I am pretty satisfied this evening. I went out for a ride at 8:10 p.m. I figured I had about 30 minutes before the sun went down, and I wanted to do my regular bridge ride (10.3 miles), so I spun out to the highway and then just booked it as fast as I could -- to the bridge and back. I made it door to door (including spinning to highway and back) in 40 minutes. On the hybrid.

I will not lie. It was tough. Nearly 15.5 miles per hour. Average. Which means I was really cooking that thing out on the highway.

I was going to run this evening, too, but I think I am done. I'll move my six mile run to the morning, and I can probably still squeeze in a 4 mile run while the boys are at swimming lessons after work.

Just proud of myself tonight. As my swimming improves, the bike is my weakest link.

I'm proud of you too! Waita' get after it. Don't you worry, with your persistence and motivation you'll be seeing bike improvements in no time!

Way to go, Felicia!  Awesome work.  So easy to think 'oh well, getting late, won't be able to finish, might as well not bother', but you went out and made it happen.

Great training ride. You'll get there sooner than you think with such a committed attitude

Siiighhhhh one of my favorite (and definitely most consistant) running buddies is moving to Thailand. Ok, got it vented out. That is the only selfishness I will allow.

I am actually really excited for her! More important, I have a great reason to visit SE Asia now!

I bet your running budy is suddenly thinking that maybe they should have found somewhere a little more inaccesible.

Yup, that is how he got his name.  They told me he would never walk properly.  Fortunately, no one told him and he was incredibly agile for his whole life.

Glad you are back on the horse.  Or bike? Smile

Me to. Going to take my first ride since my triathlon this morning and really looking forward to it.

By the way, shouldn't you be in bed by now? It's 6.25am here in Blighty so i'm guessing it's snore o'clock in the States.

Hello all,

There seems to be some confusion with my log post of not doing anything more in 2012.  Someone even asked me if I was leaving the Manatees. Sorry, y'all are stuck with me as your cheerleader.  We have had awful things going on with my youngest daughter and I can't even find the energy to do anything but shower, go to work, and then sit and vegetate and worry/pray.  That is it.  That is my 100% right now.

Speaking of 100%, I read the forum posts and I would like everyone to remember that your 100%  on any given day is as much as you can give.  If you give that you are are successful!

On a totally unrelated, sort of flight-of-thoughts-type-note, I was drooling over a Cannondale Slice because I got a coupon code for $700 off.  I would have to plan on doing an Ironman to justify that purchase.  It was a fleeting thought.  This tri stuff is a sickness!!

Also, the world does not seem to want me to give up everything.  My older daughter gave me an entry into Detroit Marathon, so we could do it together.  It was her Mother's day gift to me.    I have completely mixed feeling plus I DON'T want to do anything but be a slug right now.

I too am glad you are not leaving. I have found that time off can really help clear things mentally. I'll be keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers as well. And please don't discount the Detroit Marathon with your daughter. I understand that it crosses into Canada and that sounds so cool. And running with family, well that is awesome!

Good day everyone, I hope you are doing as well as you can. I had a "choice" day yesterday on my calendar, either run or rest. I knew I had to drive to another part of the state for work and I was going to be there for a while, so I would be home late (excuses for my bad choice). So, I chose to not run, since I could do it this morning. Well, I woke up to the sound of a palatial downpour. It was what we used to call a "gully-washer". So, I called off the run for this morning and will move it to tomorrow. Today will be a bike home day, I'll see if I can get out of work early enough to put in some good mileage and get the challenge sheet updated.

On a personal note, I was in the van for a while yesterday, listening to Bruce Springsteen's greatest hits CD. The song "Badlands" was playing and I had to listen to it twice to hear the hopefulness through it. So my words for the day come from there:

"I believe in the love that you gave me,
I believe in the hope that can save me,
I believe in the faith
and I pray, that someday it may raise me,
Above these badlands "

Enjoy your day!

Tripopo - 2012-05-16 8:04 PM I also go for fuller=better route. Not sure if that's just the bike cop in me though, fuller tires are less likely to get pinch flats from going over ruts, bumps and other debris, in addition to what salty said fuller = less resistance and a faster ride.

I have not been paying attention, obviously. I knew you were an officer; and I knew you rode; but I never put the two together. When you are riding on the job, how many miles a shift do you think you typically cover/ride?

Like everything else, it depends.  Usually around 20 miles a day, more on slower days less on busy days.  Most of the time my ten hour shift equates to 2-3 hours of ATM according to my cyclocomputer, although fairly slow pace most of the time so I don't really log it/count it as anything (unless I'm really pressed for a bike workout and use our overlap between dayshift/nightshift to get a half hour or so in).  Yearly stats get around 3k+ miles but I also teach classes that we go for training rides on.

bcraht - 2012-05-16 4:43 PM Got a bike question.  Well a tire question actually.  What pressure should I be pumping them up to if the max pressure is 120psi?  I weigh 150lb.  I realize it depends somewhat on road condition, etc, but what's a good starting point?

I believe, as you said, road conditions have a lot to do with this along with personal preference (trial and error.)

Obviously the closer to that 120 the harder (and faster) ride you will have and the opposite for lower pressure.

I keep mine pretty close to the max (110ish)

Actually, it really depends on your body weight as well as the road conditions.  120 may not be the fastest for everyone. Maybe on a perfectly smooth road this would be closer to the truth but who hear has perfectly smooth, fresh pavement to ride in all the time?  In fact, a lower psi is supposed to be better for chipseal.

At any rate, I typically use 95 psi.

Here's one calculator.

And a few articles.  Basically, consider the rider's weight, consider the road surface and terrain, consider a different psi for front and rear tires.

Great job getting out there!  15.5 on a hybrid is no joke! And the good thing about cycling -- and to some extent running -- is the more you ride, the better you get.   Woo hoo!

P.S.  Sunset here is still 8:15.  Undecided
