It was so good to be able to eat all that good food no guilt here.  About training:  So I actucally feel in love with training in cold weather with the appropreiate gear.  I went for a 60 minute 5.5 run which is back to my normal speed but tried one of those Gatorade primers.  Anyone have feedback about them?  Then on Sunday I went for 27 mile ride on my newly fixed bike and enjoyed it all.  Looking forward to train in the new year!

Cheers, Just hear with a glass of red wine!

I am lucky to have been swimming since I was a child but as long as you have no fear of water you will be able to conquer it! No more than running for me you just need to build the foundation, you do not need to be a M. Phelps! Be yourself and enjoy the journey practice makes perfect in all disciplines and I intend to improve the Bike and Running over the next 4 months so that I can compete with the best of them!

I am sure you all feel the same!

There is nothing like a challenge to bring the best out of you!

Todd, You swim 750m by ??/??/???? and give me a distance to run by (running is my weakness currently max of 4.42 miles in 47 mins) and I will meet it!! There is nothing like a gauntlet to get you motivated?? What do you think?

Any one else interested in setting challenges feel free! My bike is still below par in my mind, set me a challenge and I will go for it! That is what we are hear for, if you are similar to me then the fun is in the challenge, set them for each other and lets destroy those goals!

Go For It and Challenge Each Other!

Cheers

David

I'm up for a challange!  Are we gonna throw any time constraints on said challenge?  And come on, who else wants in?

Todd, No constraints, as you say swimming for you is relatively new! The challenge is for you to progress as quickly as you are comfortable with. 750m is a Sprint distance so hence my challenge to you!

I have 4.2 miles as my current max run distance. what is a challenge for the end of January, 12.4 miles by 31st January 2012 seems like a big challenge? I am up for it and will go for it! That is 8.2 miles more than my current max in the next 35 days! Who is next and what is the Goal!

I have no concept as to whether the challenge I have just set myself is achievable but you can be sure that in the interest of our group and for myself I will try my best to achieve it!

So my biggest challenge will be to follow the plan.  I have trained for two 13.1 and one 2 mile swim and with all of those races I didn't have to train 6 days a week but I did do other things.  Starting Feb it's strictly running swimming and biking and I'll probably add some yoga but to be committed to a 5 month plan that will turn into a 10 for my full Ironman is a big freakin deal for me!  I can have a hard time commiting because I want to do everything, but that's one reason I picked tris, 3 sports in 1.  I'm even going to drop one of my college courses to make this work.  I'm going to put EVERYTHING I got into it

so what's on everybody else's plate?

That's actually the best idea for the challenge.

You should all have already a training plan leading to your 2012 goals.

Let's do a challenge based on your accuracy to stick to your plan.

No risk of injuries based on over doing something due to not sticking to the plan, and everybody is equal, whether it is a plan for a sprint, for a 5k or for an Ironman

I propose that we'll start on January 2nd.

At the end of each week, everyone is giving their pourcentage based on done divided by planned.

The lowest is cut, and we'll see from there!

So, Who's in ??

Count me in...!  That also gives me a hard deadline to put together my training plan which I have been dragging on over the past few days.  I'm adding a HM for March (planning a run/walk strategy) which will be about 3 weeks before my first ever tri event.

If I don't have my plan in place by Jan 1, then I'm the first cut.....!

count this chick in!!  but cutting the lowest person might be a little harsh don't you think it's that person who needs more mentoring than the others who succeed?  Maybe the lowest person has to give a written explanation to the group why it didn't work and state ways they can do better next week.

I'm in for sticking to a plan. post your plans and log your trainning so we can check it out and see how things are going. still unsure of my plan right now.   becuase my focus there is 7 sprints and 1 oly later in the year. but i'm ahead of the sprint plans. so might be looking at the oly plans. currently building base miles for running. my cycling is decent last race avg was 22mph for 14 mile course. and swim for 750 lake swim mass start was 1245. with no swim training.

my plan has to be schedule around college on monday nights. other than that i'm open all days while there is light including weekends. plan on running 5-6 times a week and bike 2 times along with swim 1-2 times.

I know my post is all over the place. kinda just typing at it comes to my head.

Guess that means I have to find a plan to start with then.  Looks like my goals for 2012 are 2 or 3 sprints and an Oly, plus a HM in sept.  So I'm guessing a sprint plan will probably be the best way to go.

Good Luck everyone

Certainly count me in!

As I said I really want to focus on my running and will set a goal of 20k by 31st January 2012! Might be aggressive but thats what Goals are right!

As for an actual plan I did start the 20 week Sprint Plan last October as I have never done Tri before and not much exercise for a good few years now. That said I am really getting into the whole thing and feeling good so I am contemplating the 20 week Olympic (Run Focused) which will more than put me in the right place for the Sprints I am aiming for and who knows maybe an Olympic later in the Year!

I will confirm Goals and Plan for 2nd Jan!

Up For It!

As much as I relish the idea of a challenge, I will have to take a backseat and just watch the action unfold.  I got word on this past Saturday that my sensais are planning on holding the black belt test on 1/21  for my classmate Bob and me if I am ready.  It would be preferable to test with someone, so I am going to put my focus on Tae Kwon Do for the next few weeks (but probably still trying to get some s/b/r in to add to the endurance aspect of TKD training) to get my skills ready for the test so that I can test with Bob.

After that I will probably upload a training plan and try to stick to it to prepare for my Olympic distance in May.

So in a way I suppose I have my own challenge...

Like Jason said, it sounds like you have a plan and best of luck with the Belt!

I set on my running challenge today (20k by 31st January) and mixed it in with family!!!! Took the boys to the local playground with my wife in car. Then after a great time but getting rained off eventually my wife and boys headed home in the car and I ran back.... 5.25 miles  (8.5 km) but slower pace to allow for increased distance.

Think I will rest tomorrow and review the plans to finalise one for 2nd January!

Quick 45 min run tonight for me. Decided to stay inside this time due to the very low windchill today...

I don't really like running on a treadmill but you have to sometime...

Started to do a little "food detox" as well... I have enough of all the chocolates/sweets evrywhere...

Time to go back in serious mode

Rest day today but heading out tomorrow for a run and maybe bike too! I will go for a longer run on Saturday to get me closer to that 20k by end of January Goal!

I have settled on the 20 Week Olympic Run Focused plan which will take me through to mid May and should put me in a great position for my first ever Triathlon a Sprint on the 3rd June 2012 in Athy Ireland!

Happy training everyone!
