Is anyone else running for a charity?  I realized the reason I got into such a good corral (E) is because of the benefit of running for the American Cancer Society.  Shows how clueless I am....

I'm so jealous of your charity corral placement, Matt!  I'm running for the National Hospice Foundation and was kind of shocked to learn that they're not one of the official charities in Charity Village, thus no charity corral E placement.  When I asked them about it, they said that the Chicago Marathon makes them pay extra for this privilege and they want the bulk of the funds raised to reach them---hmmph.  Consequently, I'll be waaaaaay in the back of the pack.  Your bald head will be a beacon to guide me---ha!

Robin, I'm in the same boat for now... Corral L. ugh.  Yeah, I'm slow.  However, I'm supposed to be in E because I'm running for Holiday Heroes and they ARE part of Charity Village.  I emailed them the week the changes were due and Heather contacted the Marathon Director, who said they will address it.. well, I'm still Corral L, so I'm not holding on to much hope.  For a slower runner like myself, that extra 45 min (the difference plus the waiting time) makes a difference, since we are in the heat much longer later on.  Plus, nice to finish a bit earlier.  Oh well.

Worse part is I just got sick.  last think I needed for my training.  not sure if I will make it this year.  It was a little ambitious of myself I think considering the year I have had.

I'm with you in coral M!!! Cheers to us.

I developed shin splints in my left shin a about 10 days ago so am taking it easy. Already took 1 week off, probably another full week before I test it again. Just in time to taper - a 5-week taper is okay, right???

Q! FANTASTIC job at IMWI!!!  I tracked you all day on my phone, but since we've never met, I had no idea what you looked like.. and short of calling out your name repeatedly during my 4 hour shift, which, let's face it, would have gotten me more than one strange look... there was no way to find you.  You did SUCH a good job!  VERY proud of you!

Lyoshka - 2012-09-11 8:51 AM Q! Sorry for the thread hijack everyone, but this is why we should try to have a meetup (at my house!!!) after the Marathon! Lena and I have been corresponding for a long time and following each other's ups and downs and we need to meet!!! I mean this crazy woman tracked another crazy woman she's never met on her phone all day while volunteering!!!

Lena, I think you could have shouted out insults in Chinese and nobody would have noticed at that point. I completely forgot to look for you...I would have been thru there around 415-430 and again around 645-7pm. Was that the stop at the top of State Street? I got my chem lite there and the woman before me got all pissed at the volunteer who gave her one. I asked the same volunteer to put it on me and she said "thanks for cooperating." I apologized for the girl ahead of me and told the volunteer that everyone was crazy at that point. She laughed and said "I know."

This is Pain Face at mile 12 ish.

First time marathoners, you should will be in better shape than this at mile 12 next month!!!

Hope that got some of you off the fence about the meetup! PM me for my address and info, I don't want to post it here.

Regards,

Quincy

And to get back on track, what is everyone's training status? I need to figure out what and when my long run is going to be. I don't think I'm going to do a 20 miler...something a bit less...

Has anyone been supplementing run training with any cycling? I am eager to get back on the roadie and do some fun riding, nothing grueling, ahem.

cycling should be ok.  I always been told you can train for a run on the bike but you can train to bike on the run.  some people due to injury done 100% of there training on the bike.

Thread hijack continueth.... (though I doubt anyone minds? I mean, running a marathon is just on the way to the right kind of stupid it takes to do Half-Iron and Iron distances...)

Q, you look fantastic!!!! Now I really wish I made more of an effort to touch base with you before IMOO.  Oh well.. next year? hehe

We were at Run aid station 2 which was mile 2 and then I want to say mile 11ish? and then on the second loop mile 14 and maybe 24+?  It was the one where after the station, you run up a little, turned left and ran that weird little loopy thing? this probably makes absolutely no sense, but that's the best I got Cool (and i realize it ain't much).

We did not have Chem lite, we had Vaseline, Perform, water (no ice), Coke.  Ring a bell, maybe? I was handing out water and yelling everybody's name and telling them we had the best water on the course and even free refills.

Totally PM me your address! And phone number! Next event we are at together, I'm so texting you!  I'm running with my Galloway peeps, but will try to work it out to come to your partay May just have to drive separately, but don't want to miss it at all!

Q

you are eager to get back on the bike after completing an IRONMAN not even 2 days ago? Woman, you are insane!!

I'll be honest, I haven't been on the bike since Steelhead almost a month ago.  Oops.  I meant to, but somehow, didn't.  Likely excuse, eh?

Run-wise, I haven't done any hills and hardly any speedwork all season, so I don't know if I'll improve at all on my already slow time, but I did have a 20 miler, 23, 23, and a 26 (well, I made it into a 26.2 just because hehe).. so endurace-wise, I should be good.  This weekend I have a 29 miler on the plan, so I'm running Fox Valley as my last training run for Chicago

After the Rock N Roll half I realized how pathetic I was... so I snapped into training right after.  I'm in my last build week right now.  20 miler with CARA on Sunday along the lakefront.  After that taper time!

Good for you. I've come to the conclusion that Sunday was my last long run and now I'm just going to a minimal run/bike program to keep my fitness but otherwise take it easy. Probably 3-4 runs a week with 2 bikes and 1 or 2 days off.

I think I can handle that!

I'm glad DH and I have the Marathon and the Monster Dash (1/2 Mary) to look forward to after IMOO...kinda keeps us from falling apart and losing focus after so much training.

Super excited to hear back from some of you about the meetup.

I PM'ed everyone that seemed interested, so if you didn't get a PM with my info, hit me up and I'll forward it to you. I really want to make it happen for anyone who wants to meet, so don't be SHY!

Yes, this makes sense, thank you for the advice. I think Fink has a breakdown of different cross training you can do in place of running...he lists them in order from most to least effective and biking is somewhere in the middle between treadmill running and swimming.

I think I am also going to sub water running for one of my "real" weekly runs just to take the weight bearing out of the equation. I started training for IMOO this spring by running in the pool, and it really, really is a good workout. Just kind of boring.
